  sorry if this isn't the right place to post this - brand new member here.. i recently caught up with an old friend who is a jw.

  she's been witnessing to me, and i've accepted all her handouts because i don't want to hurt her feelings.

  but now she's asking me for my "thoughts" about what i've read so far.

  OK she replied! Sorry for the lack of spacing/punctuation - I copied as is... she's obviously not computer literate.

  i didnt know that Harold Camping had an explanation!!interesting tho...there are afew things in the Bible that were prophesied to happen that would be ïnvisible"so to speak but would have signs to point to that could be recognised.One is concerning the coming of Jesus Christ to rule in the heavens(but not actually be ruling over the earth yet as such)..a time period was given as to when this would occur but that it would be invisible physically as in not see him,and the date ends up as 1914!!!(can send the explanation later)...also,the "sealing"of the 144000 annointed ones who will rule in the heavens with jesus for 1000years would be invisible.But,i assure you this,when he comes to judge the earth,EVERYONE,will know about it,it will not be invisible!!

  Would love to hear some suggestions for replying to this?

  Snoozy - when my friend was in high school, she started having flashbacks about being abused by her father. I asked her about this recently, and now she claims it was never her father, it was her brother. Hrmmmm

  The mindlessness of this "religion" really gets to me. "Men aren't perfect" is not an answer for anything!

  My friend actually even wrote to me, "If I'm wrong, I haven't lost anything"... What the!! I find that simply mind-blowing! So she believes she's right but hey, if she's wrong, then nevermind... Her entire life will have been a lie, but whatever. (Insert emoticon banging head against wall)

  I've had to keep the irritation I feel out of all correspondence with my friend, of course. I remain friendly, open and interested.

  They die too. The WT reasons that their parents are responsible for them, and if the parents aren't followers of Jehovah, and don't raise their kids to be JWs, then the children will die along with their parents.

  Wow, that is truly disgusting. I find it interesting that in one of the publications I was given, they say that a loving God wouldn't condemn people to an eternity in Hell..... but killing babies is AOK, apparently. Even if this were true, I wouldn't want anything to do with a God who massacres the innocent. Pffft

  Oh "Tuesday" - I just watched your video.... It's awesome! Hilarious... love the pot and the kettle. And the message is spot on.

  Ok here's what I wrote:

  "So, turns out that Harold Camping (the guy whose "judgement day" prediction I posted on Facebook) has given an explanation as to why nothing eventuated.
  He stated that May 21 had been an "invisible judgment day".
  Does the Watchtower have any claims that have 'invisible' fulfilments?"

  When I get a response, I'll post it here.

  Thanks so much Black Sheep and William Hahn, and everyone else too.

  My friend actually lives about a 3 hour drive from me, which is a good thing, so we don't have to have any in-person conversations!

  Everything is done by email so I can take my time with it.... but so can she. She knows that I'm an agnostic (ex born-again Christian)...

  Bit of history about us.... We have known each other since we were 5 years old, in school. We're now both nearly 35.... I grew up a Catholic and then my parents converted to Pentecostalism (which became wacky in its own way) and now I'm "nothing". My Dad actually used to have "discussions" with her Dad! They just threw Bible verses at each other, from what I can gather. Her Dad has since died, and now she's freaking out that he's gonna "wake up" and find that half his family aren't there...

  Just a question - what do JWs believe happens to non-JW babies and young children at Armagedddon?

  Broken Promises - thank you! Yes, that's exactly what I was seeing (advertising, not a message). Dur, I should have realized that!!

  I thought the envelope meant there was a message - problem solved :)

  Actually she did mention the whole Camping thing when I mentioned it on my Facebook. She basically quoted a scripture from Matthew and said "Fear-mongering, how silly" and in relation to JWs changing their story in 1914, she has written to me "We learn from mistakes and don't continue to teach incorrect things like others do. Increased knowledge often requires adjustments in one's thinking. Witnesses are willing humbly to make such adjustments"....

  Just wondering if anyone would be willing to help me respond to her explanations? As in, write them for me? I just don't want to ruin this opportunity - I'm not confident enough to do it myself...

  Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this - brand new member here.

  I recently caught up with an old friend who is a JW. She's been witnessing to me, and I've accepted all her handouts because I don't want to hurt her feelings. But now she's asking me for my "thoughts" about what I've read so far. Actually, I haven't read any of the things she's given me, because I already know the kind of rubbish they contain. I have however, been reading a lot of great stuff from the JW Facts website (the author of which is a member here, I believe).

  I'm not so naive as to think I can save her from the JWs (she said she and her husband have just become pioneers), but I don't want to waste this chance to maybe plant a seed, or at least make her think!

  As most of you guys are ex-JWs, I'd love to hear your opinions. How should I respond? I really don't want to get into a back-and-forth on quoting scriptures, because I don't think I'd get anywhere with that.

  I was thinking instead, about getting to the heart of the matter - everything depends on JWs being God's chosen organisation. So how do we know it is? ... The whole issue of mind control, not being allowed to research independently, etc.

  Or should I tackle one issue at a time? Like the blood transfusion thing?

  Any advice or thoughts appreciated. Thanks for reading.
