The term "cult" is certainly a loaded term. JW's are really not much more radical than your typical fundamentalist group of whatever stripe.
So, the term Cult can be difficult to quantify.
jw's not a cult or sect just christians , would be the impression you get if you asked most people.. oh yes they get anoyed when they get woken up on saturday morning , they know a bit about there stand on blood and christmas, but not much else.. hey i went to my local libary today to see what books they had on jehovahs witness.first i did a search on the computer for coc, gentile times.. e.t.c none came up.so i went to the religion section to have a look.. lots of books on mormons , christadephians , christian science oh jehovahs witnesses ,damn its the procliamers book.. then i found a book millions now living will never die not the rutherford version but writen by an ex witness in the 60's.
(i noticed a lot of critical notes hand writen in there by people who have read it i bet they never told anyone the'd read an apostate book).
it was the only book in the libary critical of the witnesses.

Funny how they have to instruct them on what to do in the event of an elder's death and not to make an announcement that "Bro. Dead has been deleted as an elder..."
good read.... .

why is human embrace of religion universal?.
e. o. wilson said something in this regard, which i thought worthy of sharing:.
the highest forms of religious practice, when examined more closely, can be seen to confer biological advantage.
Why is human embrace of religion universal?
E. O. Wilson said something in this regard, which I thought worthy of sharing:
The highest forms of religious practice, when examined more closely, can be seen to confer biological advantage. Above all they congeal identity. In the midst of the chaotic and potentially disorienting experiences each person undergoes daily, religion classifies him, provides him with unquestioned membership in a group claiming great powers, and by this means gives him a driving purpose in life compatible with his self-interest. His strength is the strength of the group, his guide the sacred covenant. The theologian and sociologist Hans J. Mol has aptly termed this key process the "sacralization of identity." The mind is predisposed - one can speculate that learning rules are physiologically programmed - to participate in a few processes of sacralization which in combination generate the institutions of organized religion.
thanks to the supportive words and encouragement of many here, i am now officially a student at arizona state university.. i just went to campus, and got a hard copy of the general catalog at the book store, and i went to the computer lab to setup my access.
just seeing the young and old, people of all sorts of ethnic backgrounds, milling around campus, all engaged in the wonder of learning, made me take pause and think about how silly the jw prohibition on college is, and how completely a learning environment can shatter the witness world view.
part of me wanted to cry, and another part of me was intrigued by the hot young college chicks...heh.. it is wonderful to be able to make choices for oneself.. any recommendations for my first course?
badwillie,
I am just a 2 minute drive from the main ASU campus, and my work situation is flexible, so attending class during the week is workable. I only plan to take one course this Spring, maybe two in the summer. Obviously, the wife and kids come first.
Carmel,
I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Maybe a writer, maybe a therapist, maybe a naturalist. I am definitely entusiastic about learning all of it though. I will be salivating over the course catalog this weekend. I am already a very successful software professional, so I don't really have the need for a lucrative profession driving me. I would have more freedom as a therapist, though, since I could live wherever people in need of therapy are (anywhere), and not necessarily near an urban center.

Any recommendations for my first course? I definitely will NOT be taking comparative religion!!!
