Sorry guys - but the brothers played chess and everyone played snakes and ladders.
Probably a locality thing.... depending on the 'tude of the elders.

there are hundreds and hundreds of permitted extra-curricular activities for jw's to enjoy.
activities that have nothing to do with religion or worship where jw's can really have a ball!.
so, for all of you people who sometimes wonder if you should perhaps go back, lets all list the permitted fun things that any witness can do in his / her spare time.. i'll get the ball rolling:.

Gossip. Share coupons. Spy. Picnics. Fly kites. Baseball. Surf apostate sites on the net. Crib, checkers, yahtzee, chess. Shoot hoops. Vollyball. Walking.
I'll think of some more.

what irritates me is when the car in front of me on the interstate leaves his turning signal on for 8 miles.
i was so irritated at this coming back from lunch today that all i could think of was, 'wouldn't it be great if i had a rocket installed in this little car so i could blow his car off the road?
' why do we get pissed at little stuff like this?
What irritates me is connected to what irritates you. I loathe it when drivers don't use their turn signals. Leaving a signal on forever or not using it can result in serious accidents.
The other thing that irritates me is the setup of the shopping center parking lots. I mean - were these people on acid? (it's not like that everywhere, I know - but here in my lil city, Sackville, it's the setup of the parking lots that lead to the accidents there)
A major irritation is thug wannabes. Everytime I see one or hear one - I have to hold back the urge to drop-kick them.

this is scary.
i hope they all survive.. http://www.cnn.com/2002/us/07/25/mine.accident/index.htmlrescuers race time to save trapped miners'we know they're alive'.

At first I couldn't even stomach the headlines on this one. Awhile ago, here in my province, we had a mine disaster - Westray Mine. It was heartbreaking.
To be stuck 2km underground nauseates me. It's being buried alive. I hope they are able to get those men out.
My fingers are crossed for these men and their families.

next month i'll be taking the plunge and purchasing my first multi-unit building.
i've done some research on the area of landlording but as they say "experience is the best teacher".
so for those of you who have rented out to others before what would you say is the worst aspect of landlording?.
Hi Leander. I've had experience being a landlord AND being a tenant. I'll try to answer some of your questions. But first I want you to decide what kind of a landlord YOU want to be. That will have a huge effect on how your own questions are answered.
Secondly - do not ever, EVER - go against safety codes. Always have fire escapes, smoke alarms etc. Check with your local Fire Dept. for the safety codes and go by them. It is not worth it to save a few dollars and then lose a few lives.
Thirdly - lease. Always have a lease. And always give rent receipts. You will have to decide if you want to be monthly, or yearly. This gives you legal clout if a tenant stiffs you.
Fourth - Always ... check references. Lots of problems can be avoided by checking up to three references on each person.
If someone doesn't pay - you take them to the tenancy board, give them legal time to get out, and stick to it. Now if you have a really nice tenant who is having a hard time (who isn' t these days), and will be a bit late with the rent, you could try allowing them a couple of grace points here. But if it continually happens - they have to leave. Bottom line is your credit is being affected.
A good idea is to use a camcorder to show what the place looked like before and after a tenant. If there is any severe damage - go to the tenancy board and you'll have this proof. Of course, there is always the damage deposit, which you should keep in a bank account and NOT touch.
People want affordability, comfort and safety. So long as things work and aren't filthy, it doesn't have to be fancy. I cannot stress how important it is to have all the safety features in place.
When someone calls to tell you such and such isn't working - get right on it. Make calls and have a repairman come, or if you can - do the repair yourself. People will not put up with being cold or having no water etc. Make a list of handymen in your area who will do jobs for a reasonable price.
Keep receipts for everything and keep them filed.
If you have trouble with a tenant - keep a journal on them with dates, statements etc. You will also find yourself being the ref between two tenants who can't get along. It is you who will have to make the calls on those ones.
If the area is surrounded by lawn - keep it trimmed. Keep the floors clean and any glass doors clean. You don't want to be a slumlord. You'd be surprised how simplicity and cleanliness will attract people to your building.
I hope this is of some help. If I can think of anything else, I'll post it.

i've been lurking around this place for a good long while now, and i've even posted now and again under another handle, but i thought i'd start afresh and 'do it right' this time by making with the formal introductions.
i was going to post this in the friends forum, but i'm a little bit shy for that (it took me many months to make it as far as junior member - that's how shy i am, lol).. anyway, my story... i was born into the wt - my mother's been a baptised jw for over 30 years now, and my dad's been what i like to call a 'camp follower' for the same length of time - although the wt nearly did for me right at the start - there were complications prior to the birth which put mine and my mother's life in danger involving the blood issue (how an org which preaches against abortion and even the 'morning after pill' can effectively sanction the death of an unborn child and its mother for want of a transfusion is an outstanding piece of doublethink that never ceases to astonish me...).
my three older sibs (all wee ones when my mother was 'assimilated') went their way and did the 'sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll' thing for varying lengths of time (they're all now 'reassimilated'), while i remained the 'good boy' *slaps self round the head* .
Welcome aboard C.F. !!! Pull up those big cushions and make yourself comfy.
I wasn't born and bred a JW. As with Viv, I became assimilated later on - at the age of 17 when I was lonely overseas.
You are very eloquent with words C.F.. I look forward to getting to know you. You get a standing ovation for overcoming your shyness to post this thread!
hugs, Mimilly
.
i don't why i'm making a post of this, just because i guess... my dog died this morning, run over by a car... she saw a bunch of kids on the other side of a busy street, slipped out of the collar and ran for it... she didn't listen to me & she was dead before i even got to her :(.
in loving memory of tequila "mockingbird" casey, c. 1994-2002, the most beautiful, loving dog ever...
Spider - this breaks my heart. I too, have lost a fuzzy loved one that way. She was a Shar-Pei named Buffiken-Star. I was shattered afterwards.
Please take the time to mourn your loss. Tequila was family to you. Don't minimize any of it.
And please keep us posted on how you're doing. You'll be in my thoughts.
hugs, Mimilly
my jw dad called me this morning and told me that he found my jw uncle dead, face-down on the floor in his home.
he's taking it hard.
i was shocked to hear him say that he wanted me to be with the family.
I am so sorry for you that your day begun like this. I hope your uncle went quickly. It's heartwarming that your dad wants you there though. Regardless of what all the others at the hall think - your dad wants you there.
As difficult as it will be to ignore those others - please take the time and just be family. He was your favorite uncle, and I'm happy for you in this respect that your dad wants you near.
Hon, it doesn't sound like anyone got a chance to say "good-bye". In my life I have always tried to find a positive in every negative. In this case, your family needs you, and all of you will get to say Good-bye together, in your hearts.
These are also times of remembering. Help your dad by bringing up good memories - funny stuff with your uncle. Ultimately - remember how precious life is, and how important each day is.
I am sorry for your loss sweety - but I am thankful that you are being involved. Please keep us posted - and vent, vent, vent.
huge hugs, Mimilly

i would have to say the worst (aka: funniest) thing i ever did at a meeting was when i sat with the circuit overseer and his wife (many moons ago......) .
anyway, he was really prim and proper and she was of course, a very submissive wife who barely spoke without her husbands permission.
anyway, he goes to the platform and starts off by asking th audience: who was ahab?
The worst thing I ever did at a meeting was pay attention. The best things I ever did were the giggle fits.
