  About Tattoos...

  somebody was asking me about tattoos and what the biblical rules about them are.

  i also remember that a magazine (an awake!?

  ) mentioned that getting a tattoo is a matter of conscience.

  fight shunning with real heartfelt love.. i think it would be cool to let as many people as possible know that their behavior has not.

  I've tried with my sister and brother on more than one occasion, even giving gifts. All it ends up doing is upsetting my ailing gran, because she sees how they treat me in return (still shunning, blaming me, not thanking me for the gifts, etc.). And it really angers my grandfather. I keep trying and keep getting ignored. Maybe someday their eyes will be opened, and they'll remember that I love them.

  Amen. We have 4 dogs, 2 of which are boxers, and I completely agree. All my babies get mummy kisses. :)

  Another story on changing magazine pics

  in my country a few years ago there was the (unwritten) rule that skirts long to the shoes were not ok for sisters.

  unfortunately in brooklyn it seems that nobody knew about this, so once, much to the embarassment of the local branch that was upholding the rule, a wt issue came up that had on one page a pic of a sister preaching who wore just that kind of skirt; and on another page a pic of a witness party with a sister sitting on a sofa whose skirt covered her shoes.

  result?

  I got in trouble for wearing a skirt down to my ankles (back when that was the fashion) in the US. I was told it was because it was extreme, and 'being extreme is the opposite of being modest.' *eyes roll out of head*

  Good cop, Bad Cop...JW elder style

  well i'm still a witness so i was out in field service yesterday with this brother.

  our conversation hit the usual stuff cars, television, movies.

  then he went on to relate how about a month ago, the two head elders (head as in, the other elders really dont matter)took him into the back room and fryed him.

  It happened to me when I was in the midst of my divorce from an abusive man. The two elders walked into our house (called there by my husband, NOT me), sat on the couch and the first one said, "So what's wrong with you?" To be fair, the other one did wince when he said that. Naturally, I got told I should be staying with my husband. Naturally, I ignored them.

  Anyone ever go on one of those bus trips to bethel?

  back in the late eighties while still in high school instead of doing something fun for spring break i got an all expense paid trip to bethel.

  on a bus no less with about 75 other jws headed to the promised land.

  somewhere i still have a photo album filled with snapshots of the printing presses and all of the "cadets" happily churning out literature -- and of course all of the female cadets happily scrubbing toilets and doing laundry.

  I went to Bethel twice, but only once on a bus trip. I took my sister, thinking it was going to be great. We were so disappointed. At the time, I was gung-ho JW. Now I look back and think how sad it was.

  How does one get marked?

  ok, i've been involved with jw's for 15 years or so, but i've not been deep enough into any "clicks" to know how someone gets "marked".

  will someone explain?

  i'm sure i must have been marked more than once for stupid reasons - only going to 2-3 of the 5 weekly meetings (hey, some of us do have to do laundry every now and then), not commenting enough (they wouldn't want to hear my comments now), not going out in service enough, etc.

  I was marked for dating someone who was studying. The part about them encouraging you is a joke. :) They try to embarrass you out of your "wrong" course by giving a local needs part about whatever you're doing "wrong." They don't come out and point the finger at you, but the fact that half the congregation turns around to look at you during the talk makes it fairly obvious. LOL!
