Interesting article.
Perhaps secularism will be the reason less people get sucked int.
Cults will survive as long as the human need to turn over ones thinking to a higher power does.
here's a link to an interesting article on the apparent demise of cults.
i can remember being accosted by various culty groups back in the '70s, while walking through the airport in lax.
this article ties the dwindling number of cults in western culture, to a shift towards secularism.

i was just watching the jw broadcasting network and the topic being discussed was forgiveness.
the fellow presenting the topic was talking a brother who had sinned many years ago.
he finally came clean with the local elders, accepted his discipline and got on with his life.
The elders manual gives the idea that the magic number is 3 years. Anything over 3 years old and an elder does not "necessarily' have to be removed from serving.
But that is only for fornicatin elders!
Publishers have no statue of limitations on their wrongdoing.

Its hard to take their judicial system seriously because the variables are endless and inconsistent.
For example, in their own manual, they state that if an elder is guilty of a sin which is judicial and it is not known for years AND the congregation still views him as an "older man" that there is no need to remove him because of an "old" sin.
So if the leadership can - why not the members?
so, 8 months after i realized ttat and 7 months removed from completely walking away from jw land, i think i'm almost ready to find out what it is i actually believe.
after all of the research i did while exiting the jws, i took a much needed break from any religious/spiritual or whatever things.
now i think i'm ready to explore, see what's out there.
There is a whole big world awaiting you to explore...
enjoy the journey!
two jehovah's witnesses congregations abolished by courts.
today, 11 february 2016, an administrative lawsuit by the prosecutor of belgorod province for finding the local religious organization of jehovah's witnesses in the city of belgorod to be extremist and liquidated was granted by decision of the belgorod provincial court.
yesterday the provincial court issued a decision on the administrative lawsuit of the provincial prosecutor for liquidation of the local religious organizations of jehovah's witnesses in the city of stary oskol.. the above quote is from one of 5 articles at link.. the fourth article, doctors in court: "jehovah's witnesses died after refusing blood transfusions", gives a synopsis of the hearing in the belgorod provincial court on feb 8.. two doctors were summoned into court as witnesses in order to learn whether religious convictions have affected the state of health of jehovist patients and whether they could be the cause of the death of patients.
Thank you Orphan. You always find such interesting world events to share.
I thought it was interesting that they call the JWs "Jehovists".
Good for Russia for taking the steps they did.
as we all know, armageddon was just around the corner in 1974. at the district conventions that year, it was announced that there would be two special meetings during the month of september; one would be for interested people (e.g., bible studies, family members, inactive, etc.
), and the other would be for baptized publishers.
these were to be held in place of the service meetings for the two weeks, iirc.
In the first link - the one for interested people. on the second page in the right hand column near the top (at the start of the second paragraph) it says if you are afraid to go out in service dont be......
"No one is going to insist you do anything in the congregation you dont want to do..."
I had to laugh and shake my head at that!
i've been thinking this for a while.
even before the arc scandal.
it seems no matter what, the org.
I happened to be attending an event held in a Catholic center. In the washroom I noticed a sign up on the wall by the light switches that said if you know of any inappropriate sexual conduct towards a child please call this hotline and a number was given.
Do you think EVER in your wildest imagination the JWs would be that forthcoming in trying in ANY way to address the child abuse problem in their ranks?
okay i'm so excited, i'm celebrating valentines day today!
i walk into work this morning (normally a sterile office filled with boring engineers like myself) to find everyone clad in decorative hearts with streamers hanging from the ceiling and heart shaped goodies in the kitchen.
had i walked in on this last year, i would've kept my head low and tried to avoid all conversation unless it was strictly about work.
