Welcome y'all from JWR - any questions?
by Simon ini just wanted to take a minute to say "hi" and welcome to the site for anyone who's come here from jwr.
i can imagine the site being shut down suddenly was shocking and unsettling for many who relied on it and sometimes you don't realize how much you do rely on something until it is gone.. hopefully you'll see some of the same familiar names appearing and be able to reconnect with people you knew via this site and continue your journey together.
i don't know what the posting policies on jwr were but know it as a moderated site so can't imagine them being hugely different to the ones here.

Why Are You Here?
by Believer ini'm wondering why believers remain members of this forum which is clearly hostile to believers.
as one member said, nonbelievers pounce on any semblance of belief like piranhas on prey.
as former jws we should have had our fill of judgmental know-it-alls, but here we are.

Hi Believer!
I came here as the walking wounded. I went through a traumatic event in my congregation involving some corruption that went higher up than I first realized. While still active I knew I had to find some balance to my thoughts that I simply was not getting in the religion itself. They created a need and couldnt fill it, so I went looking and ended up here.
If I had to categorize myself between only the two categories of believer/atheist, then I would be forced to default to believer at this point.
I say forced because I try to avoid categories and definitions like that because I find them limiting to the discovery process.
Finding out the JWs do not have the market cornered on any "truth" whatsoever was the worst moment for me. Having survived that, if I find out there is no God, that wont be near as difficult as what has already happened and I am completely open to where the road takes me.
There are some of the nicest (and wisest) posters here who are atheists. They are very kind and gentle and even if some are not as tactful as one might wish, they are fair minded if you are respectful in how you treat them.
That said, I do find it extremely difficult to carry on conversations on the topic of atheism or theism on this board. I did start to notice most of the negativity (as to conversing) is carried out by the few not the many.
Keep reading and you will be able to see for yourself who is sincere in what they believe (athteism, agnostic or anything else for that matter) and who has a "platform" or agenda they are pushing.
I dont click on their threads and when they insert themselves in to a thread I stop reading it and go elsewhere.
My reason for handling it this way is I think about the saying someone here coined "their JW is showing". My apologies to whoever said that - I cant remember.
But basically what it means to me is IF someone is dogmatic, rude or insists their way is the only possible right way, then they have a personality thing going on not a belief thing. I have no time for that - I am searching for truth and accuracy, not looking to be someones disciple!
There is a well known song with a line that says, "take what you need and leave the rest..."
That is a way to benefit from a forum without getting bruised by it if you are new and until you find your footing and your place in the community,
I hope you stick around and keep posting Believer, its really nice to have you here.

That good old JW rumour mill
by punkofnice inbecause i simply decided the watchtower corporation wasn't the truth(tm) i was da'd in a secret jc that i didn't attend.
i was writing songs with a friend that day instead.. jws wasted no time in labelling me as an evil villain.
the rumours abounded.. i was labelled as 'a false prophet'.

Ah punk...you are obviously as charismatic in their minds as you are here!
DOC is right...you are being minimized by gossip because they cant have you looking happy or succeeding. What a threat that would be!
Your colors are too bright to fade so they are throwing to old "gossip bleach" upon you!
(I must say - even the rumors they are spreading about you make you sound like someone I would love to meet!)

Differences Between Ex-JWs
by David_Jay inwe are not all the same--a real "duh, david!
so i figured if i didn't feel that sense of solidarity that seems missing among the debating, then i was part of the problem.
i'm responsible for making this place feel like a support and place of solidarity, just as much as anyone else.. but approaches i tried didn't work until i shut up for a while.

Great post David_Jay.
What I really appreciate about it was being able to look at other reasons people may have for being "ex JWs". I am on a journey to understand my own motivations and like reading about other points of view,

Tried One Last Time In The Kingdom Hall...
by pale.emperor inso last thursday was meeting day.
my wife knows my thoughts on this religion and respects my fade and is completely ok with it (which surprised me, and also made me love her even more).
i think she must know it's all crack-pot stuff but seeing as her whole family are all in and about 98% of them cant even explain their beleifs without a watchtower on hand i think she's just going along for the friends/family/social side of it.

Great post pale E,
In your post it is easy to see you are moving through the steps of coming to terms with things and you are doing so realistically with your wit and humor intact.
That is progress in a direction that will hold good things for your future.
kudos to you my friend.

Father's Day is tomorrow (in the US). Why is it wrong?
by leaving_quietly ini did an examination of the one single article ever to address father's day since it's tomorrow here in the us.
the article covers both mother's day and father's day.
hope it's informative.. examination of “mother and father worship unscriptural”, the only article ever to address father’s day in any publication printed by the watchtower bible and tract society.

I love that original post, thanks!
More and more it seems that a lot of the holidays were forbidden to JWs just to make them stand out as different from the world.
I guess there is nothing wrong with that as long as you state it clearly. To say that you want people to NOT celebrate something so they can stand out as different is at least honest.
To say that a holiday such as Fathers Day is "forbidden" in the scriptures or that it is wrong religiously with no substantive reason, is dishonest and manipulative.

Love is Greater than Hate
by Coded Logic inthis week has been a really difficult past couple of days.
waking up to the news on sunday that some jihadist jackass had slaughtered so many of my lgbt brothers and sisters left me reeling and in tears.
we're a community with common cause and a common struggle and it's immensely painful to see the loss of so many young and beautiful lives.
