how do jw's view the following scripture or how differently does it read in their version?.
1 timothy 5:8- anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.-niv.
but if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.-kjv.
In my experience they apply it this way:
- C.O.s and their wives begrudgingly leave the Circuit work to care for a parent (maybe they are secretly relieved though who knows?) because of that scripture.
- It is used by the Elder body to keep someone from being appointed if they dont want the man in the first place. If they DO want him, it is ignored.
- If you are giving ANY financial help whatsoever either locally to the congregation or to Headquarters, this scripture becomes invisible and no one mentions it at all. The Org trumps scripture. Always.

Beards are allowed over here, saw loads at the convention in London last year.
Micro management could also be subject to the whims of your local elders.
Here we had a "no jeans skirts" rule. Meaning the material the skirt was made out of could not be the same as the material blue jeans are made out of. This was strictly enforced - one pioneer sister was threatened with being taken off the Pioneer list if she did not comply.
When my husband came into the truth he was told he could no longer be a DJ (back in the early 80s) and he could no longer go and watch football matches. He was made to give up going to watch is favourite team play.
After reading your post I am thinking that the 80s were a stand out in strictness. So much has been loosened (and at the same time, tightened, so weird) now as compared to then.

Wasnt it in the 80s that they had the policy on no oral sex between a married couple?
There were even "scriptural" divorces granted to an "injured" mate when the other partner insisted.
They backed away from that policy very quickly.
Then there is the birth control policy. No IUDs and no morning after pill.
You are not supposed to use any contraception that could interfere with implantation.
During this same time period, vasectomies were a no-no if you wanted to be a Pioneer or servant.
Again, you dont here much about those either
1) they begin question .
2) they stop field service.
3) they stop going to kingdumb hall.

What if its a gradual awakening?
When you wake up from sleeping at night - when are you awake?
Is it when you are conscious of rolling over and your alarm wont go off for another 5 minutes?
Is it when you throw back the covers and sit or stand?
Is it after you take a shower? Have coffee?
My point is that I think it can sometimes be a gradual thing and something that comes at you from several angles.
was merrily walking down my local high street this morning when a lady approached me and than told me not to worry i'm not a jw, i said dont worry i used to be one and she was astounded and we went into a full blown doctrinal biblical discussion , she was representing her local baptist church, i really shot her away with my knowledge and she agreed she's never met someone like me before , she said that i would still need to repent and and accept jc as my personal saviour etc blah blah and that the devil was pleased that i'd accepted a path of atheism , i said you think the devil is directing people to atheism, i said you dont think the devil would be wanting people to be joining devil worshipping groups, occult groups, wiccan/pagan and witch covern groups?
i asked her to direct me to see a physical image of the devil and demons and to direct to to where they reside etc, i asked don't you think demons can manifest themselves in the form of humans?
she agreed, i then said where are they?
Pretty funny that she used "I am not a JW" as her disclaimer!
it is my birthday today.
given that i turn 60 today means that i graduated high school in 1975. time flies when you are having fun.. i remember the council i got about not worrying about a career because this wicked system was rapidly coming to a conclusion.
now i am 60 and most of those bastards are dead and the end is still in the future..
