In the foreign-language field that I am in (well, go to some meetings so that my family won't cut contact with me)..... often elders would ask members of the congregation to write them a prayer, because they didn't know the language..... bit weird, as hey, the person translating the scripted prayer could insert a few ideas or funny remarks..... seen people say some stupid things, such as an elder thanking people for incorrect answers, or telling them they gave a good answer, unaware that they commented on the wrong paragraph.

Pre-written prayer at assembly?
by angel.face ini was at the assembly a little while ago.
my baby was acting up during the closing prayer and for the first time i looked up on stage.. it really looked like the brother was reading the prayer.
he had his head turned to one side of the podium where his notes lay.

If one gets too deep into a religious doctrine of this form (a dream), they are detached from reality..... they start to see themselves as a saviour, especially if an elder.... as vital to the congregation to continue.... so deny crimes, for the sake of the greater good. Seen all kinds of really weird, warped reasonings, by stubborn passive-aggressive elders, who desperately needed therapy, but were far too stubborn, even violently self-centered. The narcissim; the imaginings they were some religious hero, when they were childish little dictators.

Child abuse - the emotional kind
by Mickey mouse ini had to complete some mandatory training today for my job on child protection.
one of the types of abuse described was "making a child feel responsible for the abuser's happiness/unhappiness.. then i thought of this:.

This is so screwed up
Growing up in a controlling JW family, with a father desperate to be the idea passive-aggressive elder figure the Watchtower promoted and my mother keen to be the submissive Stockholm-syndrome role-model wife...... emotional abuse indeed!! Tried to kill myself a number of times when I was a kid, and my parents couldn't understand why I was so stressed.

Err....... I can see the idea of the splinter group, and would have been keen to join about 4 years ago, but then I would have been hindered by the grip the faith held....... now, I'm rather agnostic - I think it's prone to problems when a flawed, imperfect human being sets himself up to dictate the morals of another; too much power.......

we will make the facts fit our world view.
we have the truth...this is the end of the world...but why aren't we being persecuted?

As a kid, I asked an elder, why if these ministry was so important (life-saving), we didn't just kick the doors down, like the police do and save the people. The brother felt I was being flippant, but really, for however crazy it may have seemed, I was being very logical.
I always found it very difficult to sit at assemblies and listen to the bragging by those being interviewed on the platform; partly because I knew the real them, and knew a lot of what they were saving was exagerated or just false, but also it was that I couldn't understand why they were doing it. Some did it for their parents, but some, well their parents were in the world or dead, so I've got no idea what it's about. Unless they just can't face leaving the truth; it's a big, scary change, and one that perhaps no one ever fully manages. Pehraps it is just easier to stay within the truth, quietly disgruntled, but giving an outward display of joy, to get a good reputation...... didn't Jesus say something to the scribes and Pharisees about being 'whitewashed graves'?

Don't join the JWs..... if you are in some kind of state where you can't cope without that crap, then sorry, therapy would be better. It may cost you financially, but so will being a JW and it will cost you in other ways.

I guess you have all heard about the "pioneer walk"... or should it be the "pioneer crawl"... the common joke, but based on the truth, that pioneers walk around very slowly "to get their hours in"...........
I never found it that funny...... I kept thinking, if we have to give up college/university, good jobs, nice car, houses (to live in a room), for the sake of the ministry, then it must be something so important, something to do well, give all our effort...... it bothered me that we would just waste time, looking for ways to avoid doing ministry while on the ministry....... basically, treated it like a joke, as if it wasn't important, so if it was so I would be asking myself, why do my parents and elders think I should mess about like this, like some 'school dropout' instead of getting a career?!?! That's what annoyed me about the time-wasting attitude, what made me work hard on the ministry and get 'self-righteous' with those that didn't; but deep down, it seemed all a bit pointless, just pathetic.
