Norse mythology has an event called Fimbulwinter that supposed to happen in the future. This is a time when there are 3 consecutive winters with no warming between them. Odin reports that Fenrir, the wolf, has devoured the sun and he asks the other gods on how it will be replaced. After the 3 winters are over and the sun is replaced then the gods go to war with each other. That war is called Ragnarok. Odin and Fenrir kill each other. Thor and a giant snake serpent kill each other. Loki and Heimdallr kill each other. Tyr, the god of war, kills and is killed by Garmr the Hell hound.

"The sun will be darkened, & the moon will not give its light." How do events like this affect superstitious humans?
by fulltimestudent inthe gospel of matthew's homily on the signs connected with the imagined return of christ, features an element of the sign that seems to really scare superstitious people.. matthew 24:29 reads: "immediately after the distress of those days "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light;".
in the nineteenth century such an even occurred twice in the 19th century and apparently became part of charlie russell's conviction that the end of the world was nigh, charlie, of course, was a 'man of faith' accepting the bible as true and not willing to search for alternative explanation for such events.
if charlie r. had been the sort of person that continually asks why, his life and ours may have taken a different course.. i cannot quote where in his mass of writings he cites those 19th c events (its a long time since i've bothered to be interested in his writings), but mention them he did, and saw these events as proof of the imminent return of jesus christ.. so let's look at these two 19th c.natural occurrences, and compare them to another occurrence some 1400 years ago.. the 19th c events occurred in 1814-16 and again circa, 1883. the reason for the sun and moon being darkened was volcanic activity, easy for us to appreciate, but more difficult for religiously superstitious people.. the wikipedia encyclopedia notes the 1814-16 event: quote.

Remarkable similarities between JW JC & LDS elder meeting
by Dagney inact 1 of the podcast below are experiences between young lds women and their disciplinary meetings with lds elders and the aftermath.. it reminded me of conversations we just had in tahoe last summer from several who had to go before a panel of jw elders, alone, 13-14 years old, scared out of their wits in having to confess a wrong doing.
parents are unsupportive of their children, instead force these young girls into these confessional meetings.
the scars are deep and pervasive.. so the same with the ladies in this podcast.

I would like to mention that a recently deceased Governing Body member named Guy Pierce was a former LDS. I wonder if he changed some JC policies that are now similar to the Mormons. I heard the Family worship arrangement the JW's have today was already well established with the LDS. People think Guy Pierce introduced that while he was at the top.

How many Witnesses would drink the cool aid at a "Jonestown?"
by Witness 007 inso my mum died from mild form of lukemia which can simply be treated with a blood transfusion each month.
to me this was a watchtower assisted suicide.
the liaison elder encouraged her to "stay strong" and said a prayer.

A friend of mine related an experience to me about this subject. He found out an uber JW he knows declared that if a GB member said red was blue that person would believe it.
That kind of thinking is very dangerous, Jim Jones dangerous. There are so many different sects of Christianity and modern Jews that have taken a different path with the Hebrew God. Any one thing or interpretation that comes out of these religious leaders could be false. If something doesn't seem right then you should follow your gut feeling.
There's one exception. The only person who can say red is blue is the one that has supernatural powers to back his statements. Moses and Jesus are no longer here to defend the bible's statements so it's all up to interpretation. Don't blindly follow men or women.

Had a family member try to initiate shunning but now they are settling for no religious discussion, notice how I did that....
by Bad_Wolf ini think this can help some people.
i had a family member who due to holiday issues, felt they had to start shunning me unless i returned to the religion.
and you know they think those of us who leave still believe it's the truth and we are choosing to willfully rebel against god, etc.

If a family member chooses not to talk to you ever after a DF or DA then they didn't really love you. Most JW's are cold as ice when it comes to relationships. No wonder why they're not getting anymore converts in the ministry. Come join us so we can remove the love from your heart and give it to the Organization.

The Biggest Issue Is Not Guns—It Is Mental Health!
by minimus incrazy people shoot up places and kill people.
take away guns and they will find knives, poison, bombs , etc.. seriously, there are a lot of mentally unhealthy people!
they need professional long term help..

The mental illness and angry people could all be fixed with the use of pot regularly. They'll be happy and care free once they start this prescribed treatment.
On a serious note, the former marine guy who killed those 11 people in California lived with his mother. I bet his morale was in the dumps because he had to go live with his parents again. I wonder if his so called friends made fun of him because he was still living at home. It's hard to pick up chicks at the local country western bar when they find out you live with your mom still.

So...I did a thing! I sent an email about JW stuff that got read out on a popular podcast!
by stuckinarut2 inhey all!.
so, we are all aware of the appalling wt study article from a few weeks back called "do you have the facts?".
https://www.jw.org/en/publications/magazines/watchtower-study-august-2018/do-you-have-facts/.

Thanks for getting the word out about that WT article.
Here's a few things that were funny in the Podcast.
"We need good facts, so don't read things... We can see what happens to people when they get exposed to the truth it ruins our whole business model."
I thought the scripture that says, "The truth shall set you free." meant that God's house has nothing to hide. The real truth does not need to live in a bubble.

This topic reminds me of the sayings of time traveler John Titor back in 2000-2001 on the internet. The guy claimed to be an American military time traveler from 2036. His timing predictions about a future american civil war were off but isn't a stopped clock right at least two times a day. A wild guess can be right once in a while.
Here's some details about the american civil war prediction from the wiki:
"The most immediate of Titor's predictions was of an upcoming civil war in the United States having to do with "order and rights". He described it as beginning in 2004, with civil unrest surrounding the presidential election of that year. This civil conflict that he characterized as "having a Waco type event every month that steadily gets worse "would be "pretty much at everyone's doorstep" and erupt by 2008.
As a result of the war, the United States would split into five regions based on various factors and differing military objectives. This civil war, according to Titor, would end in 2015 with a brief but intense World War III.
Titor refers to the exchange as "N Day". Washington, D.C. and Jacksonville, Florida are specifically mentioned as being hit. After the war, Omaha, Nebraska would be the new U.S. capital. Titor was vague as to the exact motivations and causes for World War III. At one point, he characterized the hostilities as being led by "border clashes and overpopulation". He also pointed to the contemporary conflict between Arabs and Israel as not a cause, but rather a milestone that precedes a World War III."

Anyone know the significance of the three days and nights Jesus is dead?
by Crazyguy inin my studies i’ve come to realize that most dying and rising gods such as inanna, jesus and others all were dead three days and nights.
the moon is dead as far as man not being able to see it in the sky three days and nights but many of these gods are not associated with the moon, osiris maybe being the only exception.
have any of you in your research come up with a plausible idea on why there all dead just threes days and three nights?.

In the NT Jesus makes it sound like he's the sun.
"I am the light of the world."
The sun must have died for 3 hours when Jesus died on the cross. The sun must have died earlier than that when it was off for 3 days on the 9th plague of Egypt.

I thought the 3 day and night death was supposed to match up with the 9th plague of Egypt.
"Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness will spread over Egypt—darkness that can be felt." So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days.""
