  Drinking at meetings / assemblies / conventions ... who's done it?

  for me .... 1).

  last district convention after having 'read up' (took some family to it).. 2).

  last 'meeting' to watch step-father-in-law finally get his and get disfellowshipped for molestation.. ...both were taking vodka shots in the bathroom.. i'm sure there's lots of good stories out there..

  I went to a DC in Germany in 1981. Many of the JW's sat in front of the stadium at picnic tables, drinking beer openly. I was in awe and wanted to have one too, but my aunt wouldn't let me. Dang. In 2001, went back to Germany, and the sisters were wearing pants out in service, in the middle of the summer. I was soooo jealous.

  Wallkill is it a Commune?

  after reading how many people live at the wallkill facility, it made me ask the above question.

  after looking up what 'commune' meant in secular sources, it seems that wallkill has all the hallmarks necessary to actually be a commune.

  meals complete with assigned seats and required attendance, dress requirements, wake up times, music and tv restrictions, work assignments, heirarchy making all decisions, no money being earned by the workers, the vow of poverty.....

  Band-From what I've been reading, communes of the 1960' & 70's weren't true to type, with free love and drugs. It seems like communes really got going in the 19th century as religious groups started places like the Amana Colonies in Iowa, Harmony Society in Pennsylvania, Oneida Community in New York and the Shakers. All having major religious influence and say over peoples lives. Many have died out. There are a few communes on going today that seem to be more of back-to-earth movement thing associated with the 1960's, than with religion.

  It would be awful to have to get up early in the morning, get dressed up and be nice to people before having morning coffee, I don't know how the Bethel people do it.

  stillin-I don't have any faith either, and never believed in a kind, loving God. As a child, my parents made us do a family bible reading weekly. I would always be outraged that God had killed all the first born babies in Egypt and all the horses were drowned when the red sea closed over the top of them. It was baffling why a woman would be considered 'unclean' when she got her period, which was forced upon her by God in the first place. If she had a baby, she was 'unclean' longer if she had a girl, this didn't seem right either, if it weren't for girls, there would be no boys. It was disturbing that an animal had to be killed to buy back a first born boy or whenever any kind of uncleanness was atoned for or for sins.

  Where did all that nasty, stinky blood get pour out to when all those animals were killed? The area around the temple must have stunk to high heaven and the flies would have been awful.

  It always disturbed me that King David had been considered so wonderful, yet he was an adulterating murderer. Why did High Priest Aaron get a pass after making a golden calf, when the guy picking up wood on the Sabbath get the death penalty. Why did so many Israelites get killed because some guy hid gold and a garment or two under his tent. Items he wasn't supposed to have. Why did Jehovah tell Moses 'Hey, someone stole some gold and hid it, go find the perpetrator... instead of letting so many get killed first?

  Faith always seemed so elusive and made no sense. How can I have faith in any kind of forgiveness if one guy gets killed over wood and the chief religious leader gets away with making a new god for the people, when he should've been killed? It always felt like there were no clear boundaries defined, which made it difficult to believe in a loving God.

  I am more at peace now, than I was when being an active JW.

  My Family's Bible Student History

  recently my cousin on my mother's mcconnell side of the family stopped by for a visit and brought several boxs of photos and memorabilia and family bibles.

  two of the bibles are very worn and contain many hand written notes from my grandfather, grandmother and uncle who were bible students and then jws.. leafing through the pages of one bible this morning i came across something i had never seen- a jw calling card, a business card size.

  it says 'one of jehovah"s witnesses' second line 'preaching the kingdom of jehovah our god' the capitals and lower case words were interesting in how they saw things after 1931.. there are photos of russell, knorr with van amberg (who stayed with my grandparents on visits to california), knorr with a fellow taller than knorr who looks like chairman mao (anyone have a guess who that might be).

  i could be wrong, but i can't help but be a bit optimistic.last night my parents and i had our "family worship night".

  i hate it, and i believe my mother does too.

  my dad only does it because he's an elder but last night even he was acting like he didnt want to do it.

  JW ex-boss is such a horrid man!

  ok, so my husband worked for this slave driver jw boss in a factory, and injured his back on the job.

  so my husband has launched a compensation claim against the jw boss's worker insurance for unsafe work practices.

  so the jw ex boss has responded to the claim with this mega statement affidavit thing.

  Julia-The ex-boss is fighting this claim because his worker compensation rates will increase if he has a successful claim against him. It can be $10,000s extra a year if the claim is a large one.

  I was discussing this hero with an uber-dub yesterday. She said to me "It doesn't matter"...as in it doesn't matter, because everything is vanity and striving after the wind, this guy isn't a JW, so it doesn't matter what he did. I turned to look at her and said "It mattered very much to these girls." I was disgusted and sickened by her fanatical fatalistic attitude.

  Charles Ramsey is a Hero, with a capital H.

  in another thread, mouthy said she was "not well" and mentioned "kicking the bucket.

  i believe she needs some encouragement and well wishes.. mouthy, you don't need to respond to this thread if you don't feel up to it.

  just consider it an exceptionally long get-well card..
