When I was 6, I got a green plastic pedal tractor. It even had a key that would turn! ( I know, pretty sweet huh?). I rode and rode and rode some more on that thing.

i'm going to weasel a bit on this and just say in opening that it is probably more than you think it is.. too many people imagine that social security is going to take care of them.

Nathan, I am referring to inflation as you guessed. If you feel you need 1 million to retire 5 years from now, That figure should be increased if that were to change to 50 years from now. Inflation is a huge factor. I think 3 million may be a bit high, but it all depends on what you plan on doing in retirement.

That depends on how long until retirement, what kind of lifestyle you are currently used to, what is your expected pension. I could throw a figure out there, but it wouldn't mean anything. I agree with you when you stated it is more than most people think it is. Way more.
another one of my second cousins killed himself today.
he was 42 and still a jw.
he called 911 and shot himself while talking to them.
I am very sorry that this happened. I would not necessarily say that it is a common thing in congregations. It is such a high stress world we live in now. Being a witness can definitely add to the stress I think, With high self expectations, impending gloom and doom. I feel bad he did not get the help he needed. From my own personal experience, I would say it was a combination of many factors. It would have helped me If I felt I had someone to talk to and help me sort out what was going on in my life. I felt alone and That was dangerous.

every day i step out into the world, bombarded with the realization that everything is as it should be--the grass is green, the sky is blue, the sea is green, and the damp breeze tickles my neck and wakens my senses.

this year i owed money to the irs.
(the result of cashing in some investments so i could put a down-payment on my first house... i owed taxes on the "income").
i mailed off the check the other day and today i looked at my bank account online.
"property taxes kill me also at over $2K a year."
That's cheap where I come from.
due to the fact that my mother and some other relatives and a handful of friends are devout jehovah's witnesses, i sometimes stifle my remarks regarding "the truth".. my mother asked me if i felt bad at all for not attending the memorial this year.
(she still holds hope i might come back).
i simply said that i did not feel bad at all.
Live and let live I say. Just say what we feel to others and then let that be the end of it. For all we know we might be wrong .
