Actually, there's a pretty good explanation of this in the Watchtower from 1974, believe it or not. For a brief while, during the "loosening up" period in the 70s, the Society actually admitted that Acts 20:20 didn't refer to going from door to door in the sense that the JWs do. Of course, later on, there was more "New Light" (TM) on the subject.

i am curious as to how many of you went on for further education and in what fields.
i will go ahead and list the ones i already know.. larc - advanced degrees in organizational psychology.
Currently five courses away from an associate's degree in Business Administration. Haven't taken courses in several years, but plan to start again in January. Once I finish that degree, I may try to enroll in a Bible college to get my bachelor's. One step at a time, though.

when i started associating in the late 1960s the jws were very sociable and had frequent fun events.
here are some examples of the kinds of events we enjoyed, why they existed, and then the reason they were taken away:.
sports: being involved in school or professional sports was frowned upon, so the brothers in the hall would arrange for sports for every other weekend.
We resorted to playing Cards or Trivial Persuit. But, we were encouraged to first sit around with maybe one ot two other families, and study the Watchtower magazine. We did this, and then we fell out of the Troof. -
Obviously you missed the crackdown on private non-family studies. Private group studies of any sort were strongly discouraged after the 1980 apostasy, though I don't know if that was ever in print or if it was just done verbally.
Can't have these brothers meeting on their own to study, too many new religions get started that way (like the one that famous apostate C.T. Russell started).

references have been made recently about joining the ymca is considered apostasty by the wts.
what action could be taken against someone (inactive jw that occasionally goes to meetings, they still give me a km each month even tho i haven't been in service for a couple of years and i do not attend the thursday nite meeting) like me?
the reason i am asking is because we joined the ymca a few months ago and have a draft taken out of our bank account for the membership dues.
This is recorded in our check book and each month we send this information to our accountant (a JW) who sees a debit for the YMCA. What do you think will happen?
Dunno, but I'd think about getting a new accountant. And if he does turn you in, I'd suggest you get a lawyer and sue his hind quarters off for breach of confidentiality.

That's odd, I had some discussions this summer with a couple of cute female Mormon missionaries (I called them "Mormonettes," but not to their face), who seemed to have no compunctions at all about entering my house with only me there. We actually had the discussions on the back deck at the picnic table, but they walked thru the house to get there, and I could just as easily have directed them to the kitchen or living room, if I had had any furniture there (my JW ex took it all).
Unfortunately, they stopped coming after I kept asking for proof that Joseph Smith was a true prophet; I was supposed to just 'pray to believe it,' and I refused to pray to believe that something was true when evidence was lacking. I did offer to pray to know whether it was true, but that didn't seem to work for them.

with their chronology in tatters, jehovah's witnesses have taken to preaching about their favorite subject: themselves.
i was taken to task when i made this suggestion in a thread not too long ago, but the october km furnishes abundant evidence in its list of available videocasette.. (as an aside, it seems that the society no longer objects to using the television as a medium to spread its message, now that technology's given it a way to make the viewer pay for tapes, rather than having to spend money on paid programming).. notice the titles: .

Then, of course there's the one on JWs and the Nazis.And, oh yes-- for a refreshing change of pace, there's ``The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived.''
I thought it rather odd while I was still a JW that all of the videos seemed to center around the organization, rather than biblical teaching (Now I say to myself about that - "DUH!!"). In addition to the above, there are "To The Ends of the Earth," about missionaries, "The New World Society in Action," a reissue of a movie shown back in the 50's with a modern introduction by Uncle Miltie...I suspect they only came out with this one because Duane Magnani was selling videos of the movie, and they wanted to reinforce the copyright..."No Blood," no doubt designed to keep the flow of martyrs coming, "The Worldwide Association of Brothers,"...can't tell you, haven't watched it yet, but from the title, I don't think it's an exposition of Ezekiel...
Then there's the three-video set on "The Bible." It starts out ok, almost like a real documentary on biblical archaeology and such, but by the third tape, it's gone completely over to how the Bible allegedly affects people's lives, you know, by turning them into mind-numbed zombies, and again, all the emphasis is shifted to the organization. The most Biblical video they have is "Noah," and that's for kids. Even it isn't propaganda-free, though. Don't forget, the ark = the organization. And besides that, the animation is really cheesy.

Someone told my mother once that Hal Lindsey had been a witness and that is where he knew all that stuff in his book "The Late Great Planet Earth". Does anyone know about this??
Rumors like this tend to circulate among JWs because they just can't believe that anyone outside their organization can read the Bible and understand it or explain it intelligently. The statement betrays some ignorance, and whoever is saying that has obviously not actually read Lindsey's books, since Lindsey's interpretation of prophecy is wildly different than the Watchtower's. If he had gotten his info from the JWs, then his teachings would be a lot different than they are.
Not that I'm all that crazy about Lindsey as a teacher; I thought he was hinting a bit too strongly back in the 70's and 80's that the Tribulation had to start by 1988, since that was 40 years from the founding of the nation of Israel. Very Watchtower-type reasoning, and I was almost ready to call him a false prophet, too.
The same sort of rumors used to circulate about Herbert W. Armstrong, with perhaps a bit more justification, since he at least admitted to having read some WT publications. And his booklet, The Wonderful World Tomorrow, which was widely circulated back in the 60's and 70's, read a lot like a Watchtower publication. But Armstrong had never actually been a JW, either. It got so bad that at one point he had to offer an article called No! I Was Never a Jehovah's Witness or a Seventh-day Adventist!
