Looking Back In Retrospect To 1975...

greetings, folks: so, it's been 40 years since 1975. and, if you were actively involved with the witnesses back then, the mindset of many was, that by early autumn of 1975, it would mark the anniversary of 6000 years of human existence.

and, the hope was then, that it would mark the start of the 1000-year of christ, from the heavenly realm.

but, looking back now, 40 years ago, in june of 1975, only 3 more months remained until early autumn.

So, looking back in retrospect, do you remember anything---ANYTHING at all---that was happening on the world scene, that you would have thought, "Yeah, this is it, the Great Tribulation will soon be here, and the start of Armageddon"? Can you recall anything at all that would have caused you to think that? I can't. I can't recall anything of great significance that would have caused me to think along those lines. How about you? I believe that 1975 was a Jubilee/Holy year beginning in December 1974 for the Roman Catholics.

I don't recall any specific world events that made me feel that this is the start of the tribulation. However I did believe that 1975 would be the beginning of the end, like the days of Noah they were eating and drinking etc. which seems life was relatively normal.

I think that looking back on an historical date is quite different from actually being there, When my parents were baptised the belief was that the tribulation had started in 1914 and there was a pause, Armageddon could start at any time. The brother who studied with my parents evidently said that one day you will turn on the radio you will realise by some news event that Armageddon has started. I think there may have been some influence of this thinking even though the belief regarding the tribulation had changed.

How do you manage to keep JW friendships after you left the organization?

it seems incredibly difficult.

those who leave the org.

(or fade) no longer have anything in common with jehovah's witnesses, nor do they want to stick around to get radiated by the fear and guilt that saturates every aspect of a witnesses' life.. i've lost all but one of my jw friends quite simply because i can no longer condone the evil things that they condone.

Is there a difference between being pardoned or acquitted

in the new world translation of the holy scriptures (revised 2013) at romans 6:7 it uses the word 'acquitted'.

in the kingdom interlinear translation of the greek scriptures (1985) it also has 'acquitted' and in the greek word for english word translation part in has 'has been justified' .

the insight on the scriptures (1988) under the heading declare righteous page 803 talking about the original greek words that are translated as justify and justification and can be translated as declared righteous and pronounce righteous it says,.

The word "acquitted" used here by the Watchtower translator[s], is interesting. As mentioned above the word is closely allied to the concept of "justification" or "declaring righteous", but most translators feel that that the analogy of slavery is pertinent. A slave owner had authority over a slave only while the latter was alive. But once that slave was dead, the owner no longer exercised any authority over him.

the children of one of yesterday's shooting have told the media that they have already forgiven the killer for what he did.. dylaan roof has not apologised for what he did.

he hates black people and probably regrets not killing even more.. what does it really mean to forgive?.

if the legal system asked the victims relatives what they want done next would they ask for dylaan to go free and unpunished?.

I think you probably do have a Christian view just a different and probably a better view than my own.

I read last night that the word in Romans 6:7 translated as justified can translated or can mean free. I don't know how they know this. Maybe they have a first century dictionary

Yes, I have a Christian view, but not necessarily a JW view.

This comment isn't meant to be argumentative. However in one of my earlier posts I quoted from Vines Complete Expository Dictionary under the words Forgive,Forgave, Forgiveness page 251 which seems maybe similar to the view of 'a required way'

'Human "forgiveness" is to be strictly analogous to divine "forgiveness," e.g., Matt. 6:12. If certain conditions are fulfilled, there is no limitation to Christ's law of "forgiveness," Matt 18:21,22. The conditions are repentance and confession, Matt.18:15-17; Luke 17:3.'

On my first post on this thread I said I wasn't sure how I view forgiveness. I had a discussion with someone a while ago regarding it and I was unable to come to a conclusion. I felt that there needs to be some sort of repentance and the first step i thought was to cease the action. if someone is punching my face in they need to stop before i can think of forgiving them. I also thought that 'God has a required way for seeking and receiving his forgiveness.' (Insight on the Scriptures 1988) and as we should imitate Christ I thought this was probably the best way to view the word forgive and so although i often may feel i do not agree with cofty i could see what he i think he was saying about the word forgive. While not judging whether the people mentioned were right or wrong as I am not sure my view is correct.

I think some here are implying that forgiveness must always include a suspension of accountability and justice.

The 'some here' i'm wondering if you are including me.

My post was in answer to how I see the word forgive/forgiveness.

In Mark 2 they said only God can forgive sins and Romans 13:4 says that governments 'are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.' (NIV)

when you were still asleep in the watchtower organization and had no idea of ttatt.

what would you have done if you were in a serious accident and all of a sudden you woke up in the emergency hospital room with all the brothers and sisters at your side and your spouse cheering you on to be faithful to jehovah.

then the doctor comes up to you and tells you that you are about to go into surgery because there is no time to lose and the only way to live is to take a blood transfusion ?
