I read last night that the word in Romans 6:7 translated as justified can translated or can mean free. I don't know how they know this. Maybe they have a first century dictionary -

"We Already Forgive Him" - What Does That Mean?
by cofty inthe children of one of yesterday's shooting have told the media that they have already forgiven the killer for what he did.. dylaan roof has not apologised for what he did.
he hates black people and probably regrets not killing even more.. what does it really mean to forgive?.
if the legal system asked the victims relatives what they want done next would they ask for dylaan to go free and unpunished?.

Yes, I have a Christian view, but not necessarily a JW view.
This comment isn't meant to be argumentative. However in one of my earlier posts I quoted from Vines Complete Expository Dictionary under the words Forgive,Forgave, Forgiveness page 251 which seems maybe similar to the view of 'a required way'
'Human "forgiveness" is to be strictly analogous to divine "forgiveness," e.g., Matt. 6:12. If certain conditions are fulfilled, there is no limitation to Christ's law of "forgiveness," Matt 18:21,22. The conditions are repentance and confession, Matt.18:15-17; Luke 17:3.'

Yes, it is a Christian view
Thank you baft.
On my first post on this thread I said I wasn't sure how I view forgiveness. I had a discussion with someone a while ago regarding it and I was unable to come to a conclusion. I felt that there needs to be some sort of repentance and the first step i thought was to cease the action. if someone is punching my face in they need to stop before i can think of forgiving them. I also thought that 'God has a required way for seeking and receiving his forgiveness.' (Insight on the Scriptures 1988) and as we should imitate Christ I thought this was probably the best way to view the word forgive and so although i often may feel i do not agree with cofty i could see what he i think he was saying about the word forgive. While not judging whether the people mentioned were right or wrong as I am not sure my view is correct.

I think some here are implying that forgiveness must always include a suspension of accountability and justice.
The 'some here' i'm wondering if you are including me.
My post was in answer to how I see the word forgive/forgiveness.
In Mark 2 they said only God can forgive sins and Romans 13:4 says that governments 'are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.' (NIV)

How strong were you in “The Truth?”
by John Aquila inwhen you were still asleep in the watchtower organization and had no idea of ttatt.
what would you have done if you were in a serious accident and all of a sudden you woke up in the emergency hospital room with all the brothers and sisters at your side and your spouse cheering you on to be faithful to jehovah.
then the doctor comes up to you and tells you that you are about to go into surgery because there is no time to lose and the only way to live is to take a blood transfusion ?

We had a couple of times where we had to make a choice regarding blood. We didn't have it. -

Thanks for your comments helps me get a clearer understanding.
When I was leaving the Witnesses I discussed this scripture with someone along with Armageddon and judgement. I looked it up in the only other bible that I had in the house The Living Bible and it says this'
Romans 6:6-8
Your old evil desires were nailed to the cross with him; that part of you that loves to sin was crushed and fatally wounded, so that your sin-loving body is no longer under sin's control, no longer needs to be a slave to sin; for when you are deadened to sin you are freed from all its allure and its power over you. And since your old sin-loving nature "died" with Christ, we know that you will share his new life.
Then I got out my Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures and found the word justified, I then felt that this was a better way of understanding it.

Charity
by aintenoughwiskey inwe know the wt interpretation of matt 25:40 is support of the anointed.
since most of us here are no longer in that situation, what, if any forms of charity are you involved in?
sorry for the awkward framing of the question, it's not meant to imply atheists, or non-christians are not charitable!

'...basically carry the idea of absolving or clearing of any charge, holding as guiltless and hence acquitting, or pronouncing and treating as righteous'
My understanding is that God forgives us on the legal basis of Christ sacrifice, we are acquitted, as if we never committed the sin. I see it different from being pardoned.
In the footnote of the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (revised 2013) Romans 6:7 it says 'Or released of pardoned'
My question is, Am I wrong in thinking there is a difference between being acquitted and pardoned and as the Greek uses the word translated justified or in the English use of the words do they mean the same?

So if the court asked the relatives of the murder victims what should be done they would say let him go free would they?
Probably not but I don't know.
