If you were told today you would die next week, would you be happy and fine with that?
by EndofMysteries ini don't know how so many who seem to be certain this life is it after being jw's seem to happily accept it and be fine with it.
i am living and trying to live as if this is it.
i want there to be a future life/afterlife, something, but i see how fast life comes and goes and even if i'm living it to the fullest, there is no peace for me with the thought this may be it.

Looking Back In Retrospect To 1975...
by titch ingreetings, folks: so, it's been 40 years since 1975. and, if you were actively involved with the witnesses back then, the mindset of many was, that by early autumn of 1975, it would mark the anniversary of 6000 years of human existence.
and, the hope was then, that it would mark the start of the 1000-year of christ, from the heavenly realm.
but, looking back now, 40 years ago, in june of 1975, only 3 more months remained until early autumn.

thanks Fisherman,
I found it interesting in the book regarding The Divine Plan of the Ages published by C.T.Russell in 1886. Ephesians 3:11 reading 'according to a plan of the ages' in the Emphatic Diaglott, and in the New World Translation it is eternal purpose like in the book title.
In the book God's Kingdom of a Thousand Years Has Approached (9173) pages 206/207 it explains how Russell calculated the 6000 years of man's existence on earth to end in 1872 and by allowing two years between the creation sinning they arrived at 1874 for the end of six thousand years
'This resulted in their calculating six thousand years of sin as ending in 1874 C.E in the autumn, the seventh millennium began, for the instigator of sin, Satan the Devil , to be bound and cast into the bottomless pit and for Christ to start reigning for the foretold thousand year period.'
On page 209 it says in 1943 they did away with 100 years due to finding something in Judges that altered the chronology and 'This moved forward the end of six thousand years of man's existence into the decade of the 1970's.' This also did away with 1874 as the date of the return of Christ.
So this 6000 years and the devil being cast in the bottomless pit seems to go back a long way.

Fisherman,
I read it. It does not say that. It says that the first half was now closing, 3500 years after the creation of Adam and Eve. 3500 + 3500 = 7000 years. So the other half: 526-3500= 2974 CE - 1000 = 1974
Maybe this helps
In the August 15 1968 Watchtower in the Article Why are you looking forward to 1975?
page 499
Well, for one thing, if 4026 is added to 1968 (allowing for the lack of a zero year between C.E. and B.C.E ) one gets a total of 5,993 years, come this autumn from Adam's creation. That means that, in the fall of the year 1975, a little over seven years from now..., it will be 6,000 years since the creation of Adam, -

The WT no longer teach that each creative day is 7000 years long.
I don't think they would dismiss the calculations that lead back to Adam in 4026 and in still teaching 1914 and the nearness of the end and then the thousand year reign surely this would make the 7th creative day about 7000 years long so there is one at least.

The creation of Eve was the unknown variable when discussing 1975 " as the end of the 6000 years.." Nevertheless, a lot of people hoped that 1975 would be "the end," and the farther away from Kings County, the more people believed in their minds that 1975 would be "the end"
I don't understand what you mean by the further away from Kings County, the more people believed in their minds that 1975 would be "the end"?
In the book Gods Eternal Purpose Now Triumphing for Man's Good. (1974) page 131/132'The first half or evening period of Gods seventh creative day was now closing, 3500 years from the creation of Adam and Eve, The morning of this creative day was due to begin at 526 BCE.'
page 186
'..hurling them into the abyss and sealing them up there, bound as with chains for the next thousand.Revelations 20;1-3 pictures this, not as a part of the war at Har- Magedon, but as a follow up of that war.'
This was the newest light and I would understand that from the first quote you can understand that the 7th creative day ended 3500 years after 526 BCE and the second quote shows that Har-mageddon would not be part of the thousand years that Satan was abyssed and since Satan to my knowledge had not been abyssed by 1974 it left little time for Har-mageddon.
I don't see what this has to do with being near or far from Kings county maybe i am missing understanding something?

when 1975 had past and although I believed the tribulation would start by then and had made adjustments in my life in line with the belief it never really mattered to me because now in retrospect I think the belief in the tribulation before the generation passed away teaching was stronger and i think that was due to faith in the good news that we preached regarding the establishment of God's kingdom in 1914 and the further fulfilment of Isaiah 11;10 which was evidence strengthening my faith and years later the same verse was central to my leaving the witnesses -

So, looking back in retrospect, do you remember anything---ANYTHING at all---that was happening on the world scene, that you would have thought, "Yeah, this is it, the Great Tribulation will soon be here, and the start of Armageddon"? Can you recall anything at all that would have caused you to think that? I can't. I can't recall anything of great significance that would have caused me to think along those lines. How about you? Let me know. Best regards, everyone!
I believe that 1975 was a Jubilee/Holy year beginning in December 1974 for the Roman Catholics.
I don't recall any specific world events that made me feel that this is the start of the tribulation. However I did believe that 1975 would be the beginning of the end, like the days of Noah they were eating and drinking etc. which seems life was relatively normal.
I think that looking back on an historical date is quite different from actually being there, When my parents were baptised the belief was that the tribulation had started in 1914 and there was a pause, Armageddon could start at any time. The brother who studied with my parents evidently said that one day you will turn on the radio you will realise by some news event that Armageddon has started. I think there may have been some influence of this thinking even though the belief regarding the tribulation had changed.
