Why education is a killer for doomsday cults.
by Half banana inif you were to read the watchtower literature and you believed it to be the exclusive divinely inspired interpretation of the bible, i suggest that you would not be learning anything useful, instead you would simply be absorbing the indoctrination of the jw org..
what is the difference between indoctrination and education?.
take any passage from the watchtower this sentence for example which assumes significance in the end of six thousand years of human history in 1975: “how then does this fit in with god’s timetable?”.

Another generation....
by joey jojo init has been 21 years since the 1995 article that pretty much buried the idea of the '1914 generation'.. remember those guys?
the ones born in 1914 that would still be alive when the end of the system arrived.. i'm glad i'm old enough to remember going from door to door, preaching this belief.
the reason i say that is because i have a lot of 'still in' jw friends and family.

The two paths of exJWs
by Simon init's easy to think of exjws as being a single amorphous group but the more i think about it, the more i believe that there are two distinct sub-groups and wonder if you agree.. there are those who believe and those who don't.
i know that seems obvious but let's break it down a bit more.
there are those who don't and never believed and some who are looking for a religion to match their beliefs.. i used to think this split would be between born-ins and converts but of course it's possible for born-ins to be believers although i suspect that many, like with other faiths, do so simply because they have never experienced anything else or made a conscious choice.

'If I had gotten together with my teen 'crush', who knows?' (talesin)
A friend said to me a few years ago that if we had married she would not have let me leave the Witnesses. I have to wonder if she would have been right.
I also feel that my wife would not have left if I hadn't.
When I left the witnesses the situation in my life was probably the best it would ever have been for leaving and the one thing that would make me leave came up.

the way i understand it is that in Romans 6:7 the original verb dikaioo is used.
In the Insight on the Scriptures under the heading, Declare Righteous it says that this word 'in the Christian Greek Scriptures, where the fullest explanation of the matter is found, basically carry the idea of absolving or clearing of any charge, holding as guiltless, and hence acquitting, or pronouncing and treating as righteous.'
The following paragraph talks about the verb and ends with, 'The apostle Paul states that the person who dies is "acquitted [form of dikaioo] from his sin," having paid the penalty of death-Rom 6:7,23.'

Fisherman in Romans 6:7 I believe the word justified is used and that's how the clean slate idea comes about. If its not a clean slate wouldn't that alter the view of the other scriptures where the word is used? -

The converts though bought into the WTS religion most frequently because it was serving the niche market they were looking in
When my parents became JW I don't think they were looking for anything. My father was very involved in politics and he said only met with them when they had called on my mother so he could show them that they were wrong. He failed. Years later at an assembly he met another chap he knew who shared his political views.
In some ways I think it was good for them but it's difficult to know for sure.
I find theology more interesting since I left the JW, I was a good Christian I think but probably not a good JW. I couldn't not believe.
