Watching the Rio Olympics? What's your sporting interest?

i haven`t seen much if anything on the rio olympic games on this forum , i can`t believe their is so little interest in such a sporting event that is televised world wide.. i don`t get to watch everything , but events i do like to see when i can are,track and field ,gymnastics ,swimming , diving ,and their are a few other sports i will watch when they are on , especially if an australian is involved.. how about you ?

whats your favourite sport to watch ?.

has the "drug" issue affected your view of the games ?

my wife watches it. Only sport I like watching American football and baseball.

Convention

gorby is as you know a long time fader.. visited the convention this weekend.. and concluded that samuel herds talk about hope was not so bad at all, it was well balanced.

made some good points.. knowing both sides of the medallion, have to admit he was humble with a focus on hope.. the saturday drama impressed me.

of course, there is a lot to say about the organization, this professional produced movie in a "true story" scenario, gave me the insight that hope is important for suffering people.

the man who studied the bible with my father and gave him this hope said it was in impossible for him to grow old and die in this system.

Paranormal Warning

i've heard some weird stories coming from jws about the paranormal.

i know about the warnings about items that come from unbelievers -- those don't interest me as much.

what i am interested in are actual experiences in stories of the paranormal you've heard or experienced yourself.

It's less fun if a "Mr. Stiffy" moves in unexpectedly and uninvited to your house and stays for months.

My father had hope, I think he had faith that the end would come in his lifetime as he was told by those giving out hope. This hope went when he died as an old man. In the weeks leading up to his death he didn't have this hope to comfort him. It was a false hope and of course there were the requirements to get this hope.

Thankfully not many publishers remind " me" of Troy.

i took my son to the watford football club family day,-and the highlight- troy deeney.

he stayed until every last item was signed and every selfie was taken.

we left way after the end of the event and he left after us.

I wouldn't describe myself as zealous or lazy. I pioneered I thought that's what was expected. I didn't feel I had to like it. I met the requirements. As a publisher I was regular. As a kid in high school I went out in field service after school. I witnessed at school and my work place and a few came to the hall but not many.

For those born into the religion, do you think the Society's emphasis on the paranormal or on demons affect your religious beliefs when you were young or tended to assist the Society in exerting control on your beliefs? Do you think it made you more fearful as a child or as an adult?

Maybe to a degree but I never gave it a lot of thought. As a preschool child my mother would take me to her bible study with someone who had problems with the paranormal and I recieved toys from them. My mother nearly died at the time as she became very ill. I didn't have any problems due to the toys myself. It didn't leave me with any fear.

It was some years later a different series of events that left we with a certain fear but I wouldn't say that it was the Society. I think that maybe my view of some religious people that I met in the field service was influenced by the Societies teachings as to whether I accepted anything from them or even listened to them.

Young JW's attitudes

i met an old friend last evening, a great guy, an xjw for longer than me.. during a conversation about our experiences since fading (neither of us are da'd or anything) we got to talking about the young jw's.. his wife is still in, and he has two lovely daughters who he is trying to teach the art of critical thinking so that they can make the right choice in the future.. what worries him though is that he is convinced almost all young jw's do not give a "proverbial" if it is the truth or not, they simply wish to remain in it because of the social aspects, loads of friends and activities that they feel safe partaking in etc etc.. so how do you convince these young people that they would have a better life if they left ?.

they see it as losing all their friends, and being alone and trying to build new relationships, which is mostly true.. how do we convince them to make the leap ?.

What worries him though is that he is convinced almost all young JW's do not give a "proverbial" if it is the Truth or not, they simply wish to remain in it because of the social aspects, loads of friends and activities that they feel safe partaking in etc etc.

My wife and I have made similar comments to each other but not particularly regarding the young just younger than us.

Although i had disagreements with my parents they raised us to be in the truth because it was the truth and nothing to do with friendships or how much fun we could have and i agreed with that. In all honesty I found very little enjoyment with associating with the congregation.

How do we convince them to make the Leap ?

Should they ?

I don't really feel that it is anything to do with me how they view their dedication and I wouldn't try to convince them of anything. I would only explain my views if they question me.

I have watched some movies like The Conjuring and others some good some not so good. I don't find that they scare me in any way. I did find some thing on youtube that did and also a recording played on the radio. Seemed to reach a different part of me.

good morning i hope everyone is having a wonderful day.

there has been a lot of talk about the "new light" concerning the generation teaching.

it's been a major part of the prophecy concerning the last days and of course since jws are the only ones able to decipher and understand prophecy it is of great importance to get this main prophecy right.

I think these quotes from the 1960's are interesting with regard to the belief at the time and our faith.

Watchtower September 1st 1969 page 532.

'Jehovah has made many promises of things yet to occur, One may hope that such things will come to pass, but such expression may only be a whimsical wish, not real faith. Faith is more than just an expectation. It is expectation that is assured to such a degree that it is able to support , uphold and guarantee that what is hoped for will become a reality. This is the meaning of hypostasis, a word common in ancient papyrus business documents in reference to guarantees placed on the transactions.
...Substantially the words [hy.po’sta.sis and e’leg.khos] mean that faith gives to things future, which as yet are only hoped for, all the reality of actual present existence,; and irresistibly convinces us of the reality of things unseen and brings us into their presence.” The Expositor’s Greek Testament, Vol.IV page 352.
