Shawn,
Rather than being so concerned with WT doctrine and how to 'refute' it, I would recommend that you study up on the topic of 'cult mind-control'. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, Steven Hassan has written two excellent books on the subject: Combatting Cult Mind Control and Releasing The Bonds.
JW's are re-programmed whenever they attend the KH or read their WT material. The biggest hurdle to overcome is that they equate Jehovah with the 'Organization' [The WT Society]. If one leaves the WT Society, then one has 'left Jehovah'. 'The Truth' is what the WTS says and all else is 'of Satan'. They even regard what is written in the WT Publications on a higher level then they do the Bible. However, very few, if any, would admit that this is the csse when asked. This is called 'doulble think'/'double speak'.
Another good book that will help you to understand the mind-set of the JW is, "The Orwellian World of Jehovah's Witnesses" by Heather and Gary Botting (C/R 1984, University of Toronto Press - ISBN 0-8020-2537-4[bound] or 0-8020-6545-7 [paperback]. But unfortunatly it is out of print. You might try getting the book through the 'inter-library loan' (ILL) system using your own local library.

I'm sorry to inform you that dirtclod.com is indeed off line for now. It seems that the almighty WT Society shut our friend dirtclod down because they did not like all of their 'dirt' splaterd all over the internet for the 'sheep' to read.
Maybe those on the board who know dirtclod could give Shawn a pm regarding this situation and thus help out our new friend.

"I am sad to see that the link for scanned WT lit. is not good anymore. If anyone knows of another I would like to know about it." -- Shawn
Shawn,
Can you re-locate the non-working url link that you are referring to in the above quote and post it in this thread? It would help in trying to find out where the site went.
In the meantime, this link page does have several scanned pages from WT lit.

"Many of us have examined the world and it's history outside of the christian take on the myth and do not believe in Jahoba or even Christ for that matter." - - Dave
Dave,
Yes, Dave, I realize that is how a lot of ex-JW's end their journey 'OUT'. But to get to this point, they usually start their search believing in Jehovah, but may end their search in unbelief. That is what I was trying to say to Shawn.

Shawn,
Another thing that you are most likey unaware of is that JW's and most ex-JW's do NOT hold 'Born-Agains' aka BA's in very high esteem.
A current JW will dismiss what you have to say regarding 'the salvation issue' as coming from 'Babalyon the Great' aka FALSE RELIGION.
An ex-JW will dimiss what you have to say regarding 'the salvation issue' and view it as 'jumping from the frying pan into the fire'. Most ex-JW's want nothing more to do with 'organized religion'. They will however seek to find their own way to get closer to Jehovah.
Also in this same line of thinking - most JW's and ex-Jw's will still reject any notion of 'The Trinity'. You are best to leave that subject alone.

Hi Shawn and welcome to JWD!
As a non-JW Christian, I think I know where you are coming from.
My first piece of advice to you is to start at the beginning of the JWD archives and read, Read, and do more READING. This excerise will allow you to be able to 'think like a JW' without actually being one.
When you have read something in the archives that you want to discuss further here, post a new topic with your questions and join in the discussion with current members of the board.
When you have finished reading the archives you will have a lot of your current questions answered for you.

by cyborgVision ini mean seriously, most of us have been inside for a number of years.
so during all this time did you ever see happy person or a family or were you ever truly happy there, even for a brief period of time?
if you were happy, when was it?

Hi sad and lonely,
I've never been a JW, but I did study with them for a while. I attended the Kingdom Hall a few times, but was not really that impressed with the way I was treated. I was mostly ignored. You see, I don't make friends very easily, so that could have been my fault. But never the less, I thought that the way people just got up and walked about during the services was not very considerate to the speaker. In the other churches that I have attended, that does not happen. Sure, you are always going to find the ONE or TWO who just have to make that emergency pit-stop, but it is hardly noticable. But at the KH it seemed like almost eveyone there got up at least once and just walked around! Can you explain why the difference between the non-JW service and the JW service?

My Stupid JW Mother and her Circular/Warped Reasoning

Hi Wild Thing,
Why not set up a disscussion board of your own at:
http://www.boards2go.com/
It is free and you could 'invite' via pm's those posters from here that you would like 'talking' to your niece. All you have to do to keep your priviacy is to regester using different screen name than you use on JWD. All you invite to join will understand that they are not to post any links back to JWD.
I have signed up for two forums and so far they have remained 'private'. I use them to post news articles and such from the internet and so far I am still the only one who posts there. Therefore I doubt that any 'strangers' will wander in and mess things up for you.
That would give your niece an outlet to 'vent' without you feeling guilty about leading her away form the JW's. Just tell your niece that you have set up a forum and invited some of your 'friends from the internet' to post there.
