This is interesting.
Think about the significance attached to 1914 - in many, many of its publications the Society has pushed the idea that 1914 was a turning point in human history an event that marked the transition from a general era of peace into a general era of violence.
Reasonable so far.
However, a watershed date such as 1914 only really holds significance to the general population for as long as it is in living memory!
What real significance do dates like 1066 have anymore?I think Ray Franz was making the point that as time slips by and 1914 fades ever more distant into the background the less import it will have.
2014 will be a time when a lot of older JW's will be asking lot's of questions. And consider - which date do most people now view as marking the end of one era and the beginning of a new one, August 16th 1914 or September 11th 2001?

10/1 WT: Creative days = 7,000 years
by Seeker inthe fourth paragraph on page 30 in the october 1, 2001 wt says this:.
"getting back to paul's statement in hebrews, we note that he pointed out that "there remains a sabbath resting for the peoples of god," and he urged his fellow christians to do their utmost "to enter into that rest.
" this shows that when paul wrote those words, "the seventh day" of god's rest, which had started some 4,000 years earlier, was still in progress.

About three years ago I listened to the Public Talk 'The Flood of Noah's Day has meaning for you!'
Going a bit astray from his outline, the speaker stated that while many evolutionists claim the dinosaurs died out millions of years ago we of course knew that - and I quote - "they died out in the flood."
I'm not kidding, I had to pinch my leg real hard to stop myself from belly-laughing!
I approached him after the meeting and told him 'how much I'd enjoyed his talk [!] and which references did he use re the dinosaurs dying in the flood'?
He said that he couldn't remember but that he knew he'd read it in the Society's literature somewhere.Well I didn't want to argue with him and a queue was developing for the ritual 'public speaker back slapping' so I let him go.
But this bugged me.
We all know the Society has never claimed that T Rex and his buddies were wiped out in the flood and yet this has developed into quite common currency among the JW masses.A few weeks after the talk I was having a pint [Caffrey's] down the pub with my brother-in-law elder and related this whole experience to him.
His response?
"But the dinosaurs DID die out in the flood"
I give up[8>]

DO-NOT-CALL Campaign: US Legal Basis
by MadApostate infor those who are interested in "actually doing something" in the fight against the wts, other than posting to dbs, here is a recent us court opinion which does a good job of explaining that us homeowners have the legal right to forbid solicitors (including jws) from entering their private property, including explaining all the constitutional and legal issues.
although this case deals with an newspaper/advertising distributor, jws and "freedom of religion" are also addressed by this lengthy opinion.
it is well worth the read for anyone interested in fighting the wts using this avenue.. ... http://www.cmcnyls.edu/public/uscases/tillman.htm.

I am currently working on www.do-not-call.org
I have taken it off-line while it is in it's final stages of preparation. It should be ready for launch within a few weeks!
In the meantime, if any of you would like to assist in its development please apply to join the workgroup at . http://communities.msn.co.uk/donotcall
The DNC site will offer the public the opportunity to legally and effectively remove their names and addresses from the 'territory' of the local JW congregation. Notice is also sent to Watchtower headquaters in Brooklyn.
This service is free.
There will also be a 'paid option' for individuals who'd like the DNC to act on their behalf - a small fee of about $9 will apply.
The site also provides the facility to fax/email your concerns about the Watchtower organisation directly to your US congressman, UK Member of Parliament or the United Nations!
One note, the work mentioned earlier in this thread of canvassing your local territory to produce large do-not-call lists for local congregations can be organised through the new site with one important advantage - you will earn a small commission for each address added to DNC's lists.
No unpaid volunteer work here!
Please extend me a little patience, I'll get the site finished as quickly as possible.
I'm also offering free do-not-call email address right now. If you'd like one just ask (e.g. anything@do-not-call.org)

To no one's surprise, Secretary of State Colin Powell yesterday named Osama Bin Laden as a prime suspect in Tuesday's attacks.
Bin Laden's brutal record is well known.
The 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 1993 killing of American soldiers in Somalia, mid-'90s bombings of U.S. facilities in Saudi Arabia, and the 2000 attack on the USS Cole.
Authorities have prevented Bin Laden associates from launching attacks during the millennium celebrations, bombing a dozen trans-Pacific flights in 1995, and assassinating the pope and President Clinton in the Philippines. This is what Bin Laden does. But why does he do it? What does he want?
Bin Laden is the most notorious advocate of a potent strain of militant Islam that has been gaining popularity in the Muslim world for 30 years. It is simultaneously theological and cultural. Its fundamental tenet is that the Muslim world is being poisoned and desecrated by infidels.
These infidels include both outsiders such as the United States and Israel, and governments of Muslim states—such as Egypt and Jordan—that have committed apostasy. The infidels must be driven out of the Muslim world by a jihad, and strict Islamic rule must be established everywhere that Muslims live. These extreme "Islamists," as Bin Laden biographer Yossef Bodansky dubs them, hope to re-establish the Caliphate, the golden age of Muslim domination that followed the death of Muhammad.
They regard the Taliban's Afghanistan as a model for such Islamic rule.
This Islamist militancy has ancient roots—Saladin's expulsion of the crusaders in the 12th century is one starting point—but it was galvanized in the 1970s by several events. The growing influence of secular Western capitalism in the Muslim world, the military triumphs of Israel, and the Russian invasion of Afghanistan horrified Islamic traditionalists. The Afghanistan invasion was the culminating moment: It persuaded Bin Laden and thousands of others of the need for an Islamic holy war. Their fervor has only increased since, fueled by the Palestinian intifada, the Gulf War, the American operation in Somalia, and other conflicts of Islam with the West.
That is Bin Laden's general philosophy. What is his particular grievance against the United States? According to CNN's Peter Bergen, Bin Laden is most enraged by the American military presence in Saudi Arabia.
Bin Laden was incensed when the Saudis invited U.S. troops to their defense after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Bin Laden—like many Muslims—considers the continued presence of these armed infidels in Saudi Arabia the greatest possible desecration of the holy land. That is why he sponsored bombings of the American military facilities in Saudi Arabia, why he has tried to destabilize the Saudi government, and why the embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed on Aug. 7, 1998—eight years to the day after the first American troops were dispatched to Saudi Arabia.Bin Laden is also furious about American support for Israel. He detests Jews and views the United States as the Jewish lackey. ("[Jews] believe that all humans are created for their use, and they found that the Americans are the best-created beings for that use," Bin Laden has said.) His supporters seem particularly exorcised by Israel's reaction to the current intifada, Bergen says. Bin Laden also can't tolerate American alliances with moderate Arab governments in Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.
Mainstream Muslims denounce Bin Laden's bloody-mindedness—in 1998 he issued a fatwa calling for attacks on all Americans—but he has found plenty of firebrand clerics to offer Quranic backing for his belief that terrorism is glorious. These mullahs insist that all methods of war, including terrorism, are justified in the battle against the infidels. (Bin Laden, holding up a Quran, puts it this way: "You cannot defeat the heretic with this book alone. You have to show them the fist.")
Bin Laden has strategic reasons to believe in terrorism, too. The Muslim victory over the Soviet Union in Afghanistan showed him that superpowers are not so superpowerful. And the ignominious American withdrawal from Somalia—following a Bin Laden connected attack—convinced him that the United States is morally weak. The U.S. soldier is "a paper tiger" who crumples after "a few blows."
It is a mistake to assume that killing Bin Laden means killing his movement. It's true that Bin Laden is an iconic leader who inspires his followers and millions of sympathizers in the Muslim world. But eliminating Bin Laden would do nothing to decrease the intensity of the other militant Islamists. The Afghan war created a cadre of warriors and belligerent clerics who are constantly recruiting. Bin Laden has a core of highly trained aides ready to continue his work. His trainees are scattered in two dozen countries. It is hard to imagine how the United States could neutralize all of them. And attacks on Bin Laden have only increased his popularity:
Killing him would likely rally many more Muslims to his cause.
Is there anything we can do to persuade Bin Laden to stop? The terror groups Americans are familiar with — Palestinian bombers and hijackers, IRA hard men — have desires we understand. They perform acts of terror in order to gain sympathy or sow fear. That sympathy or fear is a means to their end: political recognition, a state, compensation. They seek to participate in our world.
But Bin Laden and his followers are alarming because they don't want anything from us. They don't want our sympathy. They want no material thing we can offer them. They don't want to participate in the community of nations. (They don't really believe in the nation-state.) They are motivated by religion, not politics. They answer to no one but their god, so they certainly won't answer to us.

Here we go!
FBI agents were investigating evidence that suspected sympathisers of Osama Bin Laden were operating in Broward County and Daytona Beach in the state of Florida.
CNN television is reporting that several people are already being held for questioning in Boston and Florida. The FBI is requesting information about two cars, a two-door red Pontiac and a four-door tan Oldsmobile, suspected to be linked to the attacks.
It is dealing with 700 leads from the public and has set up a website containing a form people can use to report any new information on the attacks.
Republican Senator Orrin Hatch told The Associated Press that the name of a suspected supporter was found on the passenger list of one of the aircraft.
Also, a report in the Boston Herald said that authorities in Massachusetts had identified at least five Arab men as suspects in the attacks launched from Logan International Airport.
Officers are said to have seized a car laden with Arabic-language flight training manuals from the central parking garage.
Two of the men, whose passports were traced to the United Arab Emirates, were brothers, one of whom was a trained pilot, an unnamed source told the Herald.
The Boston Globe said that the luggage of one of the men, who arrived in Boston on another flight, had been found after it missed his connection.
It contained a Koran, an instructional video on flying commercial airliners and a fuel consumption calculator.
There were also reports that the hijackers were able to do what they did by smuggling shaving kits containing knife-like weapons aboard the planes.
"Everything is pointing in the direction of Osama Bin Laden", Senator Orrin Hatch said.
He added that US intelligence had intercepted conversations between Bin Laden supporters discussing Tuesday's attacks and acknowledging that targets had been hit.
However Afghanistan's ruling Taleban - on whose territory Mr Bin Laden lives - rejected the idea that he could have been involved.
BBC world affairs editor John Simpson said Mr Bin Laden undoubtedly had the capabilities to have carried out the attack.
He said Mr Bin Laden had 2,000 men in training camps in Afghanistan, most of them Arabs from countries like Algeria and Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Mr Bin Laden's organisation openly seeks "to kill Americans and the allies, both civil and military," and declares that this is the responsibility of every Muslim.
