well, last monday my mother, a jehovah's witness since her baptism in 1968 died last week because she would not accept a blood transfusion.
she was 76 and had lung and skin cancer.
i know that the cancer would have gotten her anyway, but she was bleeding internally, and was told that she needs a blood transfusion, as her blood count went all the way down to 3.2 (should be 12-14.

I am still numb and angry. I told her after the Doctors told us that she will die, but she stood by her misguided faith and said that she will die and wake up in Paradise. The Elder in the #1 position on her blood card (who hadn't seen her in many, many years) was up there as fast as you could blink...to make sure she couldn't be coerced to take blood.
I've been out of the religion (raised in the "truth" but never baptized) since I left home at 18 years of age in 1983. I was not encouraged one bit my all the JW's in and out every day (counting time no doubt) while she was in the hospital for the last week of her life. If I hear one more person say "she is alive in Jehovah's memory" I am going to punch someone.

the wife and i went to the memorial strictly out of respect for my mother-in-law last night.
luckily our 20 month-old grand-baby was restless and making noise, so i quickly volunteered to take him in the back.

The Wife and I went to the Memorial strictly out of respect for my Mother-in-Law last night. Luckily our 20 month-old grand-baby was restless and making noise, so I quickly volunteered to take him in the back. So I didn't have to listen to the presentation. We hung out in the library/'elders interrogation" room. Surprisingly, I noticed they have a lot of "old" light books in the library, ones I remember from the book studies in the 70's.
One thing that I did hear...an illustration of the "two groups." The speaker likened the groups to tomatoes. He said that there are the first, really good tomatoes - and then there are the extras, the "bumper crop." The annointed are apparently the first tomatoes, used for salads and things like that. The second group, are the kind of tomatoes that you use for tomato sauce and ketchup and things like that. I was like WTF. What a weird analogy.
Also, I remember when growing up, the memorials were always packed with extra chairs having to be brought in...last night there were a smattering of empty seats in the main auditorium, no extra chairs needed. And about five or so people in the "second school" (maybe people that were disfellowshipped?)
Oh, and I saw a couple who's parents studied with my parents in the "Truth" book in the late 60's. I have not seen them in like 30-40 years. I am 50, so they must be in their 70's. I couldn't believe how old they were...and was saddened that they have given their whole lives to the cult...still waiting for the "new system."
all the different congregations around the world hold it at similar local times but they all effectively are at different times relative to each other ... so why does the time matter?.
why the almost superstitious "oh, it must be after sundown".
cause it's not sundown everywhere that second.. god knew the earth was round ... right?.

Had a conversation with my JW Mother the other day. She has been baptized for over 50 years. I've been out for 30 years, but because both my Mother and Mother-in-Law are JW's I keep up with all things JW. Generally we don't talk about the cult, but I drop a few negative bombs when I can. During our last conversation I mentioned the selling of properties, magazine printing cutback and suggested that in a few years, there probably won't be any magazines at all.
For the first time, I could feel a hint of discouragement in her voice. She said 'well, I can't afford one of those "machines" (tablet) and can't afford the internet. I actually felt pity for her, and starting thinking of all the old "faithful" Brothers and Sisters that must feel left behind, and the cult doesn't even care. She said in order to get magazines, you have to specially ask for them, making her feel as if it is a burden to provide her with her "spiritual food." My Mother-in-Law is in the same boat. I asked her if they are going to provide free internet at the KH. That is the least they could do - since they are forcing everyone to go paperless. She said, " I don't know, why don't you call and ask for me?"
I generally have a sense of glee when she doesn't have an answer to some of my negative (yet true) comments and tidbits of anti-JW info, but this time, I truly feel bad for her and the 1000's of faithful old ones that are being left behind, as they are no longer "important." That all being said, does anyone know if the KH's have internet, or provide FREE WI-FI?

i think for me it was the time i saw my dad shun his brother who he had not seen in decades just because he was a da'ed jw.
i thought to my self "no way jesus would do that.
Raised in the "Truth" I moved out of the home at 18. Moved 1000 miles from Oregon to Los Angeles. My parents helped me move, and got me settled in an apartment, got me all set up, and of course found a Kingdumb Hall for me. As an 18-year old 1000 miles away, the last thing I wanted to do was go to the Hall. Although, I probably still believed it was the "Truth."
I had some neighbors that were moving out of my apartment building, and since I didn't have much stuff, they told me to look around and I could take any furniture, stuff they were not taking. Well, I found an old book, Kingdom of the Cults by Walter Martin. I flipped through it and found a section on JW's. Interestingly, it was the only section in the book that had been underlined. I starting reading it and couldn't believe what I had found.
That was it, I read about all the false prophecies, failed dates, 1874, 1914, 1925 - and I was 10 in 1975, so remember thinking the "end" was going to come before I could drive. LOL. Anyway, the failed dates, false prophecies and the scripture in Deuteronomy that describes a false prophet "if what they say does not come to pass...do not be afraid of them." That was the moment - and luckily I escaped baptism :-)
