Asshole Atheism – Not for me, now or ever.
by donny into start off with let me clarify that by asshole atheism i am not referring to strong atheism or any other type of upfront atheism.
what i am referring to is the belligerent, hateful atheism that smacks of trolls and other types who want to derail conversation or comments at any cost..
i enjoy hearing comments from both sides of the subjects of theism, nationalism or politics, especially from those who have intense opinions.

Ayn Rand - Opinions?
by cappytan infor those of you familiar with ayn rand and her ideas on morality, rationality and reason, what is your opinion of those ideas?.
i'm talking about her actual ideas, not the ideals that libertarianism has adopted and, in some cases, perverted.
do you think she's a charlatan?

FayeDunaway: Atlas Shrugged is a really hard (and long) read. Over 1,000 pages, if I recall correctly. But, it helped me to think critically, so I still recommend it to certain people occasionally.
Right now, though, I'm reading The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. Can't very well go around recommending that to my JW friends.

I'm not an objectivist. I frequently contribute to charitable causes and believe that altruism is a positive thing in the right circumstances.
But, looking back over the last 3 years or so, Atlas Shrugged may very well have been responsible for triggering latent critical thinking thus allowing me to eventually wake up to TTATT.

Disfellowshipping and Gangs
by SonoftheTrinity inwhat percentage of disfellowshipped young ones wind up in gangs?
-
cappytan
I'm not going to say none, but I would venture a likely guess would be less than 1%.
According to Wikipedia, "About 900,000 gang members lived "within local communities across the country," and about 147,000 were in U.S. prisons or jails in 2009."
So, that's around 1,047,000 total gang members living in the US as of 2009. The 2009 US population is 306,800,000. So, in 2009, gang members made up 0.341% of the total US population.

Evil, without a social conscience. People would starve and go homeless in her utopia simply because there would not be enough jobs.
Interesting take.
Personally, I wouldn't say evil but I would say misguided and naive.
I personally have always been of the opinion, though, that it's folly to rely on others when it comes to survival. *Relying* on others can only make you complacent. You *have* to rely on yourself to truly survive and to truly get satisfaction out of whatever it is you do. In that respect, I agree with her.
I differ with her on other opinions when it comes to social welfare. I feel, though, that it's more beneficial to teach a man to fish than to give a man a fish.
Providing an education and marketable skills to disadvantaged is more valuable than providing them a check to last them another week.

Do you think she's a Charlatan? Free-thinker? Misguided idealist? Smart cookie? Misunderstood Genius? Idealist for the sake of marketing her books?
If you're unfamiliar with her, here's an interview Mike Wallace conducted with her in 1959:

Am I a Luciferian??
by freemindfade inso my uncle wrote me a long letter out of concern, it was filled with bit of love and concern here and there but also a lot of staunch dogmatic and at times down right disturbing thoughts and assumptions.
if you doubt the bible or jw.org, seems even close family feels you are on a one way track to death by godville.
anyway, he accused me of being a luciferian.

That actually sounds really close to how I'm starting to think. LOL (Aside from the whole mythological symbolism factor.)
You should tell your uncle thanks for turning you on to this philosophy...you'd never heard of it before.

Caleb's Mother Is A Thief!
by Joe Grundy inthe definition of theft under the theft act 1968 is a person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with intention to permanently deprive the other of it.
(england & wales).
i was a cop (mainly a detective) for 30 years and thought of this after mentioning the sparlock video during the jw fs visit today.

Hilarious thought!
Had to check to see if it was borrowed. Nope. To quote Caleb, "Yeah, my friend gave it to me..."
