  Just missed an opportunity to see Richard Dawkins speak at a small venue.

  richard dawkins had two speaking engagements at the local unitarian universalist church last week.. only just heard about it today!.

  guess i should have been more conscious of my spiritual need and i wouldn't have missed it.

  That would be cool to go and hear him speak but I'm surprised a church let him in

  Unitarian Universalists are odd that way. You can be a Buddhist, atheist or theist.

  Bygone Days of Old Bethel...

  something occurred to me last night.

  people that made their pilgrimage to jw mecca (bethel) would often be excited about some silly things, i say silly because for those of you who were there or lived near enough to be involved in these things regularly they lost their magic.

  i am talking about on tours one of the most memorable things people talked about or looked forward to... lunch.

  I used to give Bethel tours. I used to troll people and tell them that tbe Chandelier in the Patterson auditorium lobby was the original chandelier from the first Phantom of the opera. They'd ooooh and ahhhh and then I'd go, "Just kidding! It used to be at the Stanley Theatre." (Or wherever it was supposed to be from. Don't remember exactly.)

  been reading the arguments for the "faithful & wise servant" of mt.

  25:45-51 being an individual versus a "class" or group of christians.

  I tend to agree with the "it's a parable, not a prophecy" crowd.

  See the parallel account in Luke 12:41, 42. Peter refers to it as an "illustration" (rNWT). Other translations and versions render that word "parable."

  Bond is in this part of my brain that stores a bunch of other useless factoids. :-P

  I've read most of the novels. A few of them several times over. I think I've read all of them, but can't remember. I might have to read them all again, just to be sure I didn't miss one.

  As far as the perfect James Bond, a name that was thrown around on the internet that really appealed to me was Idris Elba. I think he'd be excellent.

  I also just want to state that it's not unprecedented for a Bond film to have a theme song that has a different title from the movie.

  Off the top of my head:

  • The Spy Who Loved Me - Nobody Does It Better
  • Octopussy - All Time High
  • Casino Royale - You Know My Name
    
  • Quantum of Solace - Another Way to Die

  Also, I believe there were a few bond films that just had instrumental themes. (Dr. No, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, etc?)

  stretching from china to russia.

  brutal and yet also revolutionary in its law making and society.

  For those interested in an in-depth breakdown of the Kahn empire, you have to give Dan Carlin's Hardcore History's "Wrath of the Kahns" a listen.

  It's fascinating. Great stuff, especially if you have a long commute.
