Would you have married your spouse if you weren't both JWs?
by 3rdgen inok, i've had some wine, but i'm curious.
objectively speaking, but for the religion, did you have enough in common with your spouse to have met and married as non believers?

Cangie, wow the same thing happened to me in 1969. I was only 17 and wanted to end my engagement with my first husband BUT the Watchtower article had just come out about breaking an engagement without fraud involved would be grounds for disfellowshipping. I literally had NO friends or family who weren't JW's and (to top it off) my fiance's father was the congregation servant! I was backed into a corner I didn't know how to escape. -

Thanks Fink. I'm reflecting at the moment. It's all hypothetical because My parents would NEVER have met nor married if it weren't for the cult so I wouldn't exist. However, I would never have met nor married either of my husbands had we met in a "worldly" setting. So here I am. -

we are happy to report to you that we are tired of waiting around for jehovah to do his his whole "armageddon thing" and have instead taken steps to expedite the end ourselves.
we are very confident as "guardians of the doctrine" that we can accomplish this by dismantling the wtbts and its subsidiaries which will, in turn, force god's hand and bring about the coming of jesus riding on a white horse out of the clouds with a sword - or skulls - or scales - err, whatever .

Welcome Hurting, First of all I want to give you a virtual hug (((((hurting))))
I am so sorry you have suffered so much abuse. When a child is born into an abusive household it becomes your "normal". It's all you know and makes you even more susceptible to cult indoctrination. The person reasons that conditional love is better than no love at all.
My hubby and I had mothers who falsely complained to all who would listen how difficult and disobedient we were. We have come to understand that it was a ploy for sympathy and attention. (a form of Munchausen by proxy) It worked beautifully too- our families avoided us and still do. Since most loving parents don't talk smack about their own child our mothers were believed.
Sad to say, these people have no natural affection are are toxic. In order to preserve your own mental health you must set firm boundaries possibly even avoiding them altogether.
You have come to the right place to receive understanding and support. Take care and keep posting.

THE LINGERING SHADOW OF '75
by Terry innone of you are old enough to have been there, i suspect.
i had been in prison two years as a jw conscientious objector when the exciting news about 1975 spread like wildfire.i was paroled from prison in 1969 and immediately began pioneering.
the pressures began mounting throughout the organization.

I was in my last 2 years of high school (68, 69) when the articles, books, talks, and speculation about 1975 started to swell. Of course at that impressionable age and with my uber family's not so subtle influence, I was swept along with the hype.
However Pisstoff makes an important point about the prevailing attitude of now or never sex. My MS, pioneer, son of the Congregation Servant boyfriend pressured me to become engaged to him at age 16. I succumbed and was married at age 17 in 1969. (my father was dead but where was my mother?)
As a married teenager and young twenty something in the 1970's who had overly strict and abusive parents, life was never better! I could FINALLY move away and come and go as I pleased. I didn't realize my hubby was living a double life and didn't believe a word of the hype. We attended parties and gave them, entertained, went to movies every week ETC.
Our new cong was very small (about 30 pubs) when we moved there in '71. By '75 there were almost 80 including the 4 that I studied with. I hate to admit it but seeing that kind of growth and enthusiasm was faith strengthening. The scrip about "10 men taking hold of the skirt of a Jew" was read weekly so it seemed to my young uneducated mind to confirm that Jw's had the truth. I was enjoying my life so much I secretly hoped the big A would be late but didn't DARE breathe a word to anyone not even hubby and he did the same.
When '75 came and went so did many in our KH. I chocked it up to people being "Rice Christians" then selfishly leaving when they didn't receive the big reward. I didn't want to be a selfish person so I stayed willfully and blissfully ignorant like so many others.

I agree with all the comments so far. Another possible factor might be the American record companies and producers in their efforts to appeal to the widest possible audience interfered with the creativity of their artists. (Think Prince in his slave days)
Big business is more interested in quantity than quality.
