THE MOST EMBARRASSING BOOK IN THE BIBLE - UNDERSTANDING THE BOOK OF REVELATION
In a short 36 minute video, Andrew Corbett discusses an alternative view of the Bible book of Revelation. His position is interesting as it attempts to place much of the subject matter of the book in a first century context with Rome as the Seven-headed Wild Beast and Jerusalem as the Great Harlot. I assume the author believes, as some others do, that the popular dating for the book is wrong. Note, Charles Taze Russell and the WTS even get a mention.

WHAT FUTURE FOR THE YOUNG?, Awake! 22 May 1969, pages 14 & 15
YOUNG or old, you need to face up to the fact that this system is not going to change its direction. Under Satan's influence, it will continue to deteriorate rapidly in its remaining years.
The truth of this can be seen in crime statistics everywhere. In the United States the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that in 1968 there was a fantastic 17-percent increase in crime over 1967. This came on top of many years of other large increases. The population, however, grew only one percent last year. So crime exploded seventeen times as fast as the population!
If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things. Why not? Because all the evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years. Of the generation that observed the beginning of the "last days" in 1914, Jesus foretold: "This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur."--Matt. 24:34.
Therefore, as a young person, you will never fulfill any career that this system offers. If you are in high school and thinking about a college education, it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will be well on the way toward its finish, if not actually gone!
This is why parents who base their lives on God's prophetic Word find it much more practical to direct their young ones into trades that do not require such long periods of additional schooling. And trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and others, will be useful not only now, but perhaps even more so in the reconstruction work that will take place in God's new order.
With such practical trades, many young persons have been able to sustain themselves with part-time work. This allows them to spend much more of their time helping interested persons to learn God's requirements for life by studying the Bible with them.
True, those who do not understand where we are in the stream of time from God's viewpoint will call this impractical. But which is really practical: preparing yourself for a position in this world that soon will pass away? or working toward surviving this system's end and enjoying eternal life in God's righteous new order?--1 John 2:17.
In these urgent times, as this wicked system writhes in its death pangs, this counsel from God's Word is most practical for all who want to keep living: "My son, my law do not forget, and my commandments may your heart observe, because length of days and years of life and peace will be added to you."--Prov. 3:1, 2.[Emphasis and italics mine]

A second fulfillment of Daniel 4:10-17, the thread by which their 'spiritual authority' hangs
by JWB ina second fulfillment of daniel 4:10-17, the thread by which their 'spiritual authority' hangs.
if one were to get to the doctrinal root of the present-day wt society, it surely would have to be the belief in 1914 as the beginning of the heavenly reign of christ and the subsequent choosing of a 'faithful and discreet slave' to take charge of all his 'earthly belongings'.. .
the belief is that the 'faithful and discreet slave' has graduated from the one task of serving 'spiritual food' to being essentially the chief representative of jesus in the earthly realm.

A SECOND FULFILLMENT OF DANIEL 4:10-17, THE THREAD BY WHICH THEIR 'SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY' HANGS
If one were to get to the doctrinal root of the present-day WT Society, it surely would have to be the belief in 1914 as the beginning of the heavenly reign of Christ and the subsequent choosing of a 'faithful and discreet slave' to take charge of all his 'earthly belongings'.
The belief is that the 'faithful and discreet slave' has graduated from the one task of serving 'spiritual food' to being essentially the chief representative of Jesus in the earthly realm. Having that view means that all truly faithful JWs believe they must follow all directions given by the Governing Body. To do otherwise would mean to disobey Christ himself. There is no one higher in the ecclesiastical heirarchy, and there certainly is no group of 'anointed' ones to check the hand of the GB (even though they claim to be the representatives of the 'anointed').
Maybe that is why with many JWs you may try to reason with them doctrinally on various beliefs 'peculiar to' JWs but with no effect. Also, if the duly appointed earthly representative of Jesus (as they see it) says 'let there be [new] light', then it comes to be so in their minds. Trying to lop off the various doctrinal branches without being aware of the doctrinal root is, I think, the cause of failure in getting through to many JWs. However, if it can be shown that belief in a second fulfillment of Daniel 4:10-17 is simply an extra-biblical and man-made theological device to give support to ecclesiastical authority, then all of the other doctrinal branches that rely on that support can be shown to be extra-biblical and man-made too. As JWs are well aware, there is a very important Scriptural rule when it comes to matters of doctrine.
"Now, brothers, these things I have transferred so as to apply to myself and Apollos for your good, that in our case you may learn the [rule]: 'Do not go beyond the things that are written,' in order that you may not be puffed up individually in favor of the one against the other." Who Really Was That Servant? (Matthew 24:45-47; Luke 12:39-48)
Here is an interesting record of how the identity of 'That Servant' first came to be connected with the WTS. Please note Russell's initial view that the Watch Tower could function as "That Servant". At the bottom of the page I've written some quotations from the writings of some early professed Christians to show another view of the identity of "That Servant".
__________
The excitement connected with the conspiracy against me [Charles Russell] above referred to temporarily hindered the sprouting of the bad seed of so-called "woman's rights" and ambition, and temporarily Mrs. Russell became very enthusiastic in my support. It was she who first called attention to Matt. 24:45-47, applying it to me in a meeting at Allegheny and subsequently in another meeting with the New York church. I demurred that I had not thought of the passage thus, and declined to make any personal application of it, although I could not deny the force of the argument that it pointed out "that servant," and "fellow servants" and "the household," apparently clearly and designedly distinguishing between these terms. Some little objection was aroused by her interpretation and I urged great moderation in the making of any personal application, suggesting that the WATCH TOWER rather than its editor might be considered "that servant." As an evidence of Mrs. Russell's position on the question, I give a copy of a letter she wrote in defense of her statement of the matter before the New York church, as follows:---
Allegheny, Pa., Dec. 31, 1895.
Mr. Geo D. Woolsey,
Dear Brother in Christ:--- Husband has shown me your kind letter of Dec. 18, the spirit of which was much appreciated by both of us. I am glad to note your frankly stated opinion as to the interpretation of Matt. 24:45-51, and I have carefully examined the arguments and Scriptures you have set forth. Thinking you will be glad to know *how I view the Scriptures you mention*, I will proceed to tell you I fully agree with the interpretation of Isaiah 52:7, presented in the TOWER of Oct., 1881, which you endorse, the one in that case being the Christ, Head and body, of which the living members constitute "the feet."
I also agree that Rev. 16:15 refers to any one of the church who complies with the conditions. The entire statement gives evidence to this effect. It could not be understood otherwise. I also agree that in the parables of the talents and pounds, as in all parables, the thing said is not the thing meant, and that each one here mentioned, as in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, represents a class.
But when we come to Matt. 24:45-51 it appears to me to be a totally different case. Here are brought to our attention---"that servant," "his fellow servants" and "the household." Now, if the Lord wished to indicate a chief servant of the truth, and fellow servants assisting in serving the meat in due season to the household of faith, he could not have chosen more precise language to convey such a thought. And, on the contrary, to ignore such an order and reasonableness in the account, to my mind throws the entire narrative into confusion, making the "servants" (plural) and "that servant" interchangeable terms.
If we should handle all Scriptures thus loosely, it seems to me we could either prove or disprove anything according to our preconceived ideas. It does not seem to me reasonable, nor a justifiable interpretation of our Lord's testimony, to say that the entire household fed itself, and that the Lord gave the meat in season to all together without using any of the number as his agents or servants in the distribution. And if it be conceded that there is a difference between "the household" and "the servants" who minister the meat in due season to the household, then it cannot be denied that our Lord's words also point out one of those servants as specially intrusted with the meat in season and used in dispensing it to the fellow servants and the household in general.
I notice that you do not analyze the text as I do. If you see any way for making these three expressions viz., "that servant," "his fellow servants" and "the household," all mean the same thing without making nonsense out of the entire statement, I hope you will favor me by pointing out how it can be done.
It seems to me, further, that the interpretation which I suggest is the one, and the only one, which corresponds to the fulfillment. We agree in the belief that the Lord is now present, that he assumed his office of King in 1878, and that since that time his household has been richly fed with meat in due season. It seems to me that in dispensing the food to the household the Lord has not given it personally to each member, but from among them he has chosen and used a number of servants, and that all of these servants have been supplied with the meat in due season through *one* particular servant---"that servant." So, both from the construction of the Lord's language and from the facts before us which constitute their fulfillment at the time indicated, viz., in these days of his presence, I can, so far, reach no other conclusions than those I have stated.
However, my object in writing is not to urge my convictions upon you. I merely state them for your consideration, believing you will be interested in examining them, and that you will agree with me that whatever God has expressed in his Word is worthy of our most careful consideration, and is for our instruction and profiting.
With the greetings of the season, in which Bro. Russell joins, Your Sister in Christ,
MARIA F. RUSSELL.[Watch. 1906 Jul 15; extracts from page 215; emphasis mine]
__________
Notes:
The parable of "that servant" is also found at Luke 12:39-48 where a little more detail is given. Below are some quotes from early so-called 'Church Fathers', which suggest that at least some early professed Christians believed "that servant" to represent elders/overseers in the various congregations.
"Such presbyters [elders] does the Church nourish, of whom also the prophet says [Isaiah 60:17]: 'I will give thy rulers [Hebrew = pequddah (administrators)] in peace, and thy bishops [Hebrew = nagas (overseers)] in righteousness.' Of whom also did the Lord declare [Matthew 24:45, 46], 'Who then shall be a faithful steward (actor), whom the Lord sets over His household, to give them their meat in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his Lord, when He cometh, shall find so doing.' Paul then, teaching us where one may find such, says [1 Corinthians 12:28], 'God hath placed in the Church, first, apostles; secondly, prophets; thirdly teachers.'" - Irenaeus Against Heresies (Book 4, chapter 26, paragraph 5)
"Now the more any one sees the bishop [overseer] keeping silence, the more ought he to revere him. For we ought to receive every one whom the Master of the house sends to be over His household, as we would do Him that sent him." - Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians (Chapter 6, first part of paragraph 1, shorter version)
"When therefore, Peter asked whether He had spoken the parable [Luke 12:41-46] 'unto them, or even to all,' He sets forth for them, and for all who should bear rule [compare with 1 Timothy 5:17; Hebrews 13:17] in the churches, the similitude of stewards. That steward who should treat his fellow-servants well in his lord's absence, would on his return be set as ruler over all his property; but he who should act otherwise should be severed, and have his portion with the unbelievers, when his lord should return on the day when he looked not for him, at the hour when he was not aware - even that Son of man, the Creator's Christ, not a thief, but a Judge." - Tertullian Against Marcion (Book 4, chapter 29) -

Well, I'm afraid to say most of the elders, if not all, will continue to side with 'Mother', but that letter was very well written. Just thought the folk here might be interested in the following info.
Some Notes on the Suffolk (UK) Sudbury Congregation
According to information provided in the Sudbury CoJW documentation for the years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, the independent accounts examiner for the congregation for those years was a fellow JW. That person is also a trustee of and contact person for another congregation in the Suffolk area. Check the name and address given for the examiner in the 2008 or 2009 trustees' report against the contact name and address given here.
From the trustees' 2005 Report: "Funds have also been donated to the Society to assist them in carrying out their related religious purposes." "Money loaned to Associated Charities : £56,922.74." "The contribution of £2070 approved by Congregation resolutions for the charitable work of associated Charities." (90 congregation members that year)
From the trustees' 2006 Report: "Money loaned to Associated Charities: £58,817.49" "The contribution of £2060 approved by Congregation resolutions for the charitable work of associated Charities." (85 congregation members that year)
From the trustees' 2007 Report: "Money loaned to Associated Charities: £54,924.40" "The contribution of £2956 approved by Congregation resolutions for the charitable work of associated Charities." (91 congregation members that year)
From the trustees' 2008 Report: "Money loaned to Associated Charities: £80,413.47" "The contribution of £3356 approved by Congregation resolutions for the charitable work of associated Charities." (88 congregation members that year)
From the trustees' 2009 Report: "Money loaned to Associated Charities: £Nil" "The contribution of £3037.99 approved by Congregation resolutions for the charitable work of associated Charities." (87 congregation members that year)
Related to the Sudbury area
In late January of this year (2012), a JW who used to live in the Sudbury area, was convicted and jailed, with the following comments made in an article appearing in Suffolk (UK) local newspaper.
"The victims made allegations to the police after hearing in 2009 that Wood was taking up a role with Jehovah’s Witnesses in another part of the country that would have brought him into contact with young women."
"The court heard that in 2000 the victims told Jehovah’s Witness elders in west Suffolk about what Wood had allegedly done to them but it was left to the girls to decide if they wanted to go to the police."

APPROVAL OF CHILD BAPTISM
"YOUNG PIONEER PARTNERS. Persis, who lives in Cameroon, became an unbaptized publisher when she was six years old. Her first service report showed ten home Bible studies. The congregation secretary thought that it was a mistake. When questioned, Persis explained to him that she actually had ten different students. He further asked: 'How do you know how much time to report, since you do not have a watch?' She replied that she knew that her school recess was one hour long. She started preaching at the beginning and stopped when the bell rang. Her bold witnessing influenced her mother and cousin, who later became unbaptized publishers. Now ten years old, Persis is baptized and is serving as an auxilliary pioneer while in school. Her eight-year-old friend Aasy is already an unbaptized publisher. A Bible student said of them: 'At the meetings I was happy to see children greeting everyone, especially the elderly ones, before going to sit with their parents. I never saw this at my church. I know children growing up that way will be better people in society tomorrow.'" [From pages 53 and 54 of the 2011 Year Book of Jehovah's Witnesses]
"BAPTIZED AT SEVEN. Paola, who lives in western Mexico, is being raised by her grandparents. Her grandmother began studying the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses when Paola was five years old. Paola listened in, and the truth took root in her young heart. Although her grandmother did not progress, Paola began to attend the meetings by herself. She would ask her grandparents to help her get dressed and to help her cross the street to get to the Kingdom Hall.
As soon as she learned to read and write, Paola enrolled in the Theocratic Ministry School and became a publisher. Because of her love for Jehovah, she got baptized at the age of seven. When asked why she attends the meetings and preaches so zealously, even without her family's support, Paola, who is now ten, answers: 'I like the talks a lot because they encourage me to keep on studying the Bible and stay out of trouble. And I preach because I want to teach people what Jehovah is going to do for them in the future and because the Bible can make them happy right now.'" [From pages 58 and 59 of the same book]
Although the percentage, among JWs, of those baptized at a very young age may not be very high, it is clear from the above extracts that children who get baptised as members of the JW religion are seen as deserving of praise. However, there seems to be no concern for a young person's emotional vulnerability and suggestibility to peer/group pressure. Is it right that these little ones should be encouraged to commit themselves to a life under the ecclesiastical authority of the Governing Body and it's local representatives (elders)? Is it right that their emotional vulnerability should be exploited? Is it right for those entering the changeable years of adolescence to be put under pressure to make far reaching decisions that they may later regret?
The links given below show more examples of JW baptism of children.
[9 years old]
"The new baptized members were of an age going from 9 to 90. Gabriele, the youngest, a 9 year old boy, or better, a young man, said: “I know I am only 9 years old, and both mom and dad explained to me that the step I decided to take is a very serious one. I thought deeply about it and I spoke to Jehovah personally in prayer. Today I finally got baptized and it's a great joy ..."
