Would some of us be better off as Witnesses?
by Jerry Bergman ini have often wondered if many people would be better off if they stayed witnesses.
some people i have known have really gone off the deep end after they left the watchtower.
most all of my family have left now (not due to me as i was cut off from them for years) and many others i know who have left are now bitter atheists or have become pagans and worship stones or new ageers playing with crystals.

jerry, u should rent the movie "chocolat" i believe sean Penn is the co starr. not sure about that.
Anyway it takes place in france i think in the late 50's. The catholic church ruled the town , and the mayor ruled the priest. In moved a free spirit woman and her young daughter, and opened a chocolate shop. people loved her b/c she was so kind and non judgemtal. Eventully the church grew to hate her and preached sermons against her. Then only a small handful of people stuck by her. Eventually the mayor grew to weary his irratinal hate of her, and she won them over and the church became a kinder place to go to.It was so much like the jws, i found it astounding. The whole town ruled by the church and they shunned her.Not that the jw could be won over-and that is the point. They are ruled by harsh discipline and not kindess.
Really u should see the movie.

The coming "disassociations"
by Elsewhere ini have seen several threads about how the elders are going to be going around asking people if they still consider themselves to be jehovah's witnesses.
this will undoubtedly result in multiple da announcements in the coming months.
i'm curious how the average jw will perceive this and respond to it.

JT,
LOL, i enjoy your posts. I had a close relationship with an elder for over 20 yrs. and he used to tell me things like"i don't agree with all the wt says, i just keep my mouth shut".
"yes when teh wt says it is a conscience thing-they mean NO good JW would ever think of doing that, but we can't df u for it, but then we can choose who we wish to asociate with, can't we" He once asked me-"you'll never tell another edler anything will u-"i replied no i never will .He kept that to himself. he also sort of was my atty. at one jc meeting i had to go to. sometime having an elder for a friend is okI have planned to lie to them all along- just got to get my hubby on the same page. He won't lie, he still thinks it is the truth, and he'll tell them that, but he's discourged and can't bring himself to go very often. Only occ,He goes so infrequently they give away our mags, and then we have a hard time getting them. Most of the time he'd rather be on the couch watching the cowboys(but not last week-they stunk)
If i didn't know better, i would think they had da us and forgeot to tell us. but people still occ speak to us so guess not.

JT,
u say they can't force us to meet with them. but i have heard so many on jthis jbaord say that they refused to meet with them and they were DA as a result for refusing meet with them..
So, now i am worried b/c i was going to plead ill health and depression etc. Actually this is all true, i'm just going to use it to may advantage. Do u think they would buy, we are to ill to accept help? Both my husband and i have depression, and i have a couple of chroinc illness that would problaby keep me away from the meeting even should i want to go. It seems to me, that if it is known i am ill, and my husband to, perhaps they will leave it be. i only wory b/c i am not ready to DA myself and my husband wouldn't do that anyway. he'd accept help first. So maybe if we tell them we still view ouselfs as jws, just with severe limitations do u think we can get away with that? i know they could say they could d a phone hook up for the meetings, but have chronic fatigue syndorome and am too tired to do that.

While it is true the jw teach the high moral standards of the bible, they break them with a lot. they are some of the the biggest hypocrites i have ever known. the farse about repentence and helping someone back to the org. after they have sinned-well it is a joke. they shun u , plain and simple. So unless u make no mistakes, never have an opinion, i'd leave jw alone. BTW, a number of other religions teach morality.. i live here in texas, and the baptist church and church of christ are very strict religions. Many of the younger generations just regect the morality of the bible . some were never taught this at home. however, My dgt in law comes from a close knit family that does not go to church. but they have good morals. Perhaps churches today are a little like our educational system, not really teaching..Also, as several have noted here, we are only talking about fundalmentalist religions. Others have found different paths.
Btw, i listened to your tape about jw and mental illness. I thought some of your examples were of the extreme nature. Not all jw who have mental illness end up murders. What jw do have now is a real problems with sexual abuse and the aftermath of it and they don't want to deal with it.the very nature of forcing people to worry about every little thing they may do or say, and shunnint\g caues most the depression, anxiety u see. u are just never going to be good enough. yes there still is a lot of mental illness in jws and so u will find that when the org eventually drives these poor people away, as they do, one way or the other, then u have xjw with mental ilness.
ar u thinking of going back to jws?

Being a JW has made me bitter
by mamashel inover the last year after leaving the organization, i have done much research and read many books on the topic of jw's.
i have found peace in the fact that i truely believe that it is a false religion and that i want nothing to do with it ever again.
my problem is that i have been through, like most of you alot of emotions such as fear, anger, stupidity, (that i could allow myself to get involved so deeply in something), and many other feelings too.

Yes, i have allowed jw to make me bitter. And it is so sad, i was so outging, filled with care and my house was always open to those who needed a place to stay. Now i get anxiety attacks around people. I would rather hole up in my house than take a walk. i just have to get a life. this is no way to live.

TY for helping me to clarify my thoughts today. it probably won't last, and i'll have another set back,
but at least for today i am thinking more clearly. I recognize myself in the "punishing myself for leaving" idea. i have thought of this before, but never said it out loud.
I struggled and tried to atttend meetings until the early 90's. I had quit FS in late 80's. i just could not be responsible for bringing another person to the org, to be hurt like i had been.
It does feel comforting to have all the answers. and to feel special. Now i just feel confused and lost. I read about cults, but was in one and did not even recognize it..
If it was just me, i might be able to get over it quicker. But my hubby is not yet where i am at, althogh he does see many bad things about WTS, but chalks it up to human imperfection.
I hope to get out of this purgatory at some time.
