My father once told me the 3 things that motivate most people are wealth, power, and glory.
You put together a large number of men who all have a high school education or less and barely make a living washing windows or some other manual labor job, power and glory become your only two motivators left.

I use this case as my one-liner as to why I am no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
"I cannot belong to a man-made organization that actively protects pedophiles and puts children at risk."

Surreal experience last night.
by objectivetruth inrecently a jw friend that my wife & i knew 3 years ago added me on facebook, after i accepted the request she invited me to a dinner that her and her husband are holding next month.. i imagined that she was unaware of our apostasy, so i declined the invitation on the basis of not wanting to ruin her dinner after the rest of her guests fled at our presence.. i'm never sure how old friends will react when i tell them that i'm no longer a jw.. usually their response is "..... permanent-silence......".
her response went something like this, " we are all out!
everyone that is coming is out we all look forward to seeing you guys so much" it turns out that there will be 6 people at the dinner all friends of ours from a congregation that we attended a few years back.. they have all left the organization recently.. pretty crazy experience..

Does anyone live by any Bible stuff?
by punkofnice inthis is not meant to be a slag off the bible thread.. i had a question asked me the other day and it was: 'do you live by anything from the bible?'.
i had to think about that one because i was force grown in the filthy, disgusting cult of the paedophile loving watchtower(r).. you know what?
i really don't know if i just naturally am a great bloke or if any 'nice' bits in the bible influenced me......or has western culture been influenced by the bible for good and bad?.

In short, yes. Keep in mind that many teachings in the Bible predate the Bible and are accepted by mankind since we began to walk upright. Don't murder; check. Don't steal; check. Treat others as you would have them treat you; check.

I just spent 30 minutes writing this story and lost it all before I hit submit. I'll try to be brief.
Last night a former co-worker of my wife's called saying he was on his way to the house to drop off a job he would like her to do. We haven't seen him in over 8 years. He is a born-in Witness and had already started asking my wife questions as to why we were no longer attending meetings. I knew it would be an interesting visit. Due to my work, I've grown my hair long and have a full beard. So, I knew it would be memorable.
We were all sitting in my living room when he asked me why we no longer attended meetings. He was asking because he truly cares about us and because he takes great joy in being a Witness. I really don't think he was just being nosy and wanting to report someone out of self-righteousness.
I decided to hold nothing back, but also to do it in a way that was kind to him. To seperate the people from the organization. I think I did a good job with this.
I explained that we faded out do to my having to work 70+ hours a week for 3 year period. I then went in to how I began to study things that I could no longer believe in the Bible account of creation, the great flood of Noah's day, etc. All purely science.
I next went into the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society's policies of dealing with reported child sex crimes in the congregation and the "Two Witness" rule that governored them. As a police officer I could not put up with such things and as a human I could not stomach it. I brought up how that the more and more child sex abuse within the Jehovah's Witness religion was coming to the public's attention.
I explained that what also bother me about that issue was how I grew up reading the Watchtower that attacked the Catholic church for clergy pedophila. Both Catholics and Witnesses are imperfect men, but the Watchtower was hypocritical. The Watchtower had to hide these horrible crimes from the general public to maintain the status of the "only true religion".
I went into the UN NGO membership briefly. I asked how the one true religion would voluntarily join the wild beast of Revelation. I didn't spend too much time on that.
I also spoke about the difference in "the light getting lighter" and just imperfect men using their position to enforce their opinions. I spoke on the number of brothers who refused military service when drafted and refused alternative service because they were directed to. As a result they went to prison only to find out years later that the organization reverses its stand on alternative service. I also brought up the thousands who died unnecessarily for refusing blood component treatment only to have the policy changed years later.
I went into other things, but I brought it all to close with this: I love the brothers and sisters. I wish peace be upon them. It would pain me to know that a brother, who truly enjoyed being a Witness, leave the organization and his joy because of something I said. I explained that it is why I keep my thoughts to myself and avoid speaking to Witnesses, especially about my beliefs. I made it clear that I could not violate my morals by being associated with an organization responsible for the things I spoke about, but I also do not hold it against him or anyone else who choses to do some. I told him that I would never turn my back on a Witness just because they are a Witness, and that it is unfortunate that the organization will not allow the reverse. I told him that his risks being disfellowshipped simply by speaking to me.
I could tell that all of this was making him think. He told me that he was unaware of just about everything I said. He began to use the "imperfect men" excuse in regards to the issue of child sex crimes, but then stopped himself.
He then ended the conversation with this: "Maybe we can get together again, but lets just keep that to ourselves."

There are laws in many of the 50 United States of America that the policies and practices of Jehovah's Witnesses violate. In my state we have laws that make it a criminal offense to fail to report child abuse and felonies (sexual assault of a child being a felony). Sex offenders are required to register with local authorities by both federal and state laws. Failure to do so is a new felony offense. Often there are laws that prohibit some sex offenders from being around children our public places intended for children.
I suggest identifying sex offenders in local congregations via government run websites Intended for that purpose. Educate the public and local authorities on the policies and practices of Jehovah's Witnesses in concealing such crimes/persons.

Demons - Possession - Dreams & Witnesses
by objectivetruth ini would like to get some opinions from you all.. .
have you known a lot of witnesses that have dealt with demon issues?
have you personally dealt with problems with demons?

Objectivetruth:
i do not have specifics for you. Only speculation. My father professes to be of the anointed and was an uber elder in the circuit/district back in the 70s and 80s. He often communiticated with the WTB&TS.
I often noticed that those in the congregations I belonged to who complained of demonic attack just happened to be on psych meds or stated they used to take them, which means they should still be taking them.
These "demonic" experiences always came in the form of hearing or seeing things only they witnessed. I remember one family where the husband, wife and one of their three daughters were all mentally ill and when they were off there meds it was a living hell for the elders. I remember another sister who saw vans that followed her around. The couple who studied with her convinced her it was demons and that psych meds were poison. She turned into one of those hoarder cat ladies who washed everything in salt ( not salt water, but pure table salt) to wash out the demons.

In the 1970s my father did a study on the number of mentally ill becoming one of Jehovah's Witnesses. The number was high and he received orders from the Watchtower Society to bury the study. Historically, demon possession and other related topics are in reality persons dealing with physical or mental illness.
