Are there 'ultra strict' congregations?
by jambon1 inwhen i studied as a young adult, it was in one of those congregations.
having viewed the religion as a quaint little band of christians it conpletely dumbfounded me when i was told about such rules as 1 - no beards.
2 - you must wear a suit to meetings and while giving a talk.

I once knew an elder that thought that he walked on water. He was the self appointed JW Gestapo, always looking down his nose at others and in everyone's business. It had come to his attention, that a group of "friends," brothers and sisters, would get together on Friday night. There were anywhere between 10-15 people. They would eat snacks, popcorn, watch a movie, or play some music, make cookies, and socialize. Some of those in attendence would play cards...even play poker with poker chips. They was no money involved, but he figured that it was akin to gambling....and wrong in his eyes as Joke-hova's agent. Well, he decided to crash the event. He entered the house and raised "holy hell." He was pretty close to overturning the table like Jesus did to the money changers at the temple. He gave everyone a dressing down, checked the content of the movie being watched, counsoled them on gambling, and told them that they should be preparing for field service instead of partying. Needless to say, 2 men had stepped down from being misery servants and others lost "privileges." The fraternization was disbanded and he gave a local needs part several weeks later. He was really full of himself.

At the start the 1st Gulf War, attendence soared as many were expecting "The End." The numbers dwindled down to the usually level after several months. The same thing happened with the 2nd Gulf War. After 9/11, the hall was filled with people for weeks afterwards but the apathy returned and attendence dropped. The invasion of Iraq and Afganistan brought many more inactive ones back for a cursory appearance for awhile. I don't think this will continue to occur after every global crisis or conflict. Crying wolf only lasts for so long....think about WWI, WWII, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War...Cuban Missle Crisis.....Makes me think of Billy Joel and "We didn't start the Fire."

Prison chaplain.
by quellycatface ini'm rather gobsmacked to hear that an elder in my ex congregation has been appointed a prison chaplain (in the uk).
the reason for my disbelief, is that, this particular prison is for "schedule 1" offenders - covering sex crimes, child abuse/paedophilia and even downloading child pornography.
the reason for my reaction is that he has at least 9 "disciples" who have a bible study but i cannot help but think that when they are released, they will be part of a congregation, where they will have access to children and vulnerable people?

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." This guy is playing with fire to massage his "theocratic" ego. Can you imagine the adulation he receives from the rank and file to minister to these incarcerated inmates? Once a sex criminal, always a sex criminal. That's why they are required to register in many countries around the world. The odds are against him that one or more of these people will offend again. I see another round of future lawsuits that will drain the org of their lifeblood, money. Give the org enough rope and they will hang themselves. Unfortunately, it will be a the expense of young children that will be scarred for life. So sad.

A truly sad story. I was in the same predicament, though not nearly to his extreme. It was very tough. My heart bleeds for him and I empathize with his situation. Unfortunately, these children will grow up without a father. The upside? The heartless money grubbing bitch can't get $6500 a month when he is dead. I hope Karma comes back around and pays her back, big time.

Aren't you a bit amazed that the WTS/JWS is still around ?
by Finkelstein ini know i am, to me its a bit of a peculiar anomaly that the wts is still around and functioning in reflection of its decades and now complete century that the wts has been bullshitting to people .
organizations like the church of god have shrunk dramatically from its heyday of the 1980's, this too was another organization that spread and grew by publishing its own magazine proclaiming a armageddon soon doctrine and its main publication was called " the truth " .
i'm guessing some of this has to do with the fact that people who get lured into this cult aren't aware of its past, its doctrines, the people who started it and so forth.

I'm not surprised at all. The many meetings each week provides a constant flow of Org propanganda and brainwashing. It use to be 5 meetings for about 5 hours plus field service, special assemble days, circuit assemblies, and district assemblies. Being surrounded 24/7 by the JW "friends and family" gives little time or opportunity to think critically. With the org website, music, videos, and the monthly GB talk show host pitching the most recent made up doctrinal change....these stunted viewers have nothing else to enter their minds. Honestly, I feel so sorry for them, slaving for the org with the carrot hanging in front of them until they die.
