The "Imperfect Men" Argument
by steve2 inone of the most common "defences" of jw organization is that "the brothers" are imperfect yet still strive to follow god's word.
"sure, they make mistakes," so the argument goes, "but so did god's people in the past, including in bible times.
" the key point is their readiness to keep studying god's word and learning from their mistakes.".

With this, they can eat their cake and have it too.
They are spirit-directed, but not spirit-inspired. Their directives are to be viewed as coming from Heaven, but they are not infallible. We must be ready to obey, even if it doesn't make sense, our lives depend on it! Unity at all costs! If we say this green book is black, it's black!
And if you do not accept any of this...say goodbye to your friends and family. The cost of treating them as imperfect men with imperfect directives is quite high.

Thank you, George Couch!
by charonsdog ini just thought i'd share this story from my past.. back in the 80s i remember the big problem seemed to be about music.
(today, it's tight pants, i guess) the organization, society, whatever they were calling themselves, were always going on about the music we listened to.
disco, heavy metal, the whole "backwards masking" thing...couldn't escape hearing or reading about how satan was corrupting us unless we were listening to kingdom melodies or elevator music.. i was assigned to wtf in the late 80s and remember one of the articles stating that "young people know that the rhythm of rock music is the rhythm of sexual intercourse.

No, wasn't Rogers.
I wonder if it was part of an outline from the Branch. Or else somebody borrowed from someone else's material.
I remember him playing the chorus of Sentimental Journey as well...and then launched into an attack on sentimentality.

Some time in the 80's when the Queen song "Another One Bites the Dust" was popular, a CO got up on stage and was foaming at the mouth about the dangers of "debasing" music. "Another One Bites the Dust" was Exhibit A.
So, during his talk, he played a snippet of the song.
Awesome, thinks teenage me. First cool thing ever to come thru the assembly hall speakers.
Next, the CO says, "Now, listen to that same snippet, played backwards".
So next, the sound guys plays (what the CO claims) was the same snippet, but played in reverse.
It sounded like this: "Dfertrver soiyter mqwexdrtyybg".
Thee snippet ends. There is dead silence in the auditorium.
"See?" exclaims the CO. "Did you hear that?!?!? They were singing 'decide to smoke marijuana' !!!!"
A collective gasp rose from 1500 throats, as 1500 people decided that "Dfertrver soiyter mqwexdrtyybg" really DID sound like "Decide to smoke marijuana".
I remember that exact same part of the circuit assembly in Central VA. Sounds like you had "Brother" Rogers, or else he borrowed this or some CO borrowed from him.
Rogers professed to be of the "anointed", so my family was in awe of him. He gave this whole talk of what being resurrected to heaven might be like.

Couple of real gems in the WT study for this upcoming weekend
by sir82 insince blondie seems to still be on sabbatical, i'll take the liberty of highlighting a couple of "gems" from this week's upcoming study, from the article "reject worldly thinking".. from paragraph 12:.
is it true that succeeding in a secular career that offers power and prestige leads to lasting happiness?
remember that the craving to control others and the longing to be admired are the desires that enticed satan, but he is angry, not happy.. .

Leah Remini on Paul Higgis accusations
by John Davis ini was wondering what people think of leah remini's comments on the paul higgins accusations.
she has said that the 5 women that have accused him of rape and sexual harassment are not to be trusted.
she says that because 3 of them want to stay anonymous that must mean that they are not accurate statements.

Whether the allegations are true or not doesn't invalidate his documentary Going Clear.
Nor does it invalidate the suffering that Scientology has left in its wake.

The subtle message at every circuit and district assembly, and at many meetings is: Pioneer or die!
If you COULD pioneer, but don't, you might be making God angry. You are not putting God first. You are not whole souled. You are giving token service. You are lukewarm. You are giving a blind and lame sacrifice and thus you are unclean.
Could you do more?
Could you do more?
Could you do more?

I'm so glad to be away from this cycle of guilt.
Back when I regular pioneered after high school, the hours were 90 a month. I only made it 6 months...I couldn't even do the full year.
I bought tickets for concert...and then later it turned out that there was a special meeting for pioneers that same evening. I paid money for the tickets and really wanted to go. My father guilted me over this, telling me I was like Esau, trading my birthright for a bowl of soup. In retrospect, I'm glad I went to the concert instead! The pioneer meeting was really the worthless bowl of soup. I chose wisely.
