  ADVICE NEEDED

  i need some advice on this one: a friend of mine who is still an active jw called me today all freaked out because another friend of hers, who only got baptized this summer, wants to leave "the truth".

  this is because she's been talking to "worldly" people and they've almost got her convinced that the religion is a cult.. .

  my girlfriend, sarah says of course, that this is "satan" trying to blind her, etc.

  At this stage of the game if you tell her how you really feel about the Organization, she'll be even more convinced of Satan's craftiness and wickedness in trying to entice others away from the "trooth" and will most likely turn on you also. I'd try to get information from her about why this friend wants to leave and slowly focus her attention on these reasons. Not everyone is inclined to believe and fall in line just because the old geezers say it's so.

  who knows, it may spark a little critical and independent thinking on her part.

  being a jehovah witness, did you feel obliged to have a 4 door car?

  once i bought a 2 door car, and everyone was looking at me as if i commited a crime.

  i then reasoned with them saying, "didn't jesus send his deciples by groups of 2?".

  I remember being out in service with my wife and the dirty looks we'd receive from those "Oh so theocratic elders", when we'd park our then 2 door Sports Car amidst there 4-door family trucksters. I also remember how we'd be avoided and often left behind while out in service when it was over. I guess they didn't want to be overly influenced by our materialistic attitudes regarding transportation.

  My wife's car, which she chose, is what could best be described as one of those family trucksters great for projecting the theocratic image, while I on the other hand, drive a high performance Japanese sports coupe.

  Guess which one she prefers to drive the meetings....

  BTW....THERE'S NO WAY IN HELL MY CAR WILL EVER BE USED IN SERVICE !!!!!!!!!!!!

  Snoopin' Elders! Has this happened to you?

  have any of you known or heard of elders snooping and rummaging thru yours or anyone else's personal belongings?

  perhaps to find "evidence"?

  That is so true.

  I was in an electronics store with my wife and a couple of in-laws when they started talking about the movie Angel Heart. they started talking about how much the movie was demonized and how they didn't like it. Well, I chimed in and said that I did like it and that I thought it was a great movie with a compelling story to tell. I get these dirtly looks from them and they say sarcastically "You Liked that movie?", to which I respnded with a resounding and very firm, "YES".

  I guess since they outnumbered me three to one, they expected me to acquiesce (sp) and just follow their line of thought since they were on a roll.

  It's interesting that these same people will justify and rave about the Star Wars saga, a movie that contains the same basic spiritualist (the force) overtones.

  we had 2 english and i italian cong, in the old hall.

  when i stop and think of all the Dr, Lawyers, Dentist, Air Line Pilots, Dancers, movie stars , country western singers, R&B, CEOs , Scienctist, etc that many of us could have been YEARS AGO- set with nice retirements ahead of us,

  that's the exact thing I was thinking when the elder "Cheese Cracker Men" were in my house telling me I was wasting my time by going back to school and pursueing educational and financial goals 8 or 9 years ago.

  every negative "what If" they proposed only strengthened my resolve to make it happen. I often think that had I listened to them, I'd still be flipping burgers struggling month to month to pay my bills.

  Dunked in 91, coincidentally the same year they got in bed with the UN.

  Stopped going to meetings altogether a year later. Couldn't stomach the hipocrisy and refused to shut down common sense and independence.

  disfellowshipping on smoking.. especially smoking a cigar from time to time does not have to be harmfull.

  but i personally have disfellowshipped persons for smoking sigarettes, although i never saw a good biblical base.i mean ..how many filthy fat friends did we have, addicted to sugar, carbs, and you just knew they were going to have health-problems sooner or later.

  now i smoke cigars, maybe one good cuban a day, and i am slim, active and can run 10 miles without any problems.. who had the same doubts about this dogma?

  I have never known a person DFed for Gluttony, yet according to the bible it is grounds for shunning.

  My guess is that they justify obesity my attributing it to a possible genetic defect. They always have an excuse for everything.

  i understand that between 1970 and 1995, one-third of the jehovah's witnesses worldwide left the organization.

  the figure is 55% for those in the u.s.a.these figures would seem to mean that there are a lot of dissatisfied jw's!

  if you were to ask a jw's,why so many would want to leave if there is such a wonderful atmosphere of love among the witnesses, could they give you a good reason?

  They'll blame it on that persons heart condition and rationalize that those who left were just seduced by the immoral lifestyle and chose to abandon Jehoober.

  Reading Other Books

  when one looks at the watchtower publications they soon notice that the writers quote from many different books and encyclopedias in order to try to prove their beliefs and teachings.i would assume that the authors of the articles read these books in detail so as to be certain that they are quoting in context.since they read and quote from so many sources,it seems to suggest that there are many good books on the market that are not written by jehovah's witnesses and yet contain a lot of truth which agrees with watchtower's teachings.so for any lurking jw's,are you free to read these various books?why can the authors of the watchtower publications in brooklyn read these books but not the average jehovah's witness?

  Doing what it takes to live in the real world coupled with watchtower studies, book studies, preparing for meetings, service, etc. etc. leaves no time for reading the various books quoted in WT or Awake magazines and authenticating the context of what they really say, and that's just the way Lords of Discipline in Brooklyn would have it. For the average witness, taking time to read these books, or even the Bible for that matter will draw attention away from finding converts indoctrinating studies selling magazines spreading the "good news" of the kingdom.
