  What do atheists and agnostics typically do for their funeral services?

  in contemplating my current beliefs in life right now, it occured to me that my views as an agnostic would probably make for a strange funeral service if my friends and family were to have one.

  strange in that most funeral services always have some mention of god, and some religious context with afterlife explanations.

  has anyone ever been to a non-religious funeral service for someone who was atheist or agnostic and what was it like?

  An atheist funeral would be nice, i'd imagine. Staying clear of the theological stuff, just talking about the person. The witness funerals i've been to were just another chance to squeeze in more crap about everlasting life and hope for the dead, the person came second. Always.

  Heck, at the burial of my aunt's ashes (who was never a witness), my father (the only witness on that side of the family) spent a good 10 minutes telling them about how she was going to be resurrected and armageddon wasn't far off. I was so irritated that he had to bring in religion.. not even HER religion but HIS. Completely unnecessary and disrespectful. I'd have thought the same even if I was still a dub.

  i met up with "jabberwock" last night, who took me a real american diner here in new jersey.

  it would seem the apostate community are the true "congregation", in that every time i meet with ex-jw's i am shown genuine hospitality.. jabberwock - thank you!!.

  I think many of you will return to the religion one day

  i don't mean this as an insult, more of a life experience thing.

  i saw a lot of people leave in my years there and a lot were angry with the religion and the people, and some even protested the kingdom halls and wrote things in the newspapers.

  a lot though, came back in time, as it was just the comfort zone they felt at ease in.

  Right.. but they all fall under the word 'proof' as well. That's what I didn't understand. Didn't really want to get into a quibble over semantics here. But because you said " I did not say without evidence. I said without proof."

  Proof = Evidence, the definitions are synonymous.

  Why would anyone want to return to a dying religion? It doesn't even have any longer the appeal that it did in its hey-day - the 50s.

  Well, let's be fair. This thread was originally started in 2006 - since then, new light has been shed on the matter. It turns out the WT is a bigger turd than we all previously thought.

  tec, to discuss such a subject without considering evidence is a waste of time. How is it even possible to discuss the existence of God without referring to proofs from one side or the other? If all you can base a claim on is a feeling you have, then a true dialogue between sides is impossible.
