when prime minister tony blair was 'summoned' to camp david a couple of day's ago, he looked succinctly uncomfortable when doing a press interview with president bush.
today, the prime minister faces the tuc conference, the main agenda covering the impending war on iraq.
british public opinion is very much for the action to not take place against iraq.
I don't think many would have a problem with the US or a coallition invading Iraq again if some clear and covincing reasons for doing so could be produced. One has to wonder why the world community and the UN has not been sufficiently convinced if the evidence is so "abundant and clear".
Why has the US not pushed the whole Iraq thing in the last 10 years and waited until now? Why did they not finish the job they set out to do in the Gulf War? Were not these the same reasons we heard then? So why now?
It appears the Bush administration wants Iraq dealt with and must capitalize on the whole September 11/terror thing before this "opportunity" passes. In times of fear and paranoia, the government knows they don't need as strong arguments to convince their people to go to war.
The problem is if they do go to war, what precedents will this set for other countries that need a reason to invade those that they have problems with. Will the US stand up to a country like China or Russia if they become aggressors against territories they are in conflict with or will they turn blind eyes to these more powerful nations? Will an invasion of Iraq result in more favorable mid-east relations or will it worsen them? Bottom line - will these invasions have the desired effect of greater world security and peace?
The world community is not necessarily indefinitely opposed to an invasion of Iraq imo, they just are demanding more convincing arguments.

this story should be in most candian news papers tomorrow morning.
also look for it on the radio.
also we have had major local tv news play in toronto.
This letter was found in yesterday's issue of the Toronto Sun newspaper...
Sunday, September 8, 2002As one of Jehovah's Witnesses in the area for nearly 30 years I can honestly say it was disturbing to read in your article ("Storm in the Hall," by Brodie Fenlon, Sunday Sun) - the allegations of the Jehovah's Witness organization covering up allegations of child abuse. While the outcome of this case remains to be seen, with all of the recent exposure in the media it is hoped that the church leaders will recognize that their elders are simply not qualified to investigate crimes of this nature and bring all allegations of crimes to the authorities without exception. I also hope that if errors have been made in the past that the church will do the honorable thing and acknowledge the harm they have caused and do what they can to help these ones recover from what happened.
-Randy J. Bigham
Bramptoneditor's comments: We should expect nothing less of any church.
news release.
the upcoming september 9, 2002 child abuse civil court trial of victoria boer v. the canadian jehovahs witnesses organization 10:00 am, courtroom 4-4, 361 university avenue, toronto, ontario as reported in the september 1, 2002 edition of the toronto sun.
silentlambs inc. (www.silentlambs.org) accuses the jehovahs witnesses (jws) organization of fostering an environment for child rape, ignoring abuse survivors, protecting child molesters and expelling jehovahs witnesses who have tried to support the victims and alert the public.
If it is true that the trial may last two weeks, what would be the best time to take a day or two off work to attend? Is there any date in particular where a large show of support would be desired? Any mini apostatests planned where we can meet up with those from out of town who might be visiting? Any idea on how long the court will be in session each day?
Thanks...

ok everyone...what is everyones opinion on terrorism...i myself, feel that something else is going to happen, possibly on 9/11/02....what is everyone else's thoughts....not necessarily the same as mine...but does anyone think another attack will come?
if so what do you think, and when?
just some thoughts for the mind.....q
Just my opinion Yuru. If I lived in the US I don't think I'd care for an atmosphere of paranoia over what could happen anywhere at anytime without warning. That mentality is probably the biggest victory for terrorists if they can convince you to live in fear.

You might be concerned or you might be legitimately curious but any answer anyone gives on this subject is pure speculation. And I personally think the question is not "healthy" or constructive during what is likely a sensitive time for the American public.

over the last few months, changes have occured on this board.
many that complained have either left or post limitedly.
constant swearing is no longer accepted.
These boards seem to go in cycles. There are periods of peace and quiet and then there are periods of serious discussion and sometimes unrest. I think anyone who thinks the presence of moderators will change the natural cycles of these boards is nieve. Moderators merely add another dimention.
I don't put significant weight to anything that takes place here, because whatever happens always passes and these places are constantly evolving. Disputes will be forgotten and periods of peace will inevitably evolve into times of "war" - whether moderators exist or not.
I did especially enjoy the place this website originally was, but we all change and new people join and so the atmosphere changes too. And while change is often uncomfortable sometimes there is no other choice but to live with it and make the best of it.

there seems to be a lot of discussion these days about iraq, even on this site, which i think can be handled in one easy illustration.. if your family was mugged, and the mugger without question is going to shoot and kill them, but you have the opportunity to shoot and kill the mugger first, would you not do it?
no time to discuss the consequences with the mugger, cannot discuss with said mugger on how he would "feel" if you shot him, no time for anything.
if you do not react, he will kill your family without question, without hesitation.
... and would you shoot through a crowd of innocent people to kill this "mugger"?
Your analogy is so full of holes and over-simplifications and a more accurate one would truly reveal the complexities and difficulties involved.
Maybe you should travel more to other parts of the world. See the families and their children for what they are and not the faceless "collateral damage" they will become. Realize that terrorism is the only way these countries can attack America and that terrorism is not stopped by the death of one man and his supporters but is inspired by these martyrs.
Why is America seemingly singled out by these terrorists? America needs to change the way the world perceives it and only then will it will it be safer. It is just not feasible or reasonable to imagine you can kill everyone that hates you.

there is no doubt in my mind that the glory days of jehovah's witnesses are over.
from my knowledge and experience with wt history, i would define the glory days as the decades of the 1950's, 1960's and early 1970's.
with knorr's great expansionary vision and discipline, dubs in the 1950's became a "somebody" in the 1950's.
Good post... Once people realize the ship is sinking and people are quietly slipping into the life boats, the mentality that "no one wants to be the last off a sinking ship" will take over hopefully.
Too many are discouraged and tired and uninspired. It is only a matter of time.

hi defender: .
first and foremost, the silly little watchtower god they call by the english name jehovah plans to kill billions of people at their battle of har-megeddon.
thier little god supposedly has already killed every human and land animal save noah and company about 5,000 years ago.
I came across an interesting quote (imo) in today's Toronto star..
Public policy, even if based on reasonable fear, must be examined rationally and weighed not just against possible threat but against the ideals we claim to believe in.
If you can appreciate the essence of the ideals America and the free world claims to live by and uphold, you would appreciate a broader picture and the need to make a clear case for war beyond the belief that someone might attack you first. No one can claim to live by certain ideals and then expect credibility when they abandon them when put to the test.
It would seem Bush has decided to go the route suggested in Max's post and give the UN one more try. I think if this fails then he will have more justification to take care of unfinished business. http://www.msnbc.com/news/804800.asp
Of course, why he didn't choose this route innitially is beyond me and his inflammatory comments in the meantime haven't exactly helped to win over support. Just because you have military supremacy doesn't mean you can dispense with playing the political games where you need to win over, not just your own country's support but also much of the world's.
