  Christmas Greetings around the globe

  here on the pacific coast of australia it's 2:00 am and mrs ozzie and i have just returned from a candle-lit xmas service and it's now christmas day here.

  the air conditioners are going flat out and the ocean temperature right now is 22 degrees celsius.

  Bible is God's word?

  id like to hear some *reasoned* explanations for why you believe the bible is gods word.

  ive been so fascinated by the study of *real* biblical scholarship since i began educating myself, i now find it incredulous that i used to take the bible as divine, along with all jws and tons of christians, including a good number here.

  so id like to entertain your very best lines of evidence that this is the real deal.. mox

  The Thread that "kills" the WTS

  many opinions have been expressed on this board as to what is killing the society today.

  i am positive that issues such as the un scandal, the pedophile issue, etc.

  are having a negative effect and contributing to a general slackening off and sense of malaise amongst the rank and file.

  I figure as long as the WT prints magazines, there will be JW's that will believe no matter what to distibute them. Very few will join and a solid core will believe irregardless of gaping holes in doctrine until they die.

  Truth matters very little to the average JW so I see the 1914 doctrine almost becoming irrelevant in the bigger picture. It should matter, but I don't think it will.

  I know there are alot of JW's in cuba and many Canadian JW's bring alot of things down for them because they do not have much. I would think the isolation of the island would mean their are not many well-informed xjws.

  Since they are poor and the culture is spanish, it is the perfect environment for JW's to flourish and there still is a facination with things "american". Maybe a copy of COC in spanish would go far in the right hands.

  I will be in Holguin, Cuba mid January. Pack an old suitcase with everyday things you can give away as gifts.. like shoes, clothes, soap, pens etc. People don't have much there.

  The big talk with parents - need help!

  my husband and i have decided to start a family this summer.

  as exciting as that may be there's one issue that weighs heavily on my mind - what to do about both our sets of jw parents.

  should we lay some ground rules down with them before the baby arrives (which they will probably break anyway)?

  I like the replies here so far...

  I don't have kids and if I did they probably would have zero contact with my parenst since they have zero contact with me. But if you have somewhat of a relationship with them, I'd be so firm with them that if they screw up once and take them to a meeting or discuss "the truth" with them in any way they are forfeiting their right to their grandchildren.

  I think every child deserves grandparents. I also feel strongly that no child should be subjected to anything to do with this cult as a minor. Leave the choice up to them as to whether they want a relationship with their grandkids or not.

  i know there are soo many new people on this board in the past year or so, and i haven't been posting a whole lot lately i've been busy with school and what not, but i did want to kind of give a bit of an update and hopefully some encouragement for those that are in the process of leaving the borg, and have left friends and family behind.

  I thought this was one of your more interesting posts Venice...

  I sometimes forget how horrible it was when everything I believed in turned out to be a lie and sometimes it is good to remember that when talking with active JW's. Most of us here made a huge decision when we left and sometimes I think how remarkable it is that we made it past that dark period.

  There is an incredible peace once the dust settles and things have worked out rather well for me. I know that others are not so fortunate and it is something that I think about often.

  Your comments on dealing with feelings as they happen I think are good. Too many I know never dealt with them and maybe went overboard on a few things to bury their pain. For a while these people can shine and be on top of the world but eventually all these things they have ran away from come back to haunt them.

  People that manage to work through the pain will find themselves much stronger for having suffered through it. I wouldn't wish something so horrible on anyone, but unfortunately it seems to be the only way out and I respect everyone that could make that choice.

  One thing that stood out from this article was the lack of mention of the option of getting proffessional counselling. It reflects the attitude of the Society that prayer, study, service and "thinking positive" etc are magic solutions to every problem, including complex ones like moving beyond the trauma of rape.

  The article still has enough language in it that reinforces it's past statements on the subject in the mind of a JW, while giving a completely different impression to the non-JW reader.

  I can only say that their maintaining their position on this subject is absolutely sickening. To continue to mention the subject in this way still can leave many JW woman that suffered rape and did not scream feeling guilty that they didn't do enough and that is simply wrong.

  WT leaders are so out of touch with the real world that simply understands that "rape is wrong". They live in the past where they still believe a woman might have somehow "deserved" or "encouraged" rape by her conduct or dress (they would reference the Dinah account in the Bible), or that she might not have done enough to resist such an attack.

  Few things disgust me more than the WT's handling of this particular subject.

  ok, so this hasn't happened (as yet), but in spite of the article being written in jest, it certainly seems like something that would happen if the administration thought they could get away with it.. http://theonion.com/onion3847/bill_of_rights.html.

  washington, dcflanked by key members of congress and his administration, president bush approved monday a streamlined version of the bill of rights that pares its 10 original amendments down to a "tight, no-nonsense" six.. above: as supporters look on, bush signs the bill of rights reduction and consolidation act.. a republican initiative that went unopposed by congressional democrats, the revised bill of rights provides citizens with a "more manageable" set of privacy and due-process rights by eliminating four amendments and condensing and/or restructuring five others.

  the second amendment, which protects the right to keep and bear arms, was the only article left unchanged.. calling the historic reduction "a victory for america," bush promised that the new document would do away with "bureaucratic impediments to the flourishing of democracy at home and abroad.".

  new strategy to da/df millions who have left.

  i'm wondering if there isn't a new policy of da'ing all those who no longer attend or are inactive "publishers" (find that in the bible!).

  i've read a number of threads on this board whereby people are now being hunted-down, nazi-fashion, if when queried, "are you one of jw?

  This all is rather facinating. An "internal ministry" has long been overdue and I think the Society realizes that it is more productive to seek out inactive members than to be knocking on strangers' doors.

  I would say most inactive ones still believe "it is the truth" and hope to return one day and the Society is capitalizing on this. The people they would like to DA make up a very small fraction of inactive ones, but I would say this is at least an unspoken objective.

  Personally, i think the best way of handling them when they call (if you don't want to outright DA yourself) is as JT mentioned... Say it is a bad time right now (just heading out for an appointment etc) and get their phone number and tell them YOU will contact THEM when it is convenient for a visit. Thank them and CLOSE THE DOOR and don't say any more.
