I'm no art critic, but the painting was very beautiful. Interesting emotion in her face and great colours in the blanket or whatever she is sitting on in the boat. :)

no attempt her at subtrafuge, just thought i'd kick off a subject with an anology.
when i eat breakfast, i usually have one of three things, something with eggs, something sweet or just the coffee!
how much of what i injest for the start of my day is controlled by the culture i live in and the habits i have come to consider "normal"?
I've said the same, that we will carry our scars to our graves. Perhaps one day I can accept them better and wear them with pride for having stood for something.
I wonder for those who feel no loss, those who have no "scars". As great a gift freedom is, it has come at a high price for many of us.

An interesting topic. The thing is, most of us would not be here if something in our personalities had not moved us to go outside what had been prescribed "food" for us.
There are several ways of looking at things, and the more one does, the more humble one gets when he realizes that one way of looking at things is not necessarily the only or right way.
Many Witnesses somehow think that the Society has researched everything in detail (ie. the beliefs of other religions). The truth of the matter is why would they, except to find fault and flaws in them (the very thing we are not to do to our own religion). The reality is that people who write what is in the publications for the Society have only really known Jehovah's Witnesses and our critical views of everyone else.
I do not believe everyone is "out to get Jehovah's Witnesses" or there is some world-wide agenda to wipe us out or that we are somehow these major players in a universal "chess game". The reality is that we are merely a speck on the world scene and to limit ourselves to what we see in our own "fish bowl" is simply imprisoning our minds to foolish and ignorant thinking.
If there is anything the history of religion has taught us, it is the dangers of letting others do our thinking for us.

this has been brought up from time to time in other posts relative to other arguments but i thought it deserved its own thread.. the first century christians formed congregations.
there is no debate about this.
that these congregations were not entities unto themsleves is attested to by the travels and subsequent letters of the apostle paul.
Meeting together outside of what is arranged by the organization presents a catch 22.
Any attempt to follow the Biblical advice to fellowship and discuss the Bible leads to apostacy charges and disfellowshipping.
Not associating leads to one not following the Bible.
my wife's congregation recently bought some land to build a new kh on it but then signed over the ownership to an offshore company controlled by the wtb&ts.
they were told that it would make it harder to 'grab' when 'the persecution begins'.. has anyone else heard anything like this?.
it sounds like a way of getting real-estate to me and from what i've heard, sounds a bit dodgy.
The thing I can't figure out, is aren't the Governments supposed to bring down false religion first, and then attack us?
It almost seems to be taking place in reverse these days, and when the final "persecution begins" as you said, of what benefit is property anyway?

is it just me, or is there an unusually high number of young ones in the truth smoking and doing drugs like ecstasy and dope?.
is it that these people are doing this out of rebellion or simply that they like to live in a fantasy world?.
i've talked to a number who seem to think that they will live a double life for a while, then come back in five years "because they know its the truth".

Its like these people like to fool around as long as there is some "anchor" in their life to come back to. If its the truth, why doesn't it exercise any influence in how they live their life?

Seven- The UserName indirectly is tied in with Sarah McLaughlin's "Path of Thorns (Terms of Endearment)" which is a favourite of mine. (I know, not too many guys openly admit to liking Sarah McLaughlin LOL) I take it you made the connection because she also did a cover of "dear God"?
SS-I meant in referring to the REM song that losing one's religion, or for a Witness, one's religion or his whole way of life or "the dream" to be not true is his biggest nightmare. I believe the song is referring to what you said, yet pricks the minds of Witness listners by reminding them of the emptiness they imagine they would have without their "religion".

it seems i constantly am confronted with those who are trying to make a "christian" out of me.
in various threads on this forum the term is used as if everyone understands what it means and there is no fuzzy edges.. i wonder if all here assume that only those that follow "jesus" are to be considered "christian"?.
consider that the title "christ" was not the name of the nazarene, only a title!
Ok I understand what you are saying now.
You could argue that way on technicalities, but I was speaking of what is generally accepted. Muslims I believe accept Christ as a major prophet but no Muslim will say they are a Christian.
Its an interesting concept though.

I think "Losing My Religion" has a strange place in many young Witness minds. There is quite a large REM following, at least where I live, in the age bracket I am in. For that reason, the song is liked, yet has an uncomfortable place with many.
As for XTC's "Dear God" more take that to be blasphemous (like DM's "blasphemous rumours"). Its always been a favourite, as it conveys the emotion and feelings of the godless in ways few songs do. I'm just thankful that I don't share those feelings.

I've been thinking about this recently since the Society has allowed us to accept all minor blood components.
When the donation arrangement was brought in due to the Jimmy Swaggart case, the letter regarding the new arrangement was read on a Sunday meeting followed by several demonstrations at meetings and assemblies.
The importance of the new understanding regarding blood (particularly us being able to accept hemoglobin) cannot be understated. Yet, this has only recieved mention in a QFR article. Most Witnesses continue to be ignorant of the whole blood fraction issue, and will refuse components simply because they are derived from human blood.
Why the Society will not inform Witnesses of what they can conscientiously accept in this area really bothers me. Contrasting the attention they gave to the donation change with this change which involves lives reveals what is really important to them I guess.
