if you remember, syria was hunting god's prophet, elisha.
@SFPW... can you see how self-righteous you are coming across?
We are all spiritually deficient so you are here to save us all. How arrogant!
your words.... "There's been far too much preaching to the choir going on here and I aim to change that."
You've answered NONE of the mostly very good thought provoking responses, except the two before yours.
How long have you been a JW? Bet you're still wet behind the ears. You come across as very young and inexperienced and very robotic in your words and thoughts.

Contradictory Doctrines
The Jehovah’s Witnesses have a doctrine known as the "increase of light." It is based on Proverbs 4:18, which in their New World Translation of the Bible reads, "But the path of the righteous ones is like the bright light that is getting lighter and lighter until the day is firmly established." Witnesses understand this passage to mean that God reveals to them a progressively greater understanding of the Bible, known as "light." Over the course of time, then, the WTS is becoming more accurate in its interpretation of the Bible and in its prophecies, as the "light" shines more brightly.
While Catholics agree with the idea of doctrinal development, that is not the process actually taking place within the WTS. When a teaching or belief genuinely develops, its essence remains intact as expanded layers of understanding are added to it. In fact, the first president of the WTS, Charles Taze Russell, said: "A new light of truth can never contradict a former truth. ‘New light’ never extinguishes older ‘light,’ but adds to it" (WT, Feb. 1881, 3).
When we examine the history of the WTS teachings, though, we see a very different reality. Many WTS doctrines are contradictory or have been reversed, abandoned, or flip-flopped back and forth between interpretations. As Jehovah’s Witnesses became increasingly aware of this, the WTS had to account for it and so compared its doctrinal changes to a ship tacking in the wind (WT, Dec. 1, 1981, 27). A drawing accompanying the article shows a sailboat zig-zagging toward its destination. The reader is assured that the boat ultimately gets where it is headed. This explanation may satisfy some, but to others it is an attempt to cover up a history of doctrinal confusion.
Here are some examples of the WTS extinguishing one "light" for another:
The Great Pyramid of Giza is "God’s stone witness" detailing his plan for humanity (Studies in the Scriptures, vol. 3, 1890, 313) and later a "monument of demonism" (WT, Nov. 15, 1955, 697).
Jesus should be worshiped (WT, Jul. 15, 1898, 216); then he should receive only "relative worship" (WT, Jan. 15, 1992, 23); then relative worship is forbidden (Make Sure of All Things, 1965 edition, 249); finally, he should not be worshiped (WT, Nov. 1, 1964, 671).
The sower of the seed in the parable of the mustard seed (Matt. 13:31–32), is Satan (Man’s Salvation Out of World Distress Is at Hand, 1975, 208), and, in the same year, it is Jesus (WT, Oct. 1, 1975, 600).
The men of Sodom and Gomorrah are to be resurrected (The Harp of God, 1921, 344), then not resurrected (WT, Jun. 1, 1952, 338), then resurrected (WT, Aug. 1, 1965, 479), then not resurrected (WT, Jun. 1, 1988, 30–31).
The "higher authorities" of Romans 13:1 are earthly governments (Studies in the Scriptures, vol. 2, 1889, 81), then Jesus and Jehovah (WT, Jun. 1, 1929, 165), then the commercial and political elements of Satan’s organization (Preparation, 1933, 127), then Jehovah and Jesus (Salvation, 1939, 58), then human governments once again (WT, Nov. 15, 1962, 686).
The WTS has said: "It is a serious matter to present God and Christ in one way, then find that our understanding of the major teachings and fundamental doctrines of the scriptures were in error, and then after that, to go back to the very doctrines that, by years of study, we have thoroughly determined to be in error. Christians cannot be vacillating—wishy-washy—about such fundamental teachings" (WT, May 15, 1976, 298).
The article went on to ask, "What confidence can one put in the sincerity or judgment of such persons?" This is a point to ponder seriously when assessing the reliability of the Watch Tower Society as a spiritual guide.
just answer this question in an honest and unbiased way, free from any circuitous reasoning or speculation.
if you do so, i swear to my heavenly father, that i will call the elders tonight and turn myself in.
any active jw may answer this question.
DD, I noticed that at the DC... I thought it was very ironic that they were saying it.
If he says it was the truth 100 years ago then it can't be now, as it's changed so much. Even 50 years ago when I was little. What they believe now is not what was believed back then.
If it was true then, it can't be now. If it is true now, then it can't have been then. How can you have a 'present truth'?

@Frazzled, I think it's a good thing really. What about all those doubting JW lurkers? One who are scared to join in but read threads like this? There's an awful lot here to make them think, thanks to everyone's replies.

So, your idea of spirituality is knocking on empty doors and trying to get a bible study. I've been doing it for the last 45 years and only ever had one (when I pioneered as a teen). It's helping construct more buildings for the WBTS. Gaining 'privileges' in the congregation. What's that? Talks, passing around the mic, being an MS, an elder?
My idea of spirituality (as a christian) is having a personal relationship with God AND with his Son. You know.. the one who gets a passing mention at the meetings. The one called Jesus Christ. The one who gets less mention than the organisation does. It's prayer, it's reading God's word every day and knowing it's for me, that God is talking to ME through it's pages. It's being good and kind to others, something that ANYONE can do, not just christians.
You're looking at earthly things, outward things, not inward and upward. Did you read this weeks bible reading? If you did, did you do as my own family did and think it was only written for 144,000? Not written for you, so it doesn't matter, you can just skim over it. (Phil 3:7-11,14,20,21; Col 1:4,26-29; 2:2-4; 3:1-4)
If you consider yourself a true christian you WILL NOT be following men.... you will be following Jesus Christ!
something that used to bother me back when i cared what was written in the bible (nobody's perfect) was the glaring difference between what jesus is supposed to have said in luke 11 -- which of you if your son asks for a fish will give him a serpent, or an egg give him a scorpion.... and numbers 11 where israel cries out for meat (ungratefully or not) and jehovah sends them meat... and promptly kills them before the first munch is munched, for trying to eat what he provided when asked to.. .
to me the sneakiest machination of god here (satan learned from the master i guess) is that the only other time he sent them quail was the night before he sent them manna for the first time... give the people a taste for lovely roast quail sammiches on skybread panini, wait until they run out of sammich filler and then pow!!.
"trap sprung suckers.
I see it as more of a case of the Israelites not really understanding what they were asking for. They wanted meat; they got it.
Quails migrate in huge numbers and because of their body shape they use the wind to help them. Unfortuantely meat doesn't keep in the heat if not prepared properly.
Can you imagine what would happen to meat collected and stored after a few days? Food poisoning I guess.
Was God involved? The bible says so. However, natural phenomenon could easily cause this to happen with the blame being laid at God's feet, so to speak.
i'm asking this because there are a few on this site who do not agree with the wt or gb, but yet still go to meetings.. .
why?.
To keep under the radar, so no one questions me (although I miss quite a few). Family all still in.
the story of why the new bible has a grey cover (silver sword) moved me to ask you all what your favorite jw urban legend is?.
one of my favorite jw urban legends.
a sister is out in service alone.
I heard about the 'Kenyan shooting' one. Apparently it was even seen on the BBC mid-day news. True, not true? Who knows?
The story goes that a mother and her children were there. They were lying on the floor and the children were told to be quiet, unfortuantely she also had a baby that she feared would make a noise. The whole time the baby stayed silent. They heard others being picked off and shot. Towards the end of the report there was someone singing. Supposedly it was recognised as a Kindom song.
i am pretty annoyed to read/hear them saying that they are the true christian religion because they preach, follow the bible bla..bla..bla... let's list down the things in the bible that they don't follow/do.
i'm sure they are plenty.. the fruits of the holy spirit, that's for a start.. .
.
Don't pray to Jesus. He said "anything you ask ME in my name I will give it". John 14:14..... of course the NWT leaves the 'ME' out. (Except in the Interlinear)
