God's Word and Modern Man
by TheLiberator ini have drawn the conclusion that when god speaks, he is using the language and the concepts of the time.
he is not revealing a new scientific understanding when he speaks.
that would be distracting from the point being made.

Why is believing God exists lying to oneself? In the universe there is order, complexity and precise mathematical formulae. That evidence tells me that God exists. -

Who says that faith is pretending to know the answers? It's the opposite. Faith is all about NOT knowing the answers. Science can give us the answers to many things but there are many questions it can't answer. -

Yes, but only after he felt there had to be something more than just science. Science doesn't answer ALL the questions. There were things he felt science couldn't tell him, he explored those areas and came to his own conclusions. You say he came to his conclusions by reading C S lewis, yet you came to your conclusions by reading Dawkins... (and others) -

But indoctrinated by what? He started off as an atheist but came to his conclusions after years of scientific research. -

Challenging JWs at Cult Carts
by cofty inif i have time i always talk to jws when i see a cult cart.. they are in a public forum promoting a harmful ideology therefore they are fair game.
having said that, the individual jws on the trolley are not the enemy so i think it's better to keep it as friendly and non-confrontational as possible.. being realistic no jw is going to admit they are wrong because of something we say to them on the street but don't underestimate the long-term effect of doubts.. so what are your ideas for how to approach them?.
personally i like to use the literature on the cart.

One thing I've noticed that many of the r&f Jws don't always agree with or like and feel disturbed over is the idea of God killing billions of people at Armageddon. They kind of put it to one side as though they'll get into paradise without having to think about the nastiness of it all. When they are made to face it head on they'll use the 'Jehovah sees hearts and he'll decide'. But it doesn't connect with idea that only JWs will survive Armageddon. There's a lot of CD going on with them. Ask them if they believe God is going to kill billions of people and watch them squirm. -

Healing
by compound complex ini feel an unfamiliar restlessness in my lower body.
too long have i been confined to my sickbed; my mind and heart coax me arise and gaze upon the world outside.
it is no longer a matter of fighting long-entrenched despair.

My brother died last night
by LisaRose ini found out this morning that my brother died last night, he was also an ex jw, 73 years old and died of heart disease and kidney failure.
it was not totally unexpected, as he had been in poor health, but it's a blow, especially as i just lost another brother two years ago.
there were six of us, now only four.

The two paths of exJWs
by Simon init's easy to think of exjws as being a single amorphous group but the more i think about it, the more i believe that there are two distinct sub-groups and wonder if you agree.. there are those who believe and those who don't.
i know that seems obvious but let's break it down a bit more.
there are those who don't and never believed and some who are looking for a religion to match their beliefs.. i used to think this split would be between born-ins and converts but of course it's possible for born-ins to be believers although i suspect that many, like with other faiths, do so simply because they have never experienced anything else or made a conscious choice.

I'm not sure what 'path' I'm on really. I'm a born-in who woke up rather late in life and consider myself still a believer. Having said that I also am coming to believe in evolution too, except I'm not an atheist. I guess I have similar beliefs to Francis Collins. I have no desire for any other religion to take the place of the one I've left, I just want to be left in peace to get on with my life, enjoy it, take on board what others believe and weigh up whether it makes sense to me or not. If it doesn't I discard it, if it does I think about it some more. I've taken on board some buddhist (secular) ideas... I very much enjoyed the book 'without buddha I could not be a christian'. There is a certain amount of agnostism in me too, in that there are many questions that just can't be answered. However I take pleasure in the thought that 'it's better to have questions that can't be answered than answers that can't be questioned'. For me that about sums it up.
