This explanation is from JuanViega from AAWA regarding the bogus site.
At that point I messaged the owner of the other site, gave him my phone number and asked him to call me at home. He did and we talked. I requested that he immediately take down our logo and stop referring people to our site without their knowledge or permission. I'm not sure if he hung up on me or we were simply disconnected, but I now had his number on my cell phone. So I called him back. I could tell he was upset with me, but while I was on the phone he removed the crappy image of our logo and put up another image totally unrelated to AAWA - or even his own Facebook page. He agreed to stop sending new members to our site and indicated that he would notify all of his members that they might want to check our site and remove their names. Since then he has changed the status of his page to a more private setting.
While our conversation was a bit tense and not entirely friendly, I tried to make it clear that we did not consider him our enemy and appreciated his trying to help us get a good start, but going ahead on his own without checking with us had created problems for us and had offended and outed many FB users. I tried to explain to him that I considered him a friend, felt we both had similar goals, but there was a right way and a wrong way to assist our growth. He just "went ahead of Jehovah" - oops, I mean "AAWA" - and in doing so had caused us a great deal of embarrassment, grief, and cleanup work.
We've been closely watching our membership levels and so far they have remained steady at around 1325 members. So in spite of the complaints here on JWN about this fiasco, we have not seen any indications of a mass exodus of "offended" members, and any who have left have been immediately replaced by an equivalent number of new members. There has been only a trickle of any emails sent to us or through our website complaining about this situation, and most have been quite understanding about it all. It has only been here on JWN that complaints and accusations have been continuous and harsh toward us about this incident. If anyone still has a problem, email me at [email protected] and I'll see that it is immediately corrected.

I won't be .... for security reasons. I haven't seen any serious regard for the security of it's members by this group.
Fine. But its a learning curve they're on and I'm sure lessons will be learnt. Meanwhile how about the members on this site easing up on the rhetoric and realising the potential of AAWA?
How about everybody stop moaning about an error and start looking beyond to the worthwhile goals and aims of AAWA. And lets face it, if you are a volunteer, you've got a voice and an opportunity to input.
Is that something this site can endorse? Have you or the OP read their mission statement on jwactivists.com ? Is it a goal you can agree with?
They're not gonna get it right everytime, nobody does. But to act as if the whole venture is unworthy of consideration based on a naive mistake in the beginning is a real shame

Entirelypossible
The matter has been corrected now and due apologies have been made. Therefore how about cutting them some slack? You never made a mistake that harmed others, apologised and corrected the mistake? Did you hope to be forgiven? I'm sure you have. I know I have.
Hell? Slight exaggeration don't you think? So lets ease up on the emotive one-liners and keep it real.
Going forward AAWA can do a great deal of long term good to those exiting the WT and to those contemplating joining. I suggest we focus on that rather than the errors made on the learning curve right at the beginning of their work.

oh ok, I get ya, sorry.
But I still don't get the need to have a pop at AAWA like this. Its damaging and negative. The problem with FB has been explained and anyone can choose to join the genuine page if they are able.
If you're not able for security reasons, then don't. I cant see what the opening poster is sulking about. If the OP has questions, then he can use the other contact methods available to him.

.... or have I got that wrong??
Yes you have. To join AAWA you dont have to be part of their facebook page. Im a volunteer and not on their facebook page.
As for the bogus FB page, let me say it again, AAWA WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT!!!
So please stop confusing the two. Either join the AAWA and their genuine FB page if you choose to (no probs if you choose not to )
And by all means condemn the numpty who made a bogus FB page in AAWA's name and compromised security.
But for goodness sake! Stop confusing the two.

Because they started with saying how awesome they were going to be, fell flat on their faces, compromised the security of hundreds of people andw handled the results with nothing short of trainwreck results, admitting incompetence, then presuming complete competence, refusing to answer questions, refusing to take steps to protect those that were compromised, etc.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
EntirelyPossible.
Remember this fact, none of the members or directors of AAWA are professionals, theyre all just concerned, well meaning men and women who want to pool their acquired skills and do some good. Yes a mistake was made but AAWA wasnt to blame for the crass stupidity of others who used their name to do harm. So why doesnt everybody get off their back and start being more positive?
You know what? Im beginning to think that a few members on here are just full of hot air. They like to moan and groan about how terrible the Watchtower Society is and how it has damaged their lives blah blah blah, yet when an opportunity comes along to actually DO something in a practical way, they look for any excuse not to get involved.
ps, how do I stop this bloody text highlighter thingy?
