Someone on JWTalk has shared their convention notes (for those interested in a JW perspective).
- Jehovah’s people will experience hardships, so reliance on God is paramount!
- Prayer is essential and vital for our spiritual well-being. It connects us to Jehovah and strengthens us under the most trying of circumstances, trials and under persecution’s heat. When trials come our way, pray to Jehovah, supplicate and He will provide endurance.
- Isaiah 54:17 emphasizes that “no weapon formed against you will have success.” These “weapons of Satan” - includes lies, threats, humiliation, prison and torture, and execution. STD only wins when we give up, give out and give in! But we can be victorious because Jehovah and Jesus Christ is with us!
- Doubt restricts our courage, hinders our faith and may cause us to lose our life. Faith strengthens courage and helps endure hardships, so we must pray constantly for more faith, meditate on Bible prophecies, study examples of faith, attend congregation meetings and preach God’s Kingdom to others.
- Jesus has set the superlative example of courage and we all benefit from his example. When faithful, we can be courageous “soldiers of Christ."
- Jehovah’s arch enemy is referred to as: (1) an evil murderer (2) father of the lie (3) cunning serpent (4) great dragon (5) god of this system of things. It is important: Do NOT fear STD (or the demons!) We can resist him but only with the help of Jehovah and His holy spirit!
- Pray! Hope in Jehovah and act! (Ps. 27:14)
- Faith + love for Jehovah = courage!
Yes, what an awesome faith-strengthening convention! Here were the peak attendances each day:
- Friday: 5,971
- Saturday: 5,905
- Sunday: 6,091
- Baptized: 28

The Excuses JWs use for the child abuse mishandling issue...
by stuckinarut2 ini have noticed a pattern of regurgitated excuses and justifications used by the average jw if the topic of child abuse gets raised:.
"oh but jehovah's organization is setting the lead in how to handle this issue".
"why are you getting so hung up on this one issue?

"Bob" on JWTalk refers to them as "alleged victims".

The urban legends we heard as JWs!
by stuckinarut2 inhow often have we heard some sort of sensationalist urban legend as jws?.
here is an example i was told as a kid:.
the experience of a sister who knocked on a door and was greeted by a big fierce looking man- intimidating and mean.

I've heard the above story by many JWs. It was always "my mums friend" or "my friend told me that..."
I've also heard the same story from Mormons and born agains.
Remember the story about the gestapo searching a Witnesses home for Watchtower literature and they miraculously couldn't see the bundle of Watchtowers right there on the kitchen table?
Pity Jehovah couldn't hide the JWs... i guess his powers are limited to making paper and ink invisible.

Drop Off in Mentioning 1914
by steve2 invideos from the summer jw conventions ("be courageous) show the "urgency" about the end racheted up several notches.
paranoia rules supreme!.
curiously, though, very few, if any, statements in the convention program about 1914 and the overlapping generations.

I think the newly indoctrinated ones and the latest stock of born in's getting baptized are not fully aware of even concerned about the 1914 teaching. It's like removing the bottom brick from a toppling tower - the tower should come tumbling down... but it doesn't. Because now they say "we're not serving a date".
I was only born in 1984 and i remember as a kid 1914 being the number 1 reason why we have "the truth™". It's all become a farce, and those who've invested 60+ years in it cant bare to face the fact that they've been conned. I can understand that.

Getting Married to a Non-JW
by LaurenM inso i just got engaged to my boyfriend of over a year.
my jw parents still don't know about him.
i'm currently faded, so they know i'm not a practicing jw, but i am baptized.
-
pale.emperor
I would like my parents to come to my wedding though.
I wouldn't hold out for that.
Your parents are not going to accept him, simply because he's "not of our sort". Even if they did attend the wedding they'd likely put a downer on it somehow by not mingling with non JWs and probably leaving early.
If it were me, I'd not even tell them you're getting married and only tell them AFTER the wedding. It's frowned upon to marry outside the faith but they cant actually disfellowship you for it. Just make sure you refuse to answer and questions from elders or any JWs for that matter (family included) regarding your living arrangements and sex life before the wedding. Because we all know they will go there and in the real world its nobodys business but your own.

I agree immigration needs to be highly controlled, but Trump is the extreme other end of the scale. I honestly couldn't think of a less competent individual to be doing the job he's assigned to.
I actually worked as a citizenship caseworker for 12 years and an immigration officer for 5 years so i know first hand what goes on. When it comes to seeking asylum, a person is supposed to claim asylum in the first safe country they arrive in. So if you're fleeing the Taliban, you should be safe in Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan. When an Afghan, for example, claims asylum in the UK, that means they passed through eight or nine safe countries to get here (Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany and The Netherlands). As an immigration officer, i'd ask myself "if i were fleeing danger in Afghanistan, why would i pass through all of those countries to come here? Counties that have a similar culture, language and climate?" The obvious reason is always free healthcare and benefits. Sad to say, but i saw it literally everyday for 17 years in my job. When i granted someone British Citizenship, for example, and i told them over the phone you'd almost always get the same question asked immediately after... "so when can i get a passport?". No sounds of gratitude, elation or joy... simply a passport. Because a passport = easy travel to and from the country you "fled" from and also means to family back home will now have a claim under human rights to come and settle in the UK because it'd be cruel to break up a family.
Other times you'd get African families with like 12 kids. They'd go through the whole process, get citizenship, then the "mother" would suddenly tell you that some of the kids arnt hers. In the UK we dont take citizenship off people. So these kids are now British Citizens, which means their real mother/father can now come over and get a visa because they have ties in the UK (their kids). Doesn't matter if their parents have a criminal record or disease.
My personal opinion (and feel free to pick it apart) as to how to deal with immigration is:
- Each country in Europe should take an equal percentage of asylum seekers.
- As soon as whatever regime they've fled is overthrown, return them to their country.
- Immigrants who apply legally should be prioritized by their educational qualifications (doctors, engineers, tradesmen/women)
- Commit a crime while you're here and you're out.

Are we losing our way a bit at JWN?
by nicolaou infirstly, i want to be crystal clear how grateful i am for jwn.
it's been my place of support for over seventeen years and it's the first online space i direct anyone to if they are taking steps out of the cult.
i am not bashing jwn - i love this place and appreciate the hard work and expense simon puts in to keep it going.

What bothers me more than the topics on politics are the repetitly ignorant alegations of freemason pinkies, Rolex watches, expensive suits and being millionairs the gb.
I agree!! And those "subliminal images" bullshit theories.

Celebrating a birthday for the 1st time
by Whynot inafter almost a year of thinking and eh feeling, not sure... i decided to throw a small birthday party for my son.
this feels so strange, i have never been to a birthday party.
my husband doesn't feel comfortable with it but he decided to play along lol.

pale.emperor
I can relate entirely. I didnt know what to do on my first b.day celebration either. In the end, i made my daughters day simply all about her and made it her day. Cake and presents at a minimum but i found she was happy with that alone. It was just me and her because we didnt know anyone yet.
For her next one, i held a small party of her best friends, kids games, bouncy castle and i made goody bags for the kids to take home - little bags with sweets (candy) and toys.
As for my birthday... i could still take it or leave it. It has no feel. Thanks Watchtower :(
