this thread is inspired by the great thread pale.emperor recently featured here on the forum about the things our overzealous parents banned while we were young.. seth andrews (a former fundamentalist christian broadcaster - now host of 'the thinkingathiest') just released this great talk!

so many things he speaks of will sound familiar!

we were not the only strange religion it seems..... enjoy!.

I dabbled in Satanism for a good while after leaving. It's basically just atheism but with rituals to make a mockery of religion. What i think is funny is that by Watchtower standards my home should be filled to the brim with demons by now. Yet i've had not a single encounter, funny noise, doors opening on their own or anything... nothing, nada, zilch.

From Feb 17-Oct 17 i've done the following things without anything bad happening:

Collected Hindu idols and displayed them in my home
Made a Ouija board and used it
Bought tarot cards and messed around with them

I almost wish something would happen so i would have a reason to believe in the supernatural.

we all know the gb like to impose rules upon the rules... but did anyone else out there have parents that implemented rules upon those rules?

Really got $h@t upon when I accepted a referral from my family doctor to see a specialist to treat severe post-partum depression. "Don't tell the shrink you're a Witness™ or he'll think we're all crazy!" "They'll get you to leave The Truth™!!" and the straw that broke the camel's back: "If you turn your back on The Truth™, your three beautiful children would be better off if you took them out in the back yard and blew their heads off with a gun. That way they won't go down with you at Armageddon™ and will be Resurrected™ in Paradise™."

Scarey stuff, and not an isolated incident either. First off, depression seems to be part and parcel of being a JW these days. And more and more are taking herbal remedies to try and treat it rather than seeing a professional (my mum's cupboard was full or St.John's Wort). And as for this "blowing the kids heads off" thing. I've heard similar things like this before.

My parents fluctuated on this. They'd ban them, then lift the ban when there was a major storyline, then get hooked again then the CO would come and it'd be banned again. I used to like Home & Away. I genuinely believed that there were no ugly people in Australia.

Well wernt we all just weird little kids? Glad i wasn't the only one.

I remember one time my older sister reported my Super Mario game to my parents because in one of the levels there's ghosts. That was the end of that game.

hiya, firstly i’m new to this website, so sorry if this topic has been covered before.

i have been out of “the truth” for almost one year.

i live with my non-witness mother, have an amazing boyfriend, work and am in college.

I signed up to an art class that was held on Sunday evenings. Met lots of likeminded people there. Also, take a look on meetup.com and join groups there that have the same hobbies/interests as you. The majority of my friends came from there.

Do you (or did you) have much of a social life as a Jehovahs Witness.

i ask this question out of interest, because as a jehovahs witness for some 26 years, i have always felt that there is an 'all work, no play' culture within the organisation.

the organisation doesn't promote social gatherings.

i could count on one hand each year how many get togethers we have had.

My social life was a pathetic one when i was a JW. I remember being 29yo and looking and evaluating my life. I had no friends. The only people i hung around with was my wifes brother and his wife. There were things going on like get togethers every now and then but i usually wasnt invited to these. Wasnt really sure why. It sucked when you'd hear about "a brilliant party" that all the ones my age in my cong had been to. And made me think, they must have deliberately not invited me because everyone else my age was there.

I had no friends yet im a very outgoing, engaging person. Now that im out i have lots of friends from varied backgrounds and i love them all. And the amount of dates i've had surprises even me.

Yes, i truly am living the #bestlifeever

We all know the GB like to impose rules upon the rules... but did anyone else out there have parents that implemented rules upon those rules? Mine did. My mum tended to copy whatever the elders wives were doing and took it to the extreme. Therefore, i missed the following things from my childhood:

Ghostbusters - because it'll bring demons into your home

Rock music - because, apparently, one kid listened to a Marilyn Manson song and killed himself. Nothing was said of this persons mental state before listening to Marilyn Manson and the fact the millions of his fans haven't killed themselves. Not to mention the people who've killed themselves or others after reading the bible.

Michael Jackson - because he did the Thriller video

The X Files - because they investigate the paranormal? Or so i was told.

Grange Hill - (a childrens TV series here in the UK in the 80s/90s) because my mum said the kids were "cheeky"

Playing outside - because it'll "encourage gangs"

Playing out after school with my schoolfriends - because they dont worship Jehovah

Playing Goldeneye on N64 - because it's the same as murder (???)

"Violent" computer games - same as above

Star Wars - because it has the word "wars" in the title. I've still never seen Star Wars.

After school clubs - because i'll be mixing with non JW kids (like i do every day anyway?)

The internet - because it's full of "information". Seriously, that was their reason.

Watching WWF/WWE wresting - because it's violent

Reading any other religious book - because it'll bring demons into the house (how convenient)

The Beatles music - but only from the years 1966-1968 (?!?!)

The following bands were definately banned - Guns n Roses, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, KISS, Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Marilyn Manson, Black Sabbath

Elton John was a grey area... my mum liked his music. My dad said "i would like his music if he wasn't gay"... (the hell does that even mean). It didn't help when i was 6 and the CO was at our house for dinner and asked what i wanted to be when i was older and i said "i want to be Elton John".

Higher Education

just spent 8 hours in a 1 day elders school last weekend.

clarification given: "moving forward any elder, ms, or pioneer who themselves or someone under their roof enrolls in higher education, may no longer qualify for privileges in the congregation.

their qualifications will have to be reviewed by their boe.".

I seem to remember the JW lawyers in the Royal Comission acting confused when it was claimed JWs are against higher education. "We're not against higher education your honor".

Your sexuality and feelings are absolutely normal. Christianity has it's roots in Judaism, which started as a desert tribe made up of men dominating women... how coincidental that their God just so happens to be ok with men marrying many women, invading other lands and forcibly taking their women, and death to anyone that would jeopardize that.

Your beliefs are also yours alone, and not to dictated to you and monitored by any organization. Please read up on JWFacts.com and learn the many things this religion has taught and tried to cover up. You'll be glad you did.

Don't you find it strange that the God of the bible would be ok with slavery, rape, genocide, infanticide, and testing imperfect humans but he's so bothered about who we fall in love with or who we have sex with? Humans that he created for no other purpose than to worship him?

I look forward to your future posts. Nobody on here will ever reject you for who you care for.
