Great talk. I can't believe no one said anything - the audience was pretty quiet.

I don't like "taking the lead"
by I Want to Believe insome men probably got off on the power/ego trip being a male jw gets you, but i never cared for it.
i'm an introvert, and was an especially awkward one at that haveing been reaised in social isolation, so it was about the strangest feeling in the world when as a newly-baptized teenager (back in the day) i started to pioneer.
i was about as green as you could get in every way but i was told i had to take the lead in the service meetings and the car group.

I always loved being told what to do in FS by a 13 year old boy. It made me feel so secure that a "man" was taking the lead. Also loved that you could be practically illiterate and have the worst time management skills yet still be a book study conductor, elder or ms because you had a penis.

LOVE-BOMBING TRAINING just before the Memorial
by Alfred inthe last memorial i attended was in 2010 and i havent been to the kh since june of 2010... but when i was in, it seemed like every year, usually 1 or 2 weeks before the memorial, the service meeting would have a skit on how to behave when new faces enter the kingdom hall on memorial night.. it was always extremely painful for me to watch (and sometimes humorous) because the elder in charge of that service meeting part would usually select 4 of the grumpiest elderly sisters in the congo to do the skit.
one pair of sisters would play the part of the "love-bombing" jws and the other pair would play the interested ones entering the kh for the first time.
then they would switch roles and change up the script a little.. i always thought to myself: those sisters are never going to put that into practice... theyll show up late before even thinking of love-bombing anyone.

We were told to be on our best behavior, car pool so there would be ample parking and dress appropriately so as not to stumble new ones. And we were also told not to socialize too much after the Memorial because the second congregation ( we shared a hall) needed to arrive and prepare for their Memorial.

You have never heard of anyone have a bad day in field service, Right!
by life is to short ini grew up hearing that over and over.
i used to think about those bumper stickers that say i would rather be golfing or fishing.
jw's should have bumper stickers that say i would rather be going door to door.. once i got old enough to understand it, i used to beat myself up all the time because some of the most hellish days of my life have been out in service.. for so many reasons even more then i will list!.

The worst days in FS for me happened to be when an elder in my cong wanted women to go out in service with him so we could babysit his young children. He never took them to the door, the bathroom or even sat in the back with them. If I wanted to take car of a baby I would have had my own.

I just got off of the phone with my mother. She is baptized although inactive for the past three years. She was at the grocery store today and ran into a "brother" and a "sister" separately. They both made a point to look at her and then look quickly away as if she wasn't there. She called me to say that these two should know better, one having been df'd before for drinking and the other for shielding his daughter when she was "gross sinning" before she got df'd. She said it seems as though they are treating her as already df'd so why bother going back. I told her that the Jesus they preach about wouldn't have treated her that way and if they really gave a damn about her "salvation" they would have at least greeted her and "encouraged" her to come back. In the end she seemed happy that she got treated that way. The more she reads on this forum and the more she sees how she is treated makes her pretty confident in not going back. Her user name is phroggygreen, if you see her post please welcome her. She started reading after I suggested this forum to her.

One - my ex-husband. I thought it would improve my marriage. The joke was on me. Thankfully no one else ever took me seriously as a JW.

Which came first for you? Watchtower illegitimacy, or a compelling alternative?

I just wanted out of my disastrous marriage. If I had not DA'ed myself my ex-husband would still be "married" to me and try to control me through the brothers. The compelling alternative is having meaningful friendships based on mutual repsect and love, celebrating holidays with my family and trying to make the world a better place by being a better person.

Why Can JWs Eat Turkey On Thanksgiving & Still Say They Aren't Celebrating?
by minimus ini don't get it.. the idea is that it's ok to eat food on any day as everyday is a day of thanksgiving.
it was the only holiday that i knew witnesses to celebrate.. .
-
mercedes_29
In my old congregation the "friends" were reminded that having parties and dinners on worldly holiday days was giving a bad witness so no one went out or did anything to avoid getting in trouble.

Do Most Witnesses Truly Believe In Their Religion?
by minimus ini wonder how many witnesses actually believe their religion.
what do you think?.
-
mercedes_29
Most of them would never admit to not believing for fear of being marked. I always had a hard time beleiveing that only Witnesses would survive Armageddon and everyone else would die - children of non-Witnesses, babies, adults with mental illness and simply good people in general who happened to be of another religion. I also never believed that the Witnesses knew when Armageddon would come. The Bible states pretty clearly at Matthew 24:36 that no earthly person will know when it is going to happen - the GB is full of beans if they think they can figure it out.
