I never heard about the magnet (magnite?)before, maybe I could get by without my faith, but I went down that road for ten years, without belief in God, and it has been a long journey back. I have seen too many coincidences in my life now that science would have no explanation for, little things that have caused me to believe. So I keep plugging away with my studies. Praise the Lord. I am a Christian and love God.

Sometimes I do feel like it is a waste of time. In fact a JW once questioned my motives about this line of research instead of answering my questions. I do believe Almighty God is still communicating today. In prayer before the Blessed Sacrament I often have quiet moments when I really feel I am being comforted. I also have had very clear feelings come over me after receiving Communion when I am in silent prayer, once directing me to consult my priest. There have also been modern day messages communicated through Mary, such as at Fatima and the present day she is appearing to visionaries in Medjugorje. I also am aware of the messages given to Saint Faustina, from our Lord, which are available to us in The Diary of Saint Faustina. I continue to research many aspects of my faith and although it may seem to bring me to many dead ends, I certainly have a better understanding of the Bible because of my studies. Unfortunately the Old Testament was tweaked in the NWT. One scripture that is very controversial is Ex.3:14, translating "I shall prove to be" instead of "I AM", Researching John 8:58 deeply affected my perception of Christ and was a critical time in my conversion, as I did not accept Jesus Divinity. I am still disappointed that the translation I grew up thinking was superior to all others, is so corrupted by doctrinal bias. Comparing the Peshitta with the NWT use of Jehovah in the NT has revealed some obvious bias. Who gave the Watchtower the power to change scripture, not just interpret it badly but actually mess with the very words written. All because they came up with a theory that a great apostasy occurred before the Bible was even compiled. There is no documentation, no proof for any of it. They structure their whole belief system around a theory. I just didn't read the fine print. Sigh.

Thanks so much for all the information Wonder of You, I really appreciate it. I will begin to check on the locations of the use of God's Name in the Peshitta vs. the NWT. But also am really curious about the idea that the Aramaic text may have come first. Scholars can usually determine which is a translation from another language based on sentence structures, and sometimes awkwardness of the wording of the copy, I look forward to researching this further with the links you provided. In the Peshitta has special treatment been given Divine Names, as in the Greek, with the contracting and underlining of the shortened form?( Nomina Sacra) I wonder if JW's realize the NWT uses Hebrew translations of the Greek text that were translated for Jewish people by Trinitarians? The insertion of YHWH into the text was to show Jesus is YHWH. Ironic isn't it?

The early church never taught only 144000 would go to heaven. Estimates have at least 250,000 Jews in the early church, and then counting thousands of gentiles. If the teaching is true, how could there be any openings left by the 1880's? I wonder why it is so difficult to consider Jesus speaking of the other sheep as the gentiles who would be preached to and join his flock. He also spoke of going to prepare a place, and refers to many abodes in his Father's house. Scripture clearly shows the Christians looked forward to heaven. You should check out "Approaching Jehovah's Witnesses in Love" by Wilbur Lingle. He has many good questions on this subject to pose to a JW.

the apocryphal books are accepted by catholics in their douay version as inspired of god, but rejected by the rest of christianity?.

when you examine the reasons for and against acceptance of the apocrypha as divinely inspired or not, it dawns on you that the traditionally accepted 39 books of the hebrew scriptures are nothing but the same sort of stuff as the more recent apocryphal books are, with the only difference being that the 39 much older ot books contain a lot more scary stories, fables and mythology invented by the ancient jewish priesthood to frighten their followers into fear and obedience and continued giving of meat sacrifices for the priests to eat.. ultimately, the ot can be summarised as nothing but a mixture of relatively accurate historical jewish war histories and genealogies, such as the aprocrypha is, mingled with scary stories made up by the ancient jewish priests and scribes..

I have found several other references to a council of Hippo, I am not sure what the difference is between a synod and a council. I think both terms are made up of a council of bishops. I am a little confused, but I guess the point is that already by 393 a list of accepted books was drafted which later became the canon as we know it today. Thanks for your insightful comments.
