That Russell did a lot of shopping around before he found doctrines to his liking is a down to earth story that I dont recall we ever were told. The JWs would rather imply that at the appropiate time, God raised this mighty student of the Word, "knowledge shall increase" Daniel 12:4, only to be surpassed by the modern JW.org.

Well to me the most fascinating about second chance / first real chance theology is how he and later Herbert Armstrong could teach this as a fact to his followers without explicit scriptural basis. The other basic doctrines of Russellism after all have some verses here and there that supports or appears to support them.

Vienne,
It surely is an interesting story. Also that Russell could sell this idea to fairly many people that were bible fundamentalists to some extent. I would expect to see such a vital doctrine in the Bible and critics of Russell would to this day ask; where is this in the Bible?

Vienne,
I asked on this forum where did Russell get his second chance / one real chance theology? It seems there was a small movement that argued that it would be unfair if God did not let everybody have a real chance learning and working out their salvation under perfect conditions. At the same time a strong emphasis that the few bad boys that would resist this grace, would be out of luck. The universalist movement was much bigger and produced much more books. I remember getting a link to a second chance book, but I cant remember the title now. I remember Russell in his first volume several times connects Acts 3:23 and 2 Thess 1:8-9 as "evidence" for this doctrine. The problem is of course that nothing teaches this in the Bible. I find the view in which we are currently under the new heavens and earth gospel age with Revelation 21-22 showing the aftermath of the spiritual victory of Christ and the second death (a concept John got from Egyptian mythology) being included in the death of 1 Cor 15:26 much more convincing.

Watchtower Disparages the Bible
by Vanderhoven7 ini'm looking for wts quotations that contrast with ii timothy 3:15-16 whereby they downplay scripture.. here is one from way back..
"...people cannot see the divine plan in studying the bible by itself...if he then lays them [scripture studies] aside and ignores them and goes to the bible alone, though he has understood his bible for ten years, our experience shows that within two years he goes into darkness.
on the other hand, if he had merely read the scripture studies with their references, and had not read a page of the bible, as such, he would be in the light at the end of the two years, because he would have the light of the scriptures," (watchtower, sept. 15, 1910, p. 298).

slimboyfat,
I think they are wrong because Proverbs 8:22-31 is personifying wisdom. In 1 Corinthians 1:24, Paul personifies Jesus as God's wisdom and power. How far will you take the literalism? God the Father has no power and wisdom? Jesus is not a being / person but attributes? It is personifications. Same in John 1, the Word or words (divine/prophetic) of God are personified in the Jesus and made flesh which means a human being

Ever Apostate,
I know for us snake lovers this divine myth is a bit disappointing. But snakes are also put in a positive light like in Numbers 21:4-9, John 3:1-21

One of the first things I noticed after leaving JW and years after beginning to believe in God, is that the JWs dont read Scripture in context. The read their study books and their study books select verses from the Bible. A classic example is Proverbs 8:22-31. The strange face they put up if you succeed in making them look at the context of Proverbs 8 .

It is hardly any news that Russell got his doctrine from a handful of preachers in the Adventists family. View of the soul. Some Adventists were Arian.

Science News article: ‘Case closed’: 99.9% of scientists agree climate emergency caused by humans
by Disillusioned JW ina news article has the headline of " ‘case closed’: 99.9% of scientists agree climate emergency caused by humans"; see https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/oct/19/case-closed-999-of-scientists-agree-climate-emergency-caused-by-humans .
the article says in part the following.. 'the scientific consensus that humans are altering the climate has passed 99.9%, according to research that strengthens the case for global action at the cop26 summit in glasgow.. the degree of scientific certainty about the impact of greenhouse gases is now similar to the level of agreement on evolution and plate tectonics, the authors say, based on a survey of nearly 90,000 climate-related studies.
this means there is practically no doubt among experts that burning fossil fuels, such as oil, gas, coal, peat and trees, is heating the planet and causing more extreme weather.. a previous survey in 2013 showed 97% of studies published between 1991 and 2012 supported the idea that human activities are altering earth’s climate.. this has been updated and expanded by the study by cornell university that shows the tiny minority of sceptical voices has diminished to almost nothing as evidence mounts of the link between fossil-fuel burning and climate disruption.. the latest survey of peer-reviewed literature published from 2012 to november 2020 was conducted in two stages.

Left wing climate racket and snare. we just need more nuclear power that is the way to go. Also support to the third world should primarily be given in the form of condoms
