Friends
by StinkyPantz inthe dictionary defines a friend as a person whom one knows, likes, and trusts.
this definition seems fair enough, but at what point do you really know someone, and how much trust is needed?
i think everyones ideas of what a friend should be like are broad.

Sheesh you two, get a room
Getting back onto the topic......
Apart from the qualities that Stinky mentioned, I consider someone a friend if they accept and love me for me, just as I'm prepared to accept and love them for them. It doesn't mean I'd condone anything that was seriously amiss (habitual liar, backstabber etc) but I would want them to be themselves, and I'd be comfortable being myself when I'm around them.
Yes, friends help each other out when one of them is need, even if it's not going to mean being repaid. They know that if the shoe was on the other foot, that a helping hand would be there for them too.

Disappointed a little .... How many of your family still stuck in the borg?
by run dont walk inmy brother had called a few months ago, and said he and his family will be travelling through on their way to the usa, i have now found out that they are passing me by, and just continuing on to their destination.. i haven't seen him or my nephews in 10 years, actually this was the first time i talked to him in 5 years and was quite surprised they were even considering coming by.
a brief history on me, i left the borg at 20, and i ran, moved 2000 miles to get away from family.
they really believed (i think) that i was going to fall flat on my face and come crawling back asking for forgiveness, dream on.

RDW,
I can relate to your experience. My father started to shun me 15 yrs ago (non-JW reasons but he has been a JW for the past 50yrs). At one stage, I hadn't seen him for 10 years. I'd find out he and his wife would pass through the towns my sister and I live in, yet not contact either of us. The only contact we had were on his terms. We would only contact each other when it was absolutely necessary, usually for family business. When I left the Dubs I told him and I was subjected to a "last days" spiel, but since then I haven't heard from him.
My sister is still a staunch JW too, and our relationship has been affected by my leaving the Dubs. We can't talk about anything to do with Biblical matters (particularly JW stuff) otherwise we end up in a fight. So now we stick to everything else but, and we get on ok now.
I have some JW relatives but I've lost contact with them now. And my non-JW relatives I never really got to know as I was growing up, so I've never really known them.
And the rest of my family/relatives (including my mother) are all dead. It sucks being the youngest of your branch of your family tree.

How about something in our profile that can indicate our status (single/married/divorced/gay etc) ?
Then if we see a poster that we like the sound of, we can tell immediately if they're available, rather than have to embarrass ourselves by posting them a PM along the lines of "I like you - are you single?" LOL

As a witness did you secretly celebrate holidays?
by Dimples inwhen i was a witness i knew of many who would either celebrate certain holidays in secret or make up for them some other way.
such as, family day ( christmas ) costume parties ( halloween ), i even knew several who made it a point to go see the fireworks on the 4th of july.
my mother told a wife of an elder that she always felt weird on mother's day for not sending a card to her mom, because her mom expected one.

We could sing "winter" songs, like "Frosty The Snowman." But if it mentioned Christ or Christmas, we were s*it outta luck.
"Winter" songs were out for me too, because Christmas here in Australia is during our summer, so ALL of those seasonal songs were out of bounds for me.
Were any of you forbidden to eat Birthday cake at school?
Oh yeah, actually I can't remember birthdays being celebrated in primary school (same as American elementary) either because the teachers didn't make it a class thing, or because I was sent out of the room when they did. I was invited to some birthday parties but I had to explain to my friends that I didn't celebrate birthdays. I'd feel bad when other friends would give them presents but I couldn't. Some would give me pressies or cards on my birthday, even though they knew I didn't celebrate them.
Recently through the "schoolfriends" web site I found an old friend, who was one of those that gave me birthday and Xmas pressies. I thanked her for being such a good friend and apologised for never giving her anything. She was really sweet about it, and said not to worry about it. The main thing is that we're friends again now.

7. Bottom shelf of wardrobe.
which contained about 50 mags. I never through them out until earlier this year, when I moved house. Now I only have ones for reference (such as doctrinal changes).
