I notice the scripture John 6:68 "Lord, whom shall we go away to?" is also twisted in various ways by the Watchtower to say "Where could we turn if we would leave God's organization"

Common JW phrases that aren't in the Bible
by biometrics ini'm interested to know common phrases jehovah's witnesses use, but don't actually apear in the bible (even the nwt).
especially phrases most jw's would assume are in the bible.
e.g.. "paradise earth".

I Was Offered A Bible Study By The Elders
by minimus in2 elders, the cobe and his sidekick, a former bethelite and a young ms (elder in waiting) stopped by my mom's home while i was visiting with her.
they were very congenial and eventually asked me if i got invited to the memorial and whether they could arrange a future visit with me and a possible study.
i thanked them and told them i appreciated their invitation but that i was going to "pass at this time" but thanked them for their concern.. they recited a "wonderful experience" about a young man that was raised in the "truth" but wanted out so he decided to go to asia where he could not be found by witnesses.

Was it EX JW literature / WT's or the BIBLE which woke you up? Post scriptures if any....
by EndofMysteries ini considered myself immune to ex jw stuff.
no amount of old watchtowers or anything would change me.
it was seeing treatment of others by elders and the bible itself, which woke me.

It was scripture, and Jehovah's Witnesses inability to answer questions. Here's a few that got me started:
1 Peter 3:18-20
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive,[a] he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits- 20 to those who were disobedient long agowhen God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,
1 Peter 4:5-6
5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
Luke 16:19-31
22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

Now that we plan for Retirement
by designs inone of the big adjustments for many of us was growing older and realizing retirement was a reality.
did you have a company or government retirement package or personal ira or 401k.
what advice would you give the 20 to 60 year olds coming to term with 'life in this system'..

Thanks for the observation. However I'm not in the USA so most of what you've said probably doesn't apply regarding penion plans. Where I live I have what's called a self managed super fund. This is a type of trust legislated by Government, and allows me to invest in almost asset classes (even property).
Beyond that I'm not about to get into a "Who's dick is bigger" argument in this thread (or anywhere). Nor am I about to provide anything more than anecdotal evidence to a complete stranger on the internet.
If you'd like to know my exact investment positions, or genuinely want investment advice you can PM me.

Based purely on my investment results so far, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about.

As a JW child, were you physically punished for non-performance?
by biometrics ini knew a few jw children who were beaten by their parents for various non-performance issues e.g.
not remembering scriptures, not giving talks .... did this happen to you?.

Kingdom Hall remodel - scam
by Dagney ini was wondering from any here in the know, does it seem like there is a lot of "remodels" going on?.
in the last week i had the occasion to talk with two jw's in different halls, about 10 miles apart.
they both are undergoing major remodels.

Ahh the fights that I remember about KH remodelling. I remember one elder (who was against remodelling) started yelling in the meeting. There was a vote put to the congregation whether or not the hall needed remodelling (hall was 5 years old). First vote was the for, nearly everyone put their hands up, next the against. There were only a few hands, everyone looking at the elder who was against it. That was enought to set him off. I can't remember what he said, but he stormed out of the KH yelling and pointing.
Then there was another KH I was at. One elder acused everyone of having too much money, and not contributing to the remodel. He used the example of cars in the parking lot, saying most people had expensive cars, yet didn't contribute to the remodel.

My mum got an insurance payout when dad died (I was 5). I later learned that one of the elders convinced her that loaning it to build the local kingdom hall would be a good idea. So mum gave them an interest free loan of around 100K (in the early 1980s). At that time you could have purchased two nice houses. Or one really nice waterfront house, and a new car.
As a child, I used to think that elder was just a great bloke. He invited our whole family over to his house quite often. He used to make us mow his lawns, and do yard work, which I didn't mind too much. He also included us in his family activities. After the hall was built, we had very little to do with him. The hall was his pet project.
It took over 20 years to pay the principal back.
Needless to say, mum doesn't really have any money, and lives on the pension (but is still a devout JW).
