I am definitely NOT dating anyone with kids again - not unless they are grown up and live in Australia. Its way too much responsibility! However the bookshop idea appeals.

yesterday (sunday) we went to our daughters church for family service as they have these at the end of each term for the kids club (sunday school) and if you don't know about my beliefs that i don't have any and i am one not wanting to have anything to do with any religion.. anyway there are a few things that caught my attention during this service as i normally tune out but they were talking about how jesus was telling a parragul (sp?
) about sowing the seeds and then it all came flooding back of the memories about how the jw used this, and you know it was strange as this church was saying things almost identical to what the jw would say.. this is not what i was wanting to mention but i thought this was interesting.. so after all the service they have a morning tea for everyone afterward and i got talking to the minister/father/pastor (don't know what the head person called) wife and the subject come about christmas and i told her that this was not as important as when jesus died and that he wasn't even born on 25th december she was taken back that he was not born on this day as i told her he was born earlier in the year and i explained how this is the reason, she was gob smacked!.
i thought this was common knowledge so i wonder if she will go back to her husband and ask questions if this is true.. so i ask the question is it common knowledge that jesus was not born on this day and it is a pagan holiday or is it a jw thing.
Most JWs have no idea at all how the "Church Year" works.
They think that the church hasn't sussed out that the anniversay of Jesus' death couldn't always fall on a Friday
They totally fail to realise that that these sort of structures and frameworks are out of CHOICE not IGNORANCE.
It's just a different way of observing.
So they feel that the "Recommended Memorial Bible Readings" that they have for memorial week are some exclusive fab idea they've had! But they are totally ignorant of the mass of "Lent courses" and "Study programmes" available culminating in reflections on Good Friday and celebrations on Easter Sunday.
Far more importance and significance is given to Jesus death and ressurection in "Christendom" than in any Kingdom hall.
I've said this before, but Christianity completely wiped out pagan significance of dates by hijacking them and giving Jesus the attention.
Who do you think would be most annoyed. God for the honor given on previously "pagan dates" or Satan, the one supposedly behind those pagan festivals who just lost all his publicity?

in one of his talks, our 'special' speaker, who is also a do, said: 'baptisms this service year have already exceeded baptisms for the whole of last year, and that's before the conventions!
' obviously this can't be verified until the figures are released next year, and it wasn't clear whether he meant worldwide or just britain, but either way it's concerning, and i would guess that the 'bible teach' book has been very effective.
Its true they've had a 500% increase in Britain.
From 2 baptisms every 3 assemblies, to 10 baptisms every 3 assemblies.

for instance, i know for a fact that some contractors have arrangements to be paid.
It's all totally back handed. When our assembly hall was being built in the late 80s they proposed a particular carpet and gave the price. One elder who was in the trade said "Hey that's way overpriced. I can get you that at a very good price maybe even trade." He was told very clearly that the carpet was coming from an already agreed source and they weren't interested in his price. Later we had a small refurb (really a redecorate) in our KH. The cong was small (50 publishers) (doesn't that sound awful now - not friends or members but publishers!) and didn't have much money. The building committee wanted to come. The charge for their consultation was more than our budget for the redecorating. I was actually proud of our local elders because they told them to take a running jump!! On quick builds there were always paid people - usually bigwigs. How come the elder who was an archetect and loaded couldn't donate his time and draw up some plans for a hall but the rest of us did? And I'll name names. Chris Scholes, Penistone Cong (pronounced penny stone not penis tone! although this guy was a head shaking knob)

she thrust sticks down their throats when they misbehaved and made them eat dog food.. one daughter was forced to use a wheelchair for four years even though she was perfectly able to walk.. doctors, teachers and neighbours raised constant concerns about spry's treatment of the children but nothing was ever done by social services.. the catalogue of abuse only came to light when one of the children went to the jehovah's witness elders at the church the family attended.. spry, from tewkesbury, was found guilty of 26 charges of cruelty after a three week trial at bristol crown court.

i remember in the 70's (when we used to be able to have lots of jw social get-togethers like picnics and parties) some of the friends would bring pot-luck specialties that were to die for!.
everyone has a dish they consider their "specialty" which gets high praise and generally requests for the recipe.

we all know it's not an issue if people say the lord's prayer or not, but except for the fact that jw's make it an issue.

Bit of a generalisation there. Repetion equals insincere?? I'll remember that the next time my wife and kids tell me they love me. Hey they've told me ONCE so they must just be patronising me now
When you thank a friend, collegue, family member who does somethign for you on a regular basis do you say the exact same thing each time? Of course not.
Er . . . pretty much yes. How many different ways can you think of saying thank you without repetition? But that means it's insincere just because you've said it before?
Of course some people may be cold and token as you say.
But can you honestly say that it is TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE to use the Lord's Prayer repeatedly in a meaningful way over a prolonged amount of time?
i remember one windy summer day, after a meeting on sunday morning, i walked out of the hall behind a sister who was part of the church congregation with her two teenage children.
her husband did not attend.
the wind caught her dress unexpectedly and blew it up a'la marilyn monroe and revealed that she was wearing (shock, horror) french knickers...... there were a few murmers behind me which i at the time put down to things like "oh poor girl, so embarrassing".
