so i convinced my presiding overseer father that we should have a day where we exchange gifts like in the spring or something.

Stumped and Bambuzled my Sister
by Beans inthe other night i was talking with my sister on the phone and i asked her if she had ever questioned her faith?
my heart was pumping as i wasn't sure what her reaction would be, but she was so open and spoke freely with me and even as i brought up topics about the jw's as she is one she kept listening.
i'm sure it helped that i was only using watchtower quotes as she really could not dispute as it is what the slave has provided.. interestingly as a baptized jw she still didn't seem confident that jehovah would let her into the "magic kingdom" and she mentioned that she would only hope he would let her in.

Well, last night I was out with Beans, Kismet, and DGM celebrating my and Bean's birthday. Um..... WHY????? What possible motive could there be for you? You've seen EVERY OTHER preidction fail. It always results in pain and embarrassment, never pleasure. If your answer is because "I've been seduced by prophecy, and think I know the answer/future" doesn't that whole "no one knows the day/hour" thing make it clear that, by definition, your prediction HAS TO BE WRONG, no matter what, since NO ONE (even you) knows the day/hour?
Frankly, I hope I am wrong because you only have one chance in the prophecy business. If you hit it wrong you're out of the business - you become an unreliable source.

I agree that these quotes are old and out-of-date.
However, I would be interested to learn -- and keen to included at the Quotes website -- if there has been any official retraction/reversal of this policy. If there has not been, then technically this attitude remains "on the books".
Also, as stated at the Quotes FAQ, the site is a compilation of interesting and/or significan WT quotes, not a place to (necessarily) find current JW beliefs. I feel the quote is significant because (A) it was published in the name of "Jehovah's Channel of communication to mankind" and sold as "spiritual truth" and (B) I know of JWs who still believe that "spare the rod and spoil the child" gives them licence to use the belt, or worse, on their kids.
Either way, the quote is provided without editorial or commentary, so as always, I invite you to draw your own conclusions!
