i was thinking the other night (my head is still hurtingcould you imagine having the power to stop it and choosing not to?
i kept thinking, if i could die so that no other innocent person should have to suffer, then i would.
most people would, i think.
Here is an analogy even a Jehovah's Witness can understand.
SOJ, consider this.
As a parent, if you had a child (of young age) who was with you in the kitchen while you were preparing a meal, and the stove was hot, and they went to reach for the stove and were about to burn their hand. You sternly warn them not to touch the stove because they will burn their hand... yet they do so anyway and burn themselves.
Do you punish your grandchildren or great-grandchildren because of what your child did?
Allegedly according to Christian Bible doctrine, Adam ate from the Tree of Life after being warned not to by God. Did God punish just he and his wife.. the perpetrators of the crime? No. He instead declares a death sentence to all humanity, and punishes BILLIONS of people, generation after generation, because of the actions of two.
According to all Christian doctrine, everyone alive after that period never had the choice. All suffer because of Adam's mistake? Yet as an excuse you say that this is temporary so as to garner a better reward later? Who are you kidding? Some loving God you got there. Jesus allegedly claim to atone Adam's sins. So thousands of years of suffering and death are so that an Almighty God can prove a point?
Be realistic.
Wake up and stop following a fairy tale.

some of us left simply because we didn't believe it any more.. some us couldn't stand the hypocrisy.. some of us left so's to have more sex.
some of us saw another light shining brighter.. some of us wanted more material possessions.. some of us needed more control over others than the borg would allow.. what do you think?.
Nothing weird about it SP.
Just wanted to let you know who it was and who you found to be "sexy."

There is also the little matter of god not just permiting wickedness, but in the case of this mother, instigating it. The woman heard god tell her to kill her children. Of course, I think she is insane, and wish she would have chosen sanity when she started hearing voices, but even so, why would god allow this to happen with his name attached to it?I'd wager that far more people have commited evil acts because god told them to, than have done so because satan spoke to them. Wonder why that is?
I agree Six. More atrocities have been committed throughout mankind's history in the name of God than for any other purpose.
The Holy Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the Palestinian intifadeh, the Muslim jihad, World Wars where chaplains on both sides preach to the armies informing them that the same Christian God is on their side...
The Jehovah's Witnesses manipulating doctrine to instruct people that God wants them to shun family members and avoid blood (even if it means children die), or lie using "theocratic warfare" to protect the image of the organization even if it means molesters of children are able to get away with such behavior...
The list goes on and on.

StinkyPantz-
I hate to burst your bubble, but Englishman's picture on his profile is that of British Prime Minister Tony Blair. I didn't know if you were aware of that or not, but apparently you find the United Kingdom's most powerful politician to be sexy. LOL

Everyone has their own reason for leaving the Jehovah's Witness cult, depending on their unique, individual circumstance. Often it is a combination of factors that drives a person to make their exit.
However, given the reasons Englishman provided, I would say these apply most to me.
Some of us left simply because we didn't believe it any more.
Some us couldn't stand the hypocrisy.
to which I would add one more reason that sums it up for me.
Some of us could no longer willfully live a lie, despite the consequences of standing up for a principle.
feeling particularly synical this eve.............here are mine, no particular order or context, what are yours?.
"at least we are good people".
"tut goat" .
A few posts after mine brought back some other memories also.
When I was young, my grandfather actually bragged about telling my sister (12 years my senior) that when she was a child (about age 3) she would never make it to high school. She is now age 35.
Then when my brother was born (in 1973) he prophesied in line with WT teachings that he would never make it past being a toddler. He is age 30 with 2 children of his own.
When I was born he said that I would never see grade school. I graduated from college 3 years ago.
Dubs love false prophecying don't they?
now, the war is over, the weapons were not used and of course have not been found.. how threatening could they be if they did not even use them when being invaded by a massive force (of the countries they hate)?!
perhaps, as many suspect, they didn't use them because they didn't have them?.
now we're being told that we'll have to be patient and give them time to find them.
Hey Jayson-
To compare my comments to that of a Jehovah's Witness is an unfair analogy. If I were attempting to manipulate you I would state that you can only read documents provided by specifically sanctioned parties. (i.e. Dubs can only read WT literature, NEVER antiJW documents)
Instead, I am encouraging you to educate yourself and view the issues from both sides. How can you make a comparison to Jehovah's Witnesses? That instead is a desperate jab below the belt.
It should also be noted that you made a reference to me as cute because I am acting as Simon's lap dog. If you had been around this site longer than two weeks, you would know that in the past Simon and I have had some heated disagreements. I don't kiss up to anybody, I instead stand up for principles and what I believe to be right. When you get your facts straight, then comment. Otherwise you make yourself look foolish unintentionally, because you have not been around here long enough.
dubla-
I apologize if I wrongly insinuated you were somehow a member of a "pro-Bush" camp. I did not attempt to bait-and-switch the topic either. What I stated was extremely relevant to this discussion. I was pointing out the corrupt history of the man who has single-handedly perpetrated this war because he is the Chief Executive of the United States and ultimately has the final say.If he is capable of corruptive practices as seen in his past, and has a motive for going after Saddam Hussein, is it not possible, even likely that this has to do with much more than WoMD?
It is indisputable fact that the United States government went before the world and stated unequivocally that the Iraqis were manufacturing and possess WoMD.
To date, after conquering the country and having free roam over the entire landscape, they have found NOTHING.
The justification for this war was that it was a preemptive strike to prevent Hussein from attacking America and it's allies.
It would most certainly be egg on the face if this war was waged and a country was attacked (resulting in Iraqi civilian deaths, including children) under a false pretense.
Is it not suspicious that the most advanced intelligence agencies in the world provide satellite evidence showing suspected weapons factories etc.?Yet now a month + into occupation of the entire country... nothing has been found? In fact, everything suspected and tested for weapons has turned out to be menial discoveries?
I again apologize if I wrongfully lumped you into a category. This is a passionate topic for me because I feel it is a frightening prospect that our nation (the most powerful and influential in the world) is bullying the rest of the world simply because it can. Even if their reasons given are false ones. Soldiers are out on the field dying for us. I respect that. But is it not practical to make sure that they are dying for the right reason?
.
hey i saw these little guyz and the reminded me of you minimus!

Reminds me of Where's Waldo.

i was thinking the other night (my head is still hurtingcould you imagine having the power to stop it and choosing not to?

This is a topic that has been discussed and debated quite often on religious forums. The best part about this question is the simple logic behind it that even a child should be able to understand.
Christian fundamentalists tend to shy away from discussing this, because when one makes such a rational statement, it makes their explanations or excuses look rather desperate and foolish.
If God is all-powerful and created the universe.. why does he not act to prevent suffering? To prove a point? Children are murdered, raped, beaten, and tortured everyday... yet a deity who is aware of it and capable of intervening chooses to sit by idly and do nothing while his creation is mutilated? If God is not capable of acting, then he is not all-powerful, if he can act but chooses not to, he is malevolent.
An imperfect man possesses more compassion than that. Lowly humans make sacrifices so as to prevent suffering or aid other people when possible, yet an Almighty God who is supposed to be the very example we are emulating does nothing? Sure, religious fundies like to attribute things to God, but that is only when it is convenient for them. God blesses them for good things in life (even though people not worshipping the same God can get the same so-called blessings or fortune) yet Satan or imperfection are responsible for all shortcomings.
How people remain loyal to organized religion and believe these fairy tales are beyond me. To quote Jesse Ventura, Governor of Minnesota:
"Religion is for the weak-minded."
