The Way It Should Be...
by Frenchy inperhaps most people would believe in god if it were not for the idolatry promoted by religions.
religions paint a picture of god with their doctrines.
they are, in effect, creating an image of him.

Excellent points, Frenchy. Do I think that we could all get together and still have this type of give-and-take, and sharing of ideas? Yes, I DO feel that way.
All of us have been in the "mold" so to speak, and it's doubtful that any of us wants to go back into that type of situation.
As we grow in maturity, I think it becomes less necessary to fit a proscribed pattern in order to share our spirituality. The exchange of ideas and learning becomes more important than the ritual.

Most disgusting thing from Watchtower Corp.
by spectromize inone thing that really doesn't add up with the organization and their registrating to be a corp.(yes i have to put this in quote sorry it's called non-profit corp.) is the very fact that they play in the worldly system of things while they tell you to keep out of it.
(while they see nothing wrong in themselves playing the stock market with other peoples money) think about it where did jesus say to register god's organization as a corporation?.
furthermore if you were living in jesus' period of time who would be the president-vice-president-secratary- treasurer-shareholders...?.

Circare, I can't remember the exact articles. A lot was said about the Catholic Church in the Babylon the Great book, where Christendom is pictured as the Great Harlot riding on the Beast.
This was mainly from the 50's and 60's, and I haven't kept all of the bound volumes from that time.
You are correct in saying that a lot of the money goes back into the preaching work, but a lot doesn't. I think that the actual costs for printing the literature are listed either on Simon's JWTRUTH site or on Freeminds.org. The costs for the literature are minimal (something like .004 per magazine). What is the normal "donation" these days? I don't really know, but it's WAY more than the cost.
Then when you realize the amount of money that is put into real estate (Patterson, for example), and businesses, and first-class accommodations for Governing Body members when they travel (rather than being the humble Christians we are led to believe they are, who "should" probably stay with congregation members who would be thrilled to have such association).
Again, this wouldn't bother me so much....after all, religion is a big money maker....except that the WTBTS set themselves up as being "above" such things. Probably this tactic has been toned down in recent years....now that they are admittedly a super-wealthy religious organization like all the others.

Circare,
From my position now, I can look at the WTBTS and applaud their business acumen. For that matter, I can see that the Catholic Church and other churches have also done well in their business dealings.
The point that rankles me, however, is that the WTBTS ALWAYS criticized other religions for operating in a businesslike manner. The diatribes against the Catholic Church in particular were scathing. There were ALWAYS articles about the Catholic Church and its business dealings and how this PROVED that they were not from God.
The WTS held itself up as an example of true Christianity....using all money to further the preaching work. Everyone is a volunteer, noone gets paid, EVERY CENT is used to further the preaching work. Finding out that this rhetoric was all lies is the thing that bothers me. They do EXACTLY the things that they condemn in others.

Circare, I DID grow up in the "truth", and for the longest time I felt as you do....that the organization, its leaders and its members should only be expected to behave as imperfect humans.
However, the hypocrisy continually ate at me. The WTBTS would constantly hold up any imperfect actions of other religions to ridicule and censure...stating how these "human imperfections" were evidence that these religions were not of God, but rather in league with Satan. Meanwhile, they would speak out of both sides of their mouths.....on the one hand telling us to dismiss wrongdoing of those in power as simply being evidence of human imperfection; and on the other hand touting their guidance by Holy Spirit which made them so much better and on a higher plane than the religions of Christendom.
Perhaps that attitude has moderated somewhat. I have noticed that the WTBTS is going more mainstream all the time. However, when I was growing up in the 60's, the "holier-than-thou" attitude was very prevalent.

100 foreskins for your daughter
by Zep inthought dating and marriage was tough in the year 2000...well just check out what david had to go through.. david wants to marry michal, sauls daughter.so whats he have to do?.
samuel 18:25-28. at that saul said: "this is what you men will say to david, "the king has delight, not in marriage money, but in a hundred foreskins of the philistines".
so david rose and struck down among the philistines two hundred men, and came bringing their foreskins and giving them in full number to the king to form a marriage alliance with the king.. lol

Probably should post this on Humor, but, oh well, you're the one who brought it up. (hehehe)
There once was an obstetrician who saved all the foreskins from the baby boys he circumcised. After a long career, he took his (now rather massive) collection of foreskins to a craftsman reknowned for his leatherwork.
He handed over the foreskins and asked the man to create something out of them that he could keep for the rest of his life as a useful memento from his years in practice.
The doctor came to pick up the creation a couple of weeks later, only to be handed a wallet.
"A wallet?" exclaimed the doctor. "Forty years worth of foreskins.....thousands of them....and all you could make out of them was a WALLET?"
"Hey, don't worry" said the craftsman. "All you have to do is rub it and it turns into a suitcase."
