In Defense of Mental Masturbation
by logansrun inevery now and then i see a negative reference to an idea or conversation as "just a bunch of mental masturbation.
" the "spirituality" of quantum phyics, solutions to theodicy, theoretical ways human consciousness might survive death -- all these interesting topics just brushed off by the more empirically minded as fondling our cereberal phallus.
i've been accused of being a mental masturbator (along with just a plain-ol' masturbator) so i think i speak from experience.

Why does God need to be worshiped?
by Scully injust curious about this question today and wondered if anyone else has pondered this.. is worship meant to be a reverent show of appreciation for life that god imparts to individuals?
if that's the case, and someone - by the mere accident of their birth - has a truly crappy life, why should these people worship god or show him "appreciation" for their unfortunate circumstances?
why should anyone who endures hardships worship god, particularly if they have been worshiping god and then all of a sudden a heap of trouble just plops into their lives, unannounced and unwelcome??.

I don't believe in God myself (Because it's Sunday, ask me on Wednesday)
but either way, the demand for worship seems a bit selfish if you ask me.
Although I guess I've heard that before "Our God is a selfish God"

In defense of Bill Bowen and Silent Lambs
by Junction-Guy inafter reading some of the comments against silent lambs, i thought i would respond back with my own topic.
anyway, i have met bill bowen in person at the silent lambs summit in nashville back in march.
i did not feel that he was arrogant in anyway or egotistical.he seemed to conduct that summit in a very professional way and really put together a good program.

As an abuse survivor myself, my time spent with bowen amounted to more than a few hours of therapy. I'm a pretty forgiving guy though and I wish BB and SL all the best.
And as HS puts it (In one of the best posts I've seen here):

About 10 years ago, in a congregation out in AZ that I was somewhat attending, the PO married two non-jws. The cong. rented a hall for them, threw them a big party, etc.
Anyway, as it turns out, they were both already married in California and had federal warrants out for their arrest!

I believe the Catholic Church was formed from the desciples of Christ. They are the earliest Christian Church and found it's beginnings with Christ. How direct it is, I don't know. But if anyone can make a claim even somewhat close to that, it could only be the Catholics.
