restoring my plaster walls - any suggestions?

when i first bought my home, i had planned on putting drywall over the lathe and plaster walls that exist now.. after thinking it over, i decided to restore the plaster to keep the home original.

that and the fact that the cherry molding would have to be removed on the first floor and i really don't want to do that.. anyway, i have been scraping the paint and paper off the walls and the plaster is actually in really good shape aside from a few areas.. the worst thing is that in a few spots the plaster is not attached to the lathe any longer.

the plaster is ok, but you can push it in and out from the lathe.. does anyone have any ideas on how i can fix that problem without ripping the plaster off?.

I tried a few different things and I've finally had success.

No matter what I tried, the screws would sink through the plaster. I got to thinking about how sheetrock works. It's plaster incased in paper. So wherever I knew I had to put screws, I actually ran a span of joint tape & compound. As it dried, I sunk the screws in by hand with a screw driver and it worked perfectly!

The house is coming along great, but now we're considering selling this summer.

" he wrote to russell begging for a copy of the emphatic diaglott since he couldn't afford it.

in the june issue russell replies: "the colored minister who desired a diaglott has been supplied.

Elder "Screw Up" Stories

I don't know how good this one is, but my mom mentioned to me the other day that her elders told her that my DF'ing was most likely 'illegal' (whatever that means). I was baptized in a cong. that was not mine, so that I could be best man in the PO's daughter's wedding. I wasn't even attending meetings, nor field service, nor did I live in their territory. Then a couple of years later I was DF'd by a cong. I never attended, and I was not living in their territory. The two witnesses they used, I had never seen before in my entire life. But the real problem, I guess, is that the cong. my parents are in still hold my file to this day. According to them, a person can't be DF'd if the DF'ing cong. doesn't hold the publisher cards. I don't know what all that means, but it sure seems weird to me. If it was an illegal DF'ing and I knew that I could fight it and win a reinstatement, I'd do it. I'd also like to note:

If it's true that there is a God and if it's true that Jesus existed, and if it's true that he was the messiah, then it could be said that his following was a cult.

He expected certain things from his disciples, things we'd point out as 'mind controlling'.

But it's still a cult and its members proselytise to gain more ~~captives~~ members.

I'd disagree.

I don't see any cult-like activity in the mormon church, and I attended for quite some time and studied with the missionaries (off and on) for quite a few years (more than a decade).

Christopher Reeves Dies...

i was just watching some television show and they were advertising a movie directed by christopher reeves about a young girl that was paralyzed, and overcame many obstacles.

i thought that was just awesome that he had directed a movie.

then i got a mail on cnn breaking news that he had died... how very very awful.... <sob>`superman' star christopher reeve dies .

the problem with mating plaster with drywall is that it's very very hard to match the surface's drywall is so smooth and plaster always has a bit of texture too it
there are some surface treatments that you can trowel over the entire wall to give it a singular surface it's called... sand surface, or trowel on or some such thing you can actually mix paint in with it and then you don't have to paint it when your done...

Ya, that had actually concerned me. The two walls I did drywall are at a corner (both ends), so it wasn't a big deal. But now that I've gotten down to the plaster, I noticed it's not smooth. I was doing some testing last night and watered down the joint compound and smoothed over a section to see if I could do something about that. It seems better today, although now I have to sand it :( Another thing I've found is that there are a few spots that someone did some patchwork, and not very well. It's really hard stuff, and I'm attempting to scrap down the edges, and then fan it out with the joint compound. I hope that works. I don't mind normal inconsistencies in the plaster, as I think it adds charm to the house. I always wanted an older home and I'm thrilled that I'm so far able to keep it original. Although some dumb ass took the slate roof off. Someday I'll put one back on it, as well as on the carriage house. It's really neat. Our carriage house was built to look just like the main home, except scaled down.
