Actually the gospels are the story the apostles realizing Jesus was first the promised messiah from the old testament, the son of god and after his resurrection realizing he was actually the manifestion of god in the flesh.

Who do you think did the apostles of Jesus thought he was (at the end of his ministry ) ? Did they think he was god in the flesh or the arch angel Michael. For me the question is really that simple.
